Chapter 212: Land Of The Beasts
The sun set, marking the end of the first day in the forbidden land. Countless individuals journeyed through the Kalaharis, but come morning, only a fraction remained. This was a sorrowful event waiting to be unveiled, just another day in existence.
At night, the menacing red earth took on a radiant blue under the eye of the sky. In the sleeping town, Lilith and Morgiana entered a kind of restaurant. People ate soberly, drank, and for the first time, the zombies showed a little more humanity.
The girls were sitting in the corner, their hands on their table. Around them, people, dizzy with alcohol, became more joyful, laughing and joking together, a real source of information for the girls.
Meanwhile, Dora was sitting on top of a building, observing a colossal figure towering over the others, a formidable Colosseum.
In the distance, the Colosseum was a normal building, perhaps spectacular, but nothing extraordinary, yet for the young boy, the landscape was different.
The arena radiated with extreme pressure, silent waves of red aura being unleashed steadily.
His eyes sharpened, glowing in the dark as his smile widened.
"... found you."
[...ora... Dora... Dora?...] A voice echoed in his head.
"I hear you."
In the rear of the dining establishment, Lilith placed her left hand on her ear as Morgiana moved in closer.
"I...Morgiana and I found something. Wrath will be out tomorrow."
The boy’s smile disappeared, and his eyes stopped shining.
"We’re listening."
The young girl began her speech, heard simultaneously by Iris and Mercy.
"This city is a place without rules... well, to be precise, only one rule: the law of the strongest. The people live miserably and no one can leave because of the giants outside. There are no knights here, but only one person at the top, the Sin Avatar of Wrath, Shaka."
In their position, Iris and Mercy were tense, this time there was no doubt.
"Shaka is the one in control here, that’s probably why the rules are so terrible. But there is something that will interest you, he is also the leader of a people called the gladiators, a type of warriors who fight every day in a coliseum."
[fight? So they can fight under this pressure?]
"Yes, that’s what they said. I don’t know if they are that strong, but they fight easily here. Besides, we only heard of swords, maces, or spears, I’m not even sure they use magic here."
Dora scratched his chin, his mind wandering. Wrath’s pressure prevents them from using their magic, but their physical strength remains unchanged. He lowered his head, only one conclusion possible.
"Wrath could be a physical only type. If the stories about the naval war are true, then I can see him as a berserker."
[Really? But since it’s a Sin, it should be strong on everything!] Iris intervened.
"No, you are being fooled by me and the fossil. Greed is talented in all areas, Gluttony only used magical skills when we fought her. It is not impossible to imagine a Sin with only physical power."
A silence hung in the air before Morgiana’s voice roared.
[You fought her? You fought the Queen?! Dora, are you... Urgh... Um... Okay, okay... Don’t pay attention to me, I’m a little... emotional.]
"You are also very replaceable, pray that the useless one continues to be a dead weight so I’m keeping you as plan C. Now short stack, you told us Wrath would be out tomorrow, what do you mean exactly?"
A vein appeared on Lilith’s forehead but the girl swallowed her rage. In a sassy tone, she recounted the most important information they obtained from their investigation, information that made Iris, Mercy, and Dora freeze.
From their position, everyone, eyes wide, looked at the horizon. Dora put a hand to his left ear, his face tense.
"Are you sure about this?"
[Huh? As sure as I’m a short stack, gladiators fight to the death every day in a competition to win a piece of Wrath’s soul, and since it’s a land without rules, guess the condition to be accepted into the tournament.]
A smile appeared on the boy’s lips, his fist trembling.
"...Everyone, we have a change of plans."
The night passed without any further problems. The group managed to sleep together on top of a building and at dawn they joined Dora in entering the arena.
With the boy in the lead, they passed a few stores selling mainly weapons or armor, but the moment they entered a new neighborhood marked by a change in the coloring of the ground, darker, the world changed around them.
No more sad looks, no more pain in their eyes, the people around them suddenly became taller and more massive. The district itself was more like a gigantic human farm, populated by phenomenal warriors wearing ancient battle gear and a variety of weapons.
Most of them wore helmets hiding every possible detail of their face, but all shared the same physical characteristic: dried blood covering their bodies. The air outside was difficult to breathe, but as soon as they entered the neighborhood, the powerful wall of blood and intestines rotting even on the ground hit the nostrils to the brain.
Dora stared at the road ahead, searching for something, but behind him, the girls were struggling not to throw up.
"My God... why did I come... here?" Morgiana whispered, her eyes trembling.
Mercy, held tightly by Iris, was doing her best not to show any weakness, feeling the stares under the helmets on them. But it wasn’t just an impression and Lilith noticed it. Around them, all the gladiators stopped and looked at them, perhaps out of curiosity, or out of desire. Or maybe a simple desire to destroy people who seemed too clean to be among them.
"Hey, yeah, can’t you walk by yourself?" A rogue voice sounded from the side.
Mercy glared, quickly stopping at the horror in sight.
It was a shop, a completely normal shop in the place, and in the stand, human limbs and organs were gracefully displayed, visibly fresh.
"If these legs don’t work, give them to me! Ah, take good care of them."
As he said, he sharpened two axes with passion. Some gladiators began to laugh, some walking around the corners as if surrounding them. Mercy was trembling all over her body, the three girls surrounding her like a shield, which seemed to trigger the gladiators even more, more and more of them wandering around.
Dora’s eyes slowly turned to the seller.
"Finally a talker."
Step by step, he walked towards him, without any expression visible on his face. The gladiators’ laughter intensified, turning into cheers, then, a step, and the atmosphere changed.
"Ugh!!!" The seller dropped his axes.
All around, the gladiators stopped their noise and turned towards the boy, and in an instant, only these two were visible to the human eye. Dora placed a hand on an exposed brain and held it up in front of the seller.
"Speaking of working body parts, it’s really hard to find someone who knows how to use their mouth, so I think you’ll do just fine."
The seller gritted his teeth, tensing his muscles, but then a huge pressure fell on him.
"Uurgh?!"
He fell with his head on the organs, nose first, and his breathing was blocked by a shiny stomach. Dora placed the brain on the seller’s head and tightened his grip.
"Now, now, I just want to talk, you’re the first to give me attention since I got here, I just want to be your friend..."
"HMMPHHH!!! HMMMMPPPPHH!!!"
"What? The air no longer fills your lungs? Your throat tightens and your chest is burning? My God, how complicated you are... ok, ok, I’m just going to ask you a few questions and if you can answer them, I let you breathe. hm, I’m asking you everything like this, so you will have to remember it and give me all the answers if you fail even one..."
His hand crushed the brain above the salesman’s head, pouring a bath of brain chunks over his hairless head.
Behind, Mercy finally released the contents of her stomach.
Dora grabbed the seller’s head and lifted it slightly, the latter breathing and coughing painfully, and then his head plunged back into the stomach.
"What are the rules of the mad’s Tournament? How can I participate? What do you win? Anything special to know before participating?... What was the breakfast of this girl who vomited?" He said the last part with a laugh then looked up at the seller again.
"You have one minute."
"AAAhhh.... Aah... eh... ugh..... I spoke... wait...."
"54 seconds..." His grip on the crane tightened.
"... Zhere are... no rule.... yeh fight.... yeh kill... yeh won... anyone... join... but yeh need... lots of win... to be winner... Flamma got 12... and got blessed... if he get 20... he won... the mad said... but if the mad like yeh... eh can say yeh win something... and yeh get blessed...eh... anything special is... eh... nothing? Yeh just need to be strongest... or yeh die... Flamma strongest here.... because blessing... oh! eh... yeh can make bet on peep! If yeh bet someone will lose... and he won... yeh lose, then he can decide yer fate... he can force yeh to go... to the savannah... or...use yeh body... get yeh arm... anything he want... bet worse than losing... Z’all."
Dora’s eyes narrowed, his grip loosened, and his gaze slowly turned to the girls.
"You forgot one question."
A cold sweat ran down the man’s bloodied head.
"...M-meat?"
"Hehehe...No."
The head plunged back into the organ bath and the saddle thrashed, but suddenly he realized that his movements were more fluid. He looked up and saw Dora walking towards his comrades, the boy wearing a smile.
"Well... technically she’s digesting something from a human, so maybe I could allow that answer."
Mercy clutched her mouth once more, battling against the turmoil in her stomach with even greater intensity. Iris and Morgiana made an effort to assist her, casting a furious glance at Dora who nonchalantly walked by without pausing for a moment.
"Iris, Morgy, stay on hold for now, Lil Lith, crybaby, you’re coming with me."
