Powerless Boy is reborn as Lustful Elf -
Chapter 115: New Quest
Chapter 115: New Quest
Valen’s eyes widened in horror. "Professor, you can’t be serious..."
"I can. And I am." She raised a hand to silence him. "Unless you’d prefer I recommend suspension to the board. I hear they’re particularly strict with legacy students who start duels in public corridors."
That shut him up.
Alex remained stone-faced, giving only the faintest nod of acknowledgment.
"Good," she said, standing. "Now get out of my office. And if I catch either of you pulling something like this again, you’ll be scrubbing wyvern scales in the royal menagerie."
Without another word, they turned and exited, the door clicking softly shut behind them.
Scene Break
That evening, after the day’s drama had subsided and the sun had long since dipped behind the treetops, Alex lay sprawled on his bed, finally finding a moment’s peace. His room was dimly lit by the fading orange hue of the lantern on the windowsill, the light swaying with the soft breeze drifting through the open shutters.
He had just, finally, gotten Grielsa to stop fussing over him. His adoptive mother had been relentless ever since he walked through the door, her eyes scanning him for bruises, her hands hovering like a healer checking for invisible wounds. Only after repeatedly assuring her that he was fine, better than fine, had she reluctantly left him alone.
Now, alone in the soft quiet of his room, Alex rested on his back, one arm folded beneath his head as he stared at the ceiling, thoughts flickering through his mind like passing clouds. The day had been exhausting, mentally more than physically. The attack, the system evolution, confrontation with Valen, the judgmental stares from other students, Professor Sylunne’s punishment, it all churned in his head.
But just as his thoughts began to settle, a soft chime echoed in his ears, followed by the familiar glint of golden light.
His eyes shifted upward, and he saw the translucent interface of the system flash to life above him.
<New Quest Unlocked>
<Locate the Fallen Root, A relic tied to the Last Evolution Collapse.>
Alex sat up instantly, all thoughts of rest forgotten.
"The Fallen Root?" he murmured aloud. "What is that?"
He narrowed his eyes at the quest details, then asked aloud, "Where do I even start?"
In answer, the system blinked again showing him a semi-transparent map unfurled, revealing three large red "X"s marked across different sectors of the elven region. One was relatively close, just on the outskirts of the residential area. The other two were farther out, embedded deep in forested zones and one near a broken plateau.
Alex stared at the closest marker, then at the others.
"Is it one object split in three... or do I need to find which spot hides the real one?" he wondered aloud. "Or maybe each has a fragment..."
There were too many unknowns.
Still, his curiosity was piqued. And if the system had given him the quest, it wasn’t something he could ignore.
He swung his legs off the bed and stood, brushing his tunic down. Without wasting more time, he pulled on a light cloak, laced his boots, and headed for the door.
In the sitting room, he called out, "Just taking a quick stroll!"
"Be back before nightfall!" Grielsa’s voice echoed back from the kitchen. "And don’t go poking around strange places Alex!"
"Okay!" he called over his shoulder.
As he stepped outside into the cool evening air, he spotted Inolda tending to some plants just beside the wooden fence that framed their home. She was humming softly, her fingers working gently through the leaves of a flowering vine.
Alex raised a hand in greeting. "Evening, Inolda."
She looked up and gave him a wink in response.
He walked down the cobblestone path and reached the front gate.
Beyond it, the world was calm, birds chirping in the distance, fireflies just beginning to appear, and the sky slowly deepening into night.
Following the map, he took a narrow side path that curved around the southern edge of the elven district. It led him toward the closest marked spot, which was now visible on the glowing map overlay.
Soon, he arrived at a high metal fence surrounding a large compound. The area seemed abandoned, no lights, no guards, no signs of life.
He stopped before it, arms crossed.
"Should I leap over?" he muttered to himself, scanning the fence’s height. He could easily make the jump, especially with his Gale Air skill. But something about the compound felt... off.
"No... too risky. If there’s a barrier, or worse, an alarm..."
Instead, he turned his gaze upward and spotted a large, sturdy tree growing some distance away. It leaned at an angle just high enough that its upper branches could give him a good vantage point over the compound.
He moved toward it, scaling it swiftly. Elven balance and precision came naturally, and within moments he had reached a solid branch near the top. There, he crouched and scanned the compound with his enhanced vision.
At first, everything appeared peaceful. Empty gardens. A clean path. Neatly trimmed hedges.
But then... the longer he stared, the more the image wavered. Flickered. It was subtle, but there, beneath the illusion, was movement. Distortion.
"It’s cloaked..." he realized. His perception had activated and made him see the illusion masking the true layout."
Without wasting another second, he leapt from the tree, using his Gale Air he saied over the fence and landing silently inside the compound.
The real layout revealed itself immediately: a wide open space dominated by a small, humble-looking building nestled in the back corner. It was unassuming, just a wooden hut with a flat roof and a single, arched door.
In front of the door, curled up like a sleeping cat, was a small brown puppy.
Alex tilted his head.
"A puppy?" he said under his breath.
It looked harmless. Adorably harmless. Its chest rose and fell in slow, peaceful breaths. He stepped forward cautiously, still on alert, but not expecting trouble.
Then, the system chimed again.
<New Side Quest>
<Defeat the Behemoth One-Fanged Dog>
<Reward: 1 Primordial Key>
Alex froze.
"...Behemoth... what now?"
He stared at the sleeping puppy again. It remained still, its tail twitching once in its sleep.
"Is that the behemoth dog?"
