Chapter 60: Chapter 60: Live Long

Marita had expected a jumpy reaction from Kylian when she had mustered the courage to tell him about the surgery. Since she would’ve to be out of touch with him for at least the next few days, it was a wise choice to give Kylian a small headsup first.

However, there was no way she would disclose the dark truth of the surgery that she was about to opt for. It was one of the grave secrets that was supposed to be hidden from her son forever.

Thus, she forged another lie while smiling sweetly over the call to make sure Kylian wouldn’t panic or get too skeptical about it, "Calm down, sweetie, it is just a small surgery. My stomach had been acting up for a few days so when I checked in with a doctor today, I was told to opt for a microsurgery to get my bowel movements under check. But still, I might have to stay in hospital at least for a few days, so I had to let you know first if you fail to reach my number, Kyle..."

"What? Y-You were having discomfort with your stomach...but why didn’t you tell me anything before I came here!?" As expected, knowing about the slightest inconvenience of his mother was enough to get him antsy. Swirling his orbs, he impatiently grunted, "Wait, I will come back home today. I can’t let you get over the surgery all alone...I will head to the station right now."

"Kyle, stop getting so overly cautious. It’s not that I am dying or anything...it is just a small surgery—"

"Mom, don’t talk about it like that! And how can I stay calm after hearing—"

"Kyle, I know I have been your first priority until now, but now you have enrolled in the Academy to shape your future. So, you have to focus there sincerely, instead of worrying too much for me."

Interrupting his fretful words, Marita’s voice sounded gentle but a bit commanding just as a mother should act firm while advising her child.

Despite bearing all her concerns alone, Marita exhaled a long sigh while trying to console him when Kylian fell silent, "I am not completely alone here, Kyle. Our neighborhood granny Elma will close her food stall and accompany me to the hospital for a few days. If there is any emergency, she will make sure to contact you. So, please rest easy, okay?"

While hearing her gentle consoling mumble, Kylian’s mind was getting riled with anxious thoughts as he couldn’t ease his mind. For a second, he even started regretting his decision to stay in the Academy when Dr. Albert had urged him to quit and go back home. If he had opted for that, perhaps he would have been able to accompany his mother to the hospital, during her surgery.

But Kylian was also well aware, that he wouldn’t be able to cope with the guilt of making all of her sacrifices go to vain after quitting the Academy where she had poured all of her life savings to build his future.

When Marita had initially arrived in the town all alone while pregnant with Kylian, amidst all the cruel people who had caused her suffering, their neighbor Granny Elma was the only one who had treated her with a bit of kindness.

Granny Elma was widowed as an omega when she didn’t even attain adulthood. She was abandoned by her own family and left to die, who labeled her as a curse on them. Facing such a painful side of the world at that age, she fled to Bethel town and restarted her life by opening a small food stall, however, she had turned into an angry, lonely old woman who lacked empathy towards everyone.

But after meeting Marita, who was already labeled as a disgrace by the outsiders for getting pregnant while being an unmarked omega, despite her suffering, watching her bold determination to do everything to provide her son a better life somehow moved her cold heart, as she slowly started to show her affection towards both Marita and Kylian.

Amidst the terrible people in the town, Granny Elma was the only person whom both Kylian and Marita could trust blindly. Thus, hearing about her mention, Kylian felt a bit relieved to have her around and even though he hated to admit it from his heart, right now it was the wise choice to move ahead with his Academy life while hiding his trait.

Holding a brief pause with a heavy heart, Kylian sighed while answering in his concerned voice, "Okay...Mom... Make sure to tell Granny Elma to call me if anything happens, okay? Don’t forget to call me when you feel better..."

"Okay, okay, I understand. Now you should go and spend your birthday with your new friends there instead of chatting with an old coot like me." Marita chuckled tenderly as if she was trying her best to comfort Kylian’s worried heart as she further mentioned, "Also, don’t be too harsh to that boy, okay? Make sure to thank him for taking care of you last night, okay?"

Kylian stood still at her mumble while bearing a bleak gaze towards the drifting sea waves in front of him. A drop of tear rolled down his cheeks when he responded with a sad grin, "Mom, you have to live long for me...you know that, right?"

"O-Of course, I am not going anywhere, Kyle. I won’t die anytime soon until I see you bringing a cute wife for you at home. Take care, sweetie." Marita answered in a playful tone, but somehow Kylian could sense a vivid sadness in her voice.

Before he could ask anything more, Marita disconnected the call first, and as soon as she did, she couldn’t stop herself from bursting into tears.

Inside her small seafood restaurant which was closed for the day, she was seated on a chair with a surgery consent form placed before her on the table.

While trying to put on a jovial act all this time, an extreme surge of guilt hit her inside when Kylian urged her to live long for him. She knew he would be all alone and broken without her, but her miserable situation had bound her to sign the consent form regarding her organ-selling deal.
