Chapter 112: Waking in the clinic
Alex’s consciousness flickered back like a candle catching a flame, the haze of pain and darkness slowly receding. He blinked, his vision sharpening as he took in his surroundings.
The room was stark white, bathed in the soft glow of enchanted orbs floating near the ceiling, their light casting gentle shadows across rows of neatly made beds.
The faint scent of healing herbs, lavender and moonpetal, hung in the air, mingling with the sterile tang of polished stone.
He was in the academy clinic, no doubt about it. The pristine walls, the soft hum of magical wards, and the cushioned bed beneath him confirmed it.
His body ached, a dull throb pulsing from his stomach where the moonshade-poisoned crystal had struck, but he was alive, somehow.
His gaze drifted, landing on familiar faces. Sylra was still at his side, her blonde hair falling in disheveled strands across her tear-streaked face, her golden eyes glistening with a mix of relief and something fiercer.
Nearby, Velenda stood with her arms crossed, as she shifted her weight, her expression a blend of worry and impatience.
Bastian lounged against a nearby bed, his crimson hair as tousled as ever, a faint smirk playing on his lips despite the tension in the room.
Before he could speak, a cold chime rang in his head, and the system’s interface flared across his vision, its text glowing like embers against a dark sky: CONGRATULATIONS, USER. EVOLUTION COMPLETE: CURSED ASH ELF. A NEW Chapter AWAITS.
The words sent a shiver through him, not from fear but from the weight of what he’d become. The system didn’t pause, flooding his mind with new information, a cascade of notifications detailing his newfound abilities:
• PERCEPTION: DETECTS LOW-LEVEL ILLUSIONS. UPGRADABLE WITH LEVEL PROGRESSION.
• GALE AIR: ALLOWS MID-AIR DASH VIA WIND GUSTS. USABLE THREE TIMES BEFORE COOLDOWN.
• ASHBORNE BLADE: SUMMONS A SWORD OF CURSED ASH, INFUSED WITH DARK MAGIC.
Alex’s mind reeled as he processed the skills. Perception could pierce through illusions, like seeing past a mirage, a game-changer in a world full of deceptive magic. Gale Air sounded like a burst of freedom, letting him ride the wind to dodge or strike. And Ashborne Blade?
The idea of summoning a sword from cursed ash sent a thrill through him, dark and dangerous. He could almost feel the weight of the blade in his hand, its shadowy edge humming with power.
But the system’s warning from before lingered: Your life no longer belongs to you. What did that mean for him now?
He groaned, the sound escaping his lips as he shifted on the bed, the movement sending a fresh wave of soreness through his body.
Sylra gasped, her hands flying to her mouth, her eyes widening with shock. "Alex!" she exclaimed, her voice trembling with relief. Velenda and Bastian snapped to attention, abandoning their spots to crowd around his bed, their faces a mix of concern and curiosity.
Sylra leaned closer, her tear-streaked cheeks catching the light as she wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. But her expression shifted, the relief giving way to something sharper, anger. "Why would you do that?" she demanded, her voice rising, laced with frustration. "Jumping in front of me like that?
That was so reckless, Alex! You could’ve died!" Her hands balled into fists, eyes blazing as she glared at him, her emotions a tangled storm of gratitude and fury.
Alex blinked, caught off guard. His mind spun, a mix of exhaustion and disbelief. She was literally crying for me to wake up two seconds ago, and now she’s chewing me out?
The contradiction almost made him laugh, but the pain in his stomach kept him grounded. He wanted to say something, to explain that he hadn’t thought, just acted, driven by the need to protect her, but his throat was dry, his words stuck.
Before he could respond, Bastian piped up, his smirk widening as he leaned casually against the bedframe.
"Come on, Sylra, give the guy a break. He jumped in to save your life. Pretty heroic, if you ask me." His tone was light, teasing, but there was a flicker of respect in his eyes as he glanced at Alex.
Sylra’s head whipped toward Bastian, her glare fierce enough to make him flinch. "Stay out of this, Bastian," she snapped, her voice cutting like a blade. Bastian raised his hands in mock surrender, taking a step back, his smirk faltering but not disappearing entirely.
Velenda snorted softly, her silver hair swaying as she shook her head, clearly amused by the exchange despite the tension.
Alex took a deep breath, wincing as he pushed himself up to a sitting position, the clinic bed creaking under his weight.
The room spun briefly, but he steadied himself, his hands gripping the edge of the mattress. "Okay, hold up," he said, his voice hoarse but steadying. "What happened? Like, after..."
He trailed off, the memory of the attack flooding back, the masked elves of Eclipse, the purple crystal, the searing pain of the moonshade poison.
Velenda stepped forward, her arms still crossed. "You got stabbed by one of those Eclipse creeps," she said, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Then you passed out, probably from the pain or whatever poison they hit you with. Scared the life out of everyone, by the way."
Alex’s mind flashed to the system’s notifications, the poison overwhelming his body, the agonizing evolution into a Cursed Ash Elf. The memory of the shadowy aura pouring into him, burning through his veins, made him shudder.
He could still feel the echo of that pain, like a phantom ache lingering in his bones. "Yeah, I remember the poison," he said quietly, his hand instinctively brushing the spot on his stomach where the crystal had struck. The wound was bandaged now, hidden beneath his clinic gown, but the memory was raw.
"What about Eclipse?" he asked, his voice sharpening as he looked between his friends. "Where are they? Did they get away?"
Sylra’s expression softened, though her eyes still held a trace of her earlier anger. "The professors showed up just in time," she said, her voice quieter now. "They drove Eclipse off. Those cowards ran as soon as the elders started casting. The academy’s wards are back up, and the attackers are gone, for now."
Bastian nodded, leaning forward, his crimson hair falling into his eyes. "Yeah, it was wild. The professors came in like a storm, throwing spells left and right. Eclipse didn’t stand a chance.
They smashed through the windows to escape, same way they came in." He paused, his smirk returning. "Kinda wish I’d seen more of it, but I was too busy dragging you to safety, hero."
