Possessed Wolfless: From Rejected to Vengeful Lycans' Queen -
Chapter 122: Gala
Chapter 122: Gala
The moment Renar dropped to his knees, the entire room stiffened in shock. Caelum made a move to step forward, to pull him back up, but Callista held him back with a shake of her head.
Caelum’s own chest burned, tightening with each of Renar’s ragged breaths, as if he were drowning in the same agony. He never imagined someone like Renar, of all people, would look so utterly powerless in front of his own father.
Jarreth spun his chair away from Renar and gazed out the window, a faint smile tugging at his lips.
"That priest... was a fraud. I did everything he told me to, but in the end, my wife still died." He turned back around to face Caelum, his eyes cold. "It worked on my sister, even if only to prolong her life a few minutes after you were born. So no, I don’t think anything that bastard said could ever be proven."
He opened a drawer, pulled out a stack of papers, and tossed them in front of Renar.
"The Moonstone that shines red," he said, half-yelling. "He said the red energy it emitted would trick the curse. That it could mask the baby’s lycan spirit, make it seem human, just for a little while." A scornful smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
Renar picked up the bundle and clutched it tightly in his hands.
"So why did it fail?" he asked, his voice raw.
"That’s why I lost my mind," Jarreth said, his grin stretching wider. "She died anyway. And all the babies did too."
He let out a bitter laugh. "Should I be grateful that woman brought you back alive? Ha... you should’ve just died. That way, you won’t live in misery."
Jarreth turned his chair again, gazing out at the rain with a look and smile that seemed... content. It made Renar sick to his stomach, fury clawing its way up his throat.
He pushed himself to stand, his legs trembling beneath him. Callista stepped in and steadied him.
"Can I find the priest with this?" he asked.
Jarreth chuckled. "After my wife lost her life, he ran. Disappeared. So even if you do find him, there’s no guarantee his words will help you."
"We don’t know that for sure." Renar gave a bitter smile, "Unlike someone, I don’t give up that easily, and go looking for scapegoats, either." His voice dripped with mockery as he turned toward the door.
"Just spend more time with her. That’s the best thing a cursed creature like us can do," Jarreth said behind him.
Renar paused, glancing back, trying to read his father’s mind. But no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t.
All he saw was Jarreth enjoying the view of the rain through the window, his face lit with a happiness Renar had never once received, not even when he begged for it.
"For a father who used to beat his son every time it rained," Renar hissed, "you sure look fucking thrilled with the rain, it disgusts me."
Without turning, still wearing that unsettling smile, Jarreth muttered, "Because every time it rains, I feel my wife come back to me. And you... You don’t deserve this happiness."
Renar’s lips twitched. His fists trembled, the tightness in his chest nearly unbearable. If Callista hadn’t gripped his arm, he might’ve lost control. Without another word, the three of them left that suffocating room behind.
The drizzle soaked the streets as Callista drove tensely. She glanced at Renar beside her, busy scanning the papers his father had handed over.
"You should just rest. Those papers can wait." She reminded him.
"I’m fine."
"Liar." Caelum protested. "Do you know why I wanted to tag along?" he asked, staring blankly out the window.
"Because I predicted it. And I want to understand why you would feel this way. But I can’t! I give up trying to understand. You’re right... my father’s better." Caelum closed his eyes, but a pang of guilt surged within him.
"Ugh... I hate that I can’t hurt you. Sorry, I take that back!" Caelum thumped his fist on his chest, sighing repeatedly.
Caelum hated pain, especially the kind he couldn’t explain, that linked him, Renar, and Zeran in a tangled mess. Maybe he could take Zeran off his worry list, since he never felt pain from that man.
"This Moonstone... it should be easy to create one that shines red now. We have all the advanced technology." Renar ignored Caelum completely, his eyes gleaming with bitter excitement after reading the papers.
Callista shook her head and sighed.
"Do you love her that much?" she asked.
"Yes, of course! I love her. I want her!" Caelum replied eagerly.
"Shut up, Cael! I’m not asking you."
The car fell silent. Renar glanced at Callista. "Love? No. I don’t believe in love. It’s just... compassion."
The car was loud with Callista mocking him with curses and Caelum threatening Renar not to change his mind later.
But Renar, steadying his breath, paid no attention to the chaos inside the car because the word passion kept ringing sinfully in his mind, over and over again.

Lethia rubbed her forehead, eyes shut tight and wincing as she fought the nagging ache on one side of her head. She had the same damn dream again, but this time the man stabbing the woman seemed different.
No matter how hard she tried to recall whether she recognized the faces, it was useless.
She wondered if the dream was connected to Whisney, since the background looked like a forest caught in wildfire.
’Could that be a fragment of her other possessed wolfless? Where the hell did that nosy fox vanish to? I really need to know what to do with the beads. She should’ve taken the beads with her, too, so I wouldn’t be stuck in this mess.’ Lethia grumbled inwardly.
A knock at the door made Lethia turn, and soon Vonda entered with two young women who looked... glamorous?
"Miss, these are the make-up artist and stylist who will help you," Vonda explained.
"Help me?" Lethia frowned, as if she couldn’t quite place what they meant.
"Yes, miss. For the Gala tonight."
Lethia’s jaw dropped, blinking as she mulled over what kind of clown she’d look like at that ’dream-come-true’ Gala Chasey had mentioned.
