Chapter 63: Waking up the next morning
The dining room of Elaris Hold glowed softly, its lantern light dancing across the carved figurines and vibrant paintings, the air heavy with the lingering scent of roasted herbs and warm bread.
Alex leaned back in his chair, his stomach full, a satisfied smirk tugging at his lips as he pushed his empty plate away.
Across the table, Griesla stacked dishes with delicate precision, her ruby chain glinting, her gray eyes calm but distant.
Jusin stretched, his broad frame filling the space as he yawned, his mud-streaked tunic creased from the day. "Good grub, as always," he said, patting his belly, his voice a warm rumble.
Alex nodded, his confidence unshaken despite the quiet settling over them, the meal’s chatter fading into the evening’s hush.
With a shared glance, the three rose, the scrape of chairs echoing faintly.
Griesla led the way, her gown whispering as she climbed the stairs, her steps light but purposeful.
Jusin followed, clapping Alex’s shoulder, "Sleep tight, kid", before veering to his room, his boots thudding.
Alex trailed behind, the house’s warmth wrapping him, but as he reached his door, the silence felt heavier, like a cloak too big for his shoulders.
He pushed into his room, the darkness swallowing him as the door clicked shut.
The space was quiet, the cream-colored walls barely visible in the moonlight filtering through the window.
His bed loomed in the corner, pillows neat, the teddy bear from Griesla and Jusin perched awkwardly atop it.
Alex shrugged off his tunic with a weary motion, the fabric catching briefly at his elbows before he yanked it free and tossed it toward the chair in the corner.
The garment landed in a crumpled heap, half-sliding off the armrest, forgotten.
Stripped down to his sweat-damp undershirt, clinging slightly to his skin from the long day’s strain, he exhaled deeply and turned toward the bed.
He lowered himself onto the edge of the mattress with a slow, deliberate motion, every muscle in his body protesting with quiet aches.
The wooden frame groaned beneath his weight, the creak echoing in the stillness of the room
The elven world had been a whirlwind, Inolda’s fire, Jusin’s stories, the strange creatures, but here, in the stillness, a hollow ache crept in.
For the first time since arriving, loneliness pressed against his chest, sharp and unfamiliar.
He thought of his old life, blurry faces, human voices, and the contrast stung.
His smirk faded, eyes tracing the ceiling’s shadows, until exhaustion pulled him under, and he fell into a dreamless sleep.

Morning broke with a soft knock, the door creaking open as Griesla’s voice cut through the haze.
"Alex, time to get up," she called, her singsong gentle but firm. "Get ready for school."
He blinked awake, groggy, the room bathed in pale dawn light.
Griesla stood in the doorway, her gown a soft gray, pointing to a stack of clothes on the desk, tunic, trousers, a cloak, all neatly folded. "Be quick and come downstairs for breakfast," she added, her gray eyes meeting his briefly before she slipped out, leaving a faint floral scent behind.
Alex groaned, rolling out of bed, his body stiff from the night’s chill, muscles protesting as he stretched.
He shuffled to the washroom, the stone floor cold under his feet.
The bath was brisk, the water biting his skin, waking him fully as he scrubbed away the lingering fog of sleep.
His blonde hair dripped as he toweled off, the mirror catching his reflection, lean frame, faint tan, a body he knew turned heads.
He dressed in the new clothes: a fitted green tunic, dark trousers, and a cloak that felt oddly formal.
Standing before the mirror, he tilted his head, taking in the sight.
The elven attire hugged his form, but with his tousled blonde hair, he looked... ridiculous, like a kid playing dress-up.
A grin broke through, his confidence kicking in. "Ladies are losing it over me," he said aloud, chuckling, "so this must work, right?"
He struck a mock pose, winking at his reflection, the loneliness of last night a faint echo now.
He bounded downstairs, the scent of warm porridge and fruit wafting from the dining room.
The table was set for two, Griesla already seated, her hands folded, a bowl of steaming oats before her.
Alex slid into his chair, glancing around. "Where’s Jusin?" he asked, spoon halfway to his mouth, his tone curious but relaxed.
"He’s at the sanctuary," Griesla said, her voice soft but clear, stirring her porridge with a delicate motion. "Tending the animals early."
"Already?" Alex blurted, surprise flashing across his face, his spoon pausing.
He’d expected Jusin’s loud presence, maybe another story. His smirk flickered, but he shrugged, digging into his breakfast, the oats sweet with berries, grounding him in the moment.
Griesla watched him eat, her expression unreadable but kind, the ruby chain glinting as she sipped from a cup.
The silence was comfortable, the clink of spoons and the distant hum of the compound filling the space.
Alex polished off his bowl, leaning back with a satisfied sigh, his confidence radiating as he flashed her a grin. "That tasted so good," he said, wiping his mouth, ready for whatever came next.
As Griesla cleared the plates, she paused, reaching into her gown’s pocket. "Good luck on your first day at school," she said, her voice warm, holding out a small crest.
It was a name tag, polished wood etched with their family name, in elegant script, a pin gleaming on the back. "All the students wear one," she explained, her gray eyes steady. "Pin it on."
Alex took it, his fingers brushing the smooth surface, a spark of pride flaring.
He nodded, his smirk softening into a genuine smile. "Thanks," he said, pinning the crest to his tunic, the weight of it grounding him, a badge of belonging.
Griesla’s lips curved, a rare smile breaking through her quiet reserve, her eyes crinkling as she met his gaze. "You’ll do fine," she said, turning to the kitchen, leaving him with the crest
