Chapter 71: Drawing An Array... Surprising The Instructor...
Failure.
Although he had successfully sealed the array, Kranos realized that some of the mana circuits were transmitting insufficient mana. As a result, the array couldn’t fully activate.
"It seems I’ll have to perfect my mana circuits first."
He immediately came up with a solution. With that thought, Kranos began refining the circuits he had drawn. At first, it was extremely difficult—the flaws were nearly invisible. However, using the foundational principles of arrays and formations, he gradually began to understand where the problems lay.
Once he felt confident in his mastery, he took a deep breath to calm his mind, picked up the array pen, and began redrawing the formation on fresh array paper. His fingers moved with precision, tracing elegant arcs on the surface. Having already succeeded once in crafting a defensive array, the process now flowed smoothly.
After completing the array, he infused it with mana. The lines began to glow with a soft brown light, and in an instant, a shield formed before him. Kranos’s eyes lit up. In the blink of an eye, he had manifested a defense shield in his palm.
He waved his hand slightly, testing its movement and flexibility. The shield followed his motion, stable and responsive. Still, Kranos estimated its strength cautiously. He knew his mana lines weren’t yet perfect—they were just barely enough to support the array’s activation.
With a thought, Eternal Hunger appeared in his grasp. He glanced at the shield, and with barely a fraction of his strength, struck it.
Crack...
The shield fractured instantly, web-like cracks spreading across its surface before it shattered entirely. The fragments shimmered for a brief moment before dissolving into an afterglow of brown light.
"It should be between mid-grade and high-grade Rank One," Kranos estimated silently. "But that’s just a guess. Even my casual strike isn’t something a typical Rank One array could endure."
Since the fundamentals were in place, all that remained was to slowly refine his mana circuits until they matched the standard described in the book.
...
Two days passed in the blink of an eye. During that time, Kranos successfully perfected his mana lines. He could now feel mana flowing through them effortlessly.
Having completed his study of the defensive array, he quickly moved on to other Rank One arrays.
A week passed, and by the end of it, he had mastered all of them. It was much easier now—thanks to mastering the defense array first. The mana lines were similar across all Rank One arrays; only the patterns and mana cores varied.
With everything completed, Kranos stood up and recalled that today was the scheduled test where students would present their progress to the instructor.
After gathering his array papers and the necessary tools, he left his dorm.
After walking a short distance, he arrived at a familiar building. Without hesitation, he stepped inside. Seeing that only a few students had arrived, Kranos figured he was early. He took a seat and waited patiently.
Time passed. About thirty minutes later, the instructor finally entered. By then, a few more students had arrived. Glancing around, Kranos noticed that today’s turnout was significantly higher than the previous week.
"I will call you out one by one to demonstrate the array you’ve learned this past week," the female instructor announced, her eyes sweeping across the room. Without wasting time, she began calling students to the front.
The first was a young man seated near the front. Nervousness overtook him. As a result, he failed to condense the array core and mana circuit.
The instructor shook her head.
"As I’ve said before, calming your mind is the first step in drawing an array. Without composure, it’s impossible. Next."
Her words reminded Kranos of something Alphonse had once said during their studies:
"Without distractions, how can one draw an array?"
That explanation implied that true array masters should be able to craft formations even amidst the chaos of battle. The instructor’s statement, however, seemed to contradict that idea.
Still, Kranos didn’t voice his thoughts—he merely took note of the contradiction in silence.
The test continued. One by one, students were evaluated. A few succeeded, though the success rate was low. Eventually, it was Kranos’s turn.
Like the others, he took out his array pen and paper. After channeling his mana into the materials, he began to draw. At first, the instructor maintained a neutral expression, but that soon shifted to surprise—and then to shock.
Within minutes, Kranos had completed a high-grade Rank One array.
She stared at him in disbelief.
"Young man, did you truly begin learning arrays only last week?"
Kranos simply nodded. He activated the array to demonstrate its function, then deactivated it and handed it to her.
"Such fine craftsmanship," she murmured, clearly impressed. Her gaze sparkled with admiration.
"You have remarkable talent for arrays. Don’t waste it."
After delivering her advice, she turned back to the remaining students and continued the test while Kranos quietly returned to his seat.
He didn’t let the compliment affect him. Only he knew the real reason behind his rapid improvement—his deep understanding of the fundamentals and inscriptions.
Besides, as someone with the experience of a former old man, he could naturally spot flaws others might miss and correct them with ease.
Back in his seat, he continued observing the rest of the test. While there were a few other talented individuals, most could only manage low-grade arrays.
When the evaluations concluded, the instructor spoke again:
"Your progress over the past week is commendable. I expect all of you to begin studying Rank Two arrays immediately. In one month, we’ll hold the next assessment. If you encounter any challenges, don’t hesitate to seek my guidance."
With those final words, she brought out her mana device—just like last time.
Kranos and the others proceeded to pay the required points, officially ending the class. As they dispersed, Kranos made his way back toward the dorms.
But just as he turned a corner, he noticed something—several students were quietly trailing behind him.
With a faint shake of his head, he picked up his pace. The group behind him did the same.
Then, in the next instant, Kranos’s figure vanished.
Before the startled group could react, he reappeared behind them, watching with a faint smile.
Their eyes widened, and a chill ran down their spines.
