Chapter 136: Chapter 124 Narrative Cage (14)
Launching the first wave of attacks were over twenty hyaenas, wolves, leopards... These bio-weapon-infected animals were less like wild beasts and more like specialized biological weapons.
Their original sharp fangs and claws were replaced with serrated blades, their hearts swapped out for high-torque miniature engines, providing a continuous supply of power to their bodies.
Hydraulic and linkage structures at their joints significantly increased their strength and jumping capabilities. Mechanical eyes in their sockets could clearly lock onto fast-moving hostile targets even in dim and chaotic environments.
Above their spines, they were also equipped with rotary machine guns or other heavy firepower.
Clatter clatter clatter clatter—
The infected leaped back and forth across the airship’s inner walls, at dizzying speeds, using their claws and teeth to carve open Zeluo soldiers’ power armor, and then swung their tails into the gaps at the armor’s seams.
Blood splattered, screams echoed throughout the airship, injured soldiers instinctively fired blindly, and bullets from gauss rifles flew erratically, puncturing holes in the inner walls.
The first wave of the attack was just an appetizer; looking through the windows, one could see several large infected Winged Dragons with bodies comparable to fighter jets, flying in close formation right next to the transport plane.
Cling clang!
The Winged Dragon infected opened panels on the underbelly, revealing smoothbore cannon barrels firing more steel spikes towards the transport. All the spikes, like delivery tubes, deployed more small infected, further escalating the chaos.
Li Cheng drew his 170 Straight Blade, holding it vertically in front to block stray bullets, calmly observing the interior of the airship, searching for the potential red button of the engine room.
Red button.
Despite being armed with firearms, the bio-weapons didn’t use them, clearly not wanting to dismantle the ship. Some infected held back the human soldiers around them, while others pounced on the sealed lead canisters containing the Superheavy Elements in the armored vehicle.
Superheavy Elements refer to elements with atomic numbers over 104. Generally, the heavier the element, the less stable its atomic nucleus and thus the greater tendency for decay.
However, in certain circumstances, such as a specific arrangement of nucleons in the atomic nucleus or when the number of protons or neutrons just fills a particular shell layer, the element can remain stable. Just like a bookshelf: when not fully loaded with books, it may tilt and fall, but becomes steady once completely filled.
If stable elements are likened to land, and unstable elements to a boundless ocean, then stable Superheavy Elements are like islands amidst the sea, potentially harboring revolutionary scientific discoveries.
On the real Earth, stable Superheavy Elements remain a scientific fantasy and prediction. Yet here, they are a reality and considered an extremely important strategic resource by both warring factions.
Riiip!
The one soldier in the airship wearing a red helmet, of formidable size, casually ripped an Iron Plague beast off a comrade and tore it in two with bare hands.
Then, grasping the gauss rifle, he targeted and fired in rapid succession like a shadowy blur, accurately killing a dozen Iron Plague infected lunging towards the lead canisters with Superheavy Elements, all without damaging the airship.
Such remarkable feats naturally drew the attention of the Iron Plague beasts. A multitude of infected leaped in a chain across the airship walls, pouncing towards the soldier in the red helmet.
He set down the rifle, unhooked a red longsword from his back, slashing, chopping, stabbing, sweeping... With astonishing butchering skills, he carved a path through the majority of the airship.
"Fuck, that knife work is so cool."
Li Cheng silently praised in his heart, then pulled out his Bat Hook Claw Gun and fired it forward. The metal hook claw shot out, pierced through an Iron Plague infected hanging from the top of the airship planning to ambush the red-helmeted soldier, dragged it back, stepped on it with one foot on the ground, and wielded a rusty machete to decapitate it.
Hiss hiss hiss—
From the severed neck of the Iron Plague infected spewed a mixture of copious amounts of blood and black mechanical oil, with a rancid and pungent smell.
The red-helmeted soldier heard the commotion behind him, briefly turned his head, nodded at Li Cheng, and threw himself back into the melee.
The Iron Plague infected weren’t trying to cause maximum human casualties, their goal was to seize those canisters of Superheavy Elements, deliberately not using heavy firepower to avoid breaking apart the transport and causing a Pyrrhic victory by blasting the plane.
The soldiers of Zeluo civilization were aware of this, also refraining from firing at will, instead using the Power Armor’s gauntlets and Fist Blades to engage in brutal close-quarters combat in the skies ten thousand meters above.
"Button... button..."
Gray Rain, searching for the red engine room button, passed through the airship, choosing not to involve himself in the battle between the two sides, only striking when necessary with cold weapons hung on the walls to cut down infected, all the while avoiding getting splashed by their black blood.
Boom!
Another loud noise came from outside the airship, the third engine failing and emitting billowing black smoke, as the entire plane began to shake and lurch violently.
If the fourth engine were also destroyed, then crashing would be the only outcome.
"Hold on tight!"
The soldier in the red helmet shouted, pulled a lever with a warning label inside the airship, and the tail of the transport opened in response.
Gales screeched violently, some unsteady Iron Plague beasts were swept away by the strong winds, vanishing into the misty clouds.
The red helmet unhooked a steel cable for loading and unloading cargo, hooked it to his belt, then picked up a laser sniper rifle, resolved to charge out of the airship, braving the high-altitude strong winds and climbing up along the exterior of the plane.
Finally finding a suitable position, he took aim at a massive Winged Dragon and fired.
The muzzle emitted a beam of high-energy laser, piercing through the Winged Dragon’s tail. Compared to its massive body, it was like poking a small hole in a piece of paper with a needle.
