Chapter 218: Ascent
Chapter 218: Ascent
As the arena was engulfed in scorching heat, an intense battle was about to unfold. Ten furious gladiators emanated waves of energy, while on the opposing side stood Mercy and Dora. With a final glance at the formidable warriors, the boy’s hand scattered shimmering blue particles into the air.
"You’re about to reach something, the problem is you’re only on the edge. You’re still powerless... in magic. I have no problem replacing you with Lilith but... we are so close to greatness, are you going to play fair or should I do some sniper tricks?"
Dora concluded the magic of creation, presenting Mercy with a sleek black tank top. Grasping the garment firmly, Mercy moved ahead.
"Just give me a weapon."
Dora couldn’t help but smile as he extended his hand filled with blue magic particles towards her.
The particles combined with the red vapor in Mercy’s hand.
"I gave you a sample of my power, since you are not a physical fighter, it will be better if you make the weapon that really suits you yourself, of course not a magic wand."
He backed away and headed down the corridor.
"It’s up to you now, I won’t die, but your story might end here, in another country, after all you’ve worked for, as a crybaby."
With that, Dora left the young girl alone to face her fate.
She looked at the palm of her hand, glowing blue with blue particles swirling around, then clenched her fist.
She took a deep breath and finally looked at the 10 gladiators, her eyes beaming with intensity.
The gladiators, frightened by their previous encounter with Dora, flinched and some backed away, however, the further away the boy got, the more confident they felt.
The red mist spread around them, causing their own aura to be released.
The man in the wolf helmet took his two sickles and whispered.
"Only the legs and arms, don’t kill her."
They shrieked and rushed towards the motionless girl.
The distance quickly closed and the warriors were above Mercy, but the girl did not move.
With her eyes closed, the magic of creation in hand, it was as if time stopped around her, and her mind drifted.
"People are born unequal and the weakest link always disappears."
It was the first lesson a little girl who just learned to read heard from her home tutor.
A flash of light crossed the arena, the warrior’s weapons hitting the ground hard, but Mercy stood further behind, creation magic spreading through her arm.
"Hierarchy is not just a concept, it is on the same level as reality."
As long as there is more than one human, the notion of difference will exist, even between twins.
Not all nobles are nobles, and the girl who did not understand the purpose of the many spoons around her plate realized that her friends were not laughing with her, she was the target of their laughter.
The red mist had greatly reduced around the arena, forcing the spectator to gain more lucidity and therefore to understand the anomaly on the ground.
The red particles spread through Mercy’s arms and slowly reached her chest and neck. Her veins shone under her skin which was gradually turning red.
"What are you saying, are you crazy?!"
A vase shattered in a huge mansion, a tall man holding a figure she admired by the collar.
"You idiot, what do you mean, you’re not going to marry her?"
Her brother was strong enough to lift a tree with his bare hands, she knew it, she watched him every day, but here, for the first time, he showed abnormal weakness.
"I will not repeat myself, father, I will not follow your wish and have a child. The line of Holy Knights in this family ends with me."
These were Peter’s last words to their father. That day, the patriarch kicked him out of a house that Peters owned in the first place, but he never objected.
The warriors rushed towards her again, but as they got closer, time seemed to slow down even for them, but this time without any memory.
- It is said that the world gives you the opportunity to think about your choice when you are about to die.
A shockwave passed through the arena.
"What do you really want in your life?"
The girl frowned at this response from Peters after her determined speech.
"Uh? I told you, I’m going to take your title of Holy Knight! Are you listening to me or what?"
"No, I mean, what do you really dream about, for you?"
- I was too blind to understand the meaning of these words.
A wind blew across the ground and the girl passed to the other side of the battlefield. A second later, the blood of two warriors gushed from their chests.
"I wanted to impress you, impress Freya, become her friend... I trained a lot, but Barron always beat me... when we went to the Rift, I wanted to be the superhero who would give a masterclass. .. but Dora did it again... and you slapped me... and you were so nice to him..."
- It wasn’t my dream
"That’s wonderful! If your knight can beat your stupid brother, then our family is saved!"
- I was so happy to see my father congratulate me for the first time, but now I understand why he wasn’t looking at me. It wasn’t my dream either.
"Oh, Lady Mercy, good to see you doing so well, is your knight now strong enough to compete as a Holy Knight?"
- I couldn’t decide on someone else’s power, why was I threatened with that? Why does everything always revolve around someone else?
She turned gracefully and her bare feet touched the other side of the field again, leaving 3 warriors in her path, unaware of their open bellies.
Murmurs rose from the audience, Iris, Morgiana and Lilith looking at her with trembling eyes.
Mercy’s body turned black, as if charred, and her veins continued to glow like magma. With her eyes closed, she raised her head to the sky.
- Was there a time in my life when I really did something I wanted?
Her eyes were closed, but she could see many images, her room, which she had not decorated, her food, which she had never chosen, her outfits, which she had never liked.
One day, she broke a mirror in Saint Nova after being called a parasite by a professor.
"You don’t belong here"
- I never wanted to be one of you.
One day, her father criticized her for not aiming for the Holy Knights after Peters’ death.
"What did I do to have such stupid children?!"
- I never asked to be born.
One day, a boy criticized her for his failures.
"Bad? Is it bad? What’s bad? Stating the obvious is bad? You’re going to join him, right? You’re like everyone else, like Iris, like Freya, like Princess, you don’t. You care about what people do, you only care about power... You always seemed inaccessible, you never showed emotion, but the way you look at him..."
- Why should I act... as you wish? Why are you all playing with me?!
The heat wave spread through her body, the 5 remaining warriors watching in disbelief. Mercy’s body began to self-destruct, disintegrating into fine particles, but a huge sphere of energy was growing in her chest.
The air became unbreathable, the heat became unbearable and soon her arms and legs were gone.
"MERCY!" Iris shouted from her seat, but her voice could not be transmitted.
Mercy floated in an empty ocean, her mind drowned by all the memories present.
- I never had a choice... I couldn’t save my brother... I was humiliated... I was played... People made fun of me...
Her legs and arms were slowly disappearing, her heartbeat seemed nonexistent, she felt intense heat from the inside, but a delicious coolness from the outside.
Death and Life are not two sides of the same coin, they are one and the same thing, and its side changes according to your will.
- Will you choose the peace of death and start over in a better world, or will you embrace hell behind you?
Hell or death? Rather pain or relief, who would ask for that kind of thing? Is that even a question? Her torso began to disappear, as did the pain in her chest.
- This world is not worth living in anyway, better to go.
"Yeah, because I’m me, it’s my thing, I have my power and my limits, and they’re different from you but you also have your own growth... Why are you so obsessed with power?"
The growing void suddenly stopped. In her ocean, Mercy’s mind stopped rushing and an image appeared.
- What?
"I’ll see you in charge then, it’s true that you are more suited than him for this task... And not just because you can be stronger..."
-...Uh? I don’t remember anything like that... I have no choice, I act for others, so why...
"Being a Holy Knight is not a dream, yer idiot, think of something that doesn’ concern me!"
Slowly, the young girl opened her eyes and, for the first time, contemplated an infinity of stars in the sky.
Her lips slightly parted, she whispered.
- People are always...
"I was going to say genius but you are free to see yourself as you are."
- Free? Since when? And that... that wasn’t even a cheer at all, you insulted me there!
"Peters will always be there for you, this arm is Peters, and it will always be there for you"
-.... But... but you are supposed to be this arm... if you are no longer yourself, everything is gone.
"Find who you really are."
"The choice is yours."
The voices echoed in the void, and soon the stars danced in the sky. A tear fell from her left eye.
- I don’t want to go back... it’s too painful.
"Are you going to let them conquer you like that?"
- I don’t want to suffer anymore...
"You are the only proof that you were alive"
- But they no longer exist! I have nothing there!
The space suddenly cracked and fell into millions of pieces. Mercy, sobbing, found herself standing on something.
A light caressed her cheek like a mother’s kiss, coaxing her to open her eyes, and then she saw it.
"You always exist, you are yourself, so live for yourself"
The girl was standing in front of something. God? Universe? Reality? No one could describe what she had seen, no words could describe what she had witnessed, and even her mind would soon forget what they dared to look at, for the one in front of her was probably beyond the living and non-living.
In a void of infinite stars, Mercy would be the first human to achieve something and her mind inconceivably mentioned these words:
"...Under...World."
She stood in a plain of stars and void, and further away, close but infinitely far, was an infinite tree stretching indefinitely into the primeval sky, or rather, its leaves were the stars.
She lowered her head, as if understanding that she was not allowed to see this, but even with her eyes closed she could see. She could understand the world around her and she could see the person standing in front of her.
No words, no voice, only a warm feeling, Mercy bowed her head, in respect. She was no longer Mercy, she was something bigger, and the pain inside her was slowly transforming into something more delicate.
The one in front of her held out an inaccessible hand and, without a word, transmitted a message into the girl’s mind.
