Chapter 549: Facing A Champion

Mega Metagross’s Gyro Ball clashed repeatedly with the shell-armored Tapu Bulu, sparks flying as the piercing screeches of their grinding echoed across the land.

The two moves remained locked in a stalemate for over thirty seconds before, with a resounding boom, Mega Metagross and Tapu Bulu were each forced back nearly a hundred meters.

“Meta!”

Mega Metagross stared at Tapu Bulu. This third island guardian was clearly much stronger than the previous two they had encountered.

'But still—not stronger than me.'

The cross-shaped mark on Mega Metagross's forehead erupted with a golden beam as a Hyper Beam tore through the air, sending shockwaves rippling outward.

Though Hyper Beam was fast, at their current distance, Tapu Bulu could still dodge it with its speed.

But it chose to confront it head-on.

Its body transformed into a streak of light—Skull Bash.

Skull Bash collided violently with Hyper Beam. At the moment of impact, the Hyper Beam was actually pushed back by the sheer force of the Skull Bash.

But as Mega Metagross increased its power, it gradually began to push Tapu Bulu back—though it still couldn't completely overwhelm it.

Once again, the two moves reached a deadlock.

At this moment, Julian’s voice echoed in Mega Metagross’s mind:

“Cancel Hyper Beam. Wait for the right moment and use Meteor Mash.”

Without hesitation, Mega Metagross cut off the Hyper Beam. Freed from the opposing force, Tapu Bulu's Skull Bash—now unimpeded—shot forward like a race car with its brakes released, its speed skyrocketing in an instant.

Just as Tapu Bulu was about to crash into Mega Metagross, the latter teleported away, vanishing from its original position and reappearing above Tapu Bulu.

A rainbow-hued Meteor Mash descended with a thunderous sonic boom, its force so immense that the air itself seemed to solidify under the pressure.

BOOM!!!

The deafening impact shook the battlefield as Meteor Mash struck Tapu Bulu squarely on the back. After Mega Evolution, Metagross's ability had changed to Tough Claws, boosting contact moves by 20%.

And a 20% increase was nothing to scoff at.

The air compressed into a tangible force, and the energy enveloping Tapu Bulu's Skull Bash shattered under the might of Meteor Mash.

Like a falling meteor, Tapu Bulu plummeted to the ground, the sheer force of its impact causing the earth to ripple like waves.

The ground around the crash site turned to dust, and the shockwaves radiated outward in concentric rings.

"Earthquake!"

But it wasn’t over yet.

As Mega Metagross descended, its massive claws—like towering pillars—slammed into the earth with devastating force.

The already devastated ground was now completely shattered—there wasn’t a single square meter left intact.

The powerful tremors from Earthquake continued to ripple outward, affecting the terrain within a five-kilometer radius.

Some weaker Pokémon were even knocked unconscious by the sheer force of the seismic waves.

As a large-scale attack capable of reshaping the battlefield, Earthquake was outright banned in public arenas without anti-seismic measures.

It took a full minute for the aftershocks to finally subside.

And during that entire minute, Tapu Bulu, buried underground, did not resurface.

Mega Metagross continuously scanned the ground below with its psychic senses. It didn’t believe Tapu Bulu had been knocked out.

'Found you!'

With the ground shaking once more, Tapu Bulu erupted from beneath, appearing right under Mega Metagross.

With a devastating Megahorn, it launched Mega Metagross into the air. The terrifying force pierced through and even broke past Mega Metagross’s defenses—fragments of its metallic body scattered into the air.

Julian's expression darkened.

According to his Probing Eyes, Tapu Bulu's level had just surged to 89—and in the next second, an overwhelming Champion-tier aura erupted from its body.

This thing had borrowed the power of the island to temporarily ascend to the Champion tier.

Otherwise, even with the raw power of its Megahorn, it shouldn’t have been able to break through Mega Metagross's defenses.

"Cheating bastard…"

Julian reached for the Poké Balls at his waist and released all his main Pokémon in one swift motion.

Since it wasn't going to play fair, then don’t blame him for not playing by the rules either.

Seeing Tapu Bulu’s level finally stabilize at 91, Julian let out a small sigh of relief.

If it had gone up to Level 95, he’d have no choice but to call on Mewtwo.

But at Level 91, if all of his Pokémon fought together, they still had a chance.

Tapu Bulu's Champion-level aura expanded unrestrained—one kilometer, five, twenty, fifty… until it engulfed the entirety of Ula'ula Island, and even beyond.

Every Pokémon and human trainer on the island trembled in fear.

Below the realm of First-class Legendaries, a Champion-level Pokémon was an invincible being.

Julian’s Pokémon understood how formidable this opponent was. Even the usually playful Arcanine now had a serious expression on its dog-like face.

Kartana, however: 'If I cut this thing down… I’ll grow even stronger.'

“Aggron, Lucario—Mega Evolve!”

Julian initiated a triple Mega Evolution.

In a flash of light, Mega Aggron emerged, its level skyrocketing from 70 to 75. Mega Lucario followed suit, also reaching level 75.

Triple Mega Evolution was Julian’s current limit—whether physically or mentally, it was a tremendous strain.

If it weren’t for his psychic abilities having reached the Advanced-level, he wouldn’t have been able to sustain it at all. Double Mega Evolution would’ve been his absolute max.

Julian dismounted from Moltres, freeing the legendary bird to join the battle as a crucial combatant.

Meanwhile, Slowking hovered protectively beside him, using its psychic powers to keep them both suspended a hundred meters in the air.

Aside from his grandfather, this was the first time Julian had directly faced a Champion-level opponent. But this time, the enemy was extremely hostile—one careless move and either he or his Pokémon could suffer serious casualties.

In fact, the safest option would’ve been to summon Mewtwo using the Mewtwo Fragments. Even if only for five minutes, that would’ve been more than enough to utterly crush Tapu Bulu.

But Julian chose not to do that.

Even though the situation was dangerous, it hadn’t reached the point of desperation.

After all, danger was the catalyst for rapid growth.

Three minutes.

Under Triple Mega Evolution, Julian could only hold on for three minutes. If the battle wasn’t over by then, he’d have no choice but to call upon Mewtwo.

Tapu Bulu stared down Julian’s assembled team, its Champion-level aura pressing down on them like an invisible weight.

"Go."

Julian forced out the command through gritted teeth.

Even speaking was a struggle under the strain of three simultaneous Mega Evolutions.
