Chapter 170: Overture
Chapter 170: Overture
"Everyone, stand down! Now!" An emissary with a heavy cannon on his shoulders called out to his companions.
Within a ravine left in ruins, an epic battle raged on between an army of centaurs, lizardmen, and orcs, while the battalion of emissaries faced a relentless decrease in their ranks.
"Retreat to the South, we can’t hold them back until reinforcements arrive!"
"Healers, focus on the tank! DPS, protect the healers and fight!"
Striving to the best of their abilities, they meticulously followed the prescribed instructions, using the tanks to create a formidable barrier against the encroaching horde of monsters. The DPS led the charge from behind, expertly dispatching any adversaries that emerged from the skies.
The emotions etched on their faces were a vivid reflection of their immense frustration, fear, and despair, further heightened by the sight of their comrades, both living and deceased, held tightly in their arms.
"... Hey, you, what are you doing?! They said to retreat!"
Amidst the warriors, a formidable fighter stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the tanks. However, while the tanks focused on defending, she fearlessly unleashed a barrage of relentless attacks upon her enemies.
Equipped with a mighty spear, she fearlessly charged forward, pushing the boundaries of the defensive line. Her movements were daring and audacious, as she ventured dangerously close to the enemy lines.
"Morgiana! Stop being an idiot, back off!"
"This is the last line before the city, people are still evacuating, if we move back now, they will be killed!" said the spearwoman, twirling her spear in her hands before delivering a powerful blow to a centaur rushing towards her.
In a swift motion, she cast a quick glance around her, her eyes darting from one side to the other. From both sides, three centaurs and two orcs were charging toward her.
The ground trembled beneath their powerful strides as they rapidly approached, leaving her with little time to react.
"Dragon scale"
With a crimson aura enveloping her body, she executed a mighty leap, soaring several meters above the ground. In her grasp, she held the spear, its tip aimed downwards.
"AAAAAAH!!!!!"
With a fiery roar, she threw the spear directly beneath her, the projectile blowing away the earth and sending the monsters away.
She landed directly in the crater she had created, retrieved her spear, and looked around.
"Above!" A voice from afar shouted.
She pointed the spear at the sky, which darkened as a flock of griffins approached, hovering above them like vultures.
"Shit..." she muttered, a bead of sweat melting with the blood on her delicate face.
But at that moment, out of the smoke, the horns of a giant black ram emerged and approached her back.
The woman only realized that she was in a life-threatening situation, but was unable to react in time.
"Moon Slash!"
With the swiftness of lightning, a radiant projectile pierced through the defensive line, leaving a trail of awe in its wake. In an instant, a multitude of slashes, adorned in shades of black, blue, and white, resembling a crescent moon, tore through the ram. The beast’s cry was abruptly silenced as its throat split open, disintegrating into fragments.
Among the shattered remnants, one sharp piece of horn landed gracefully on Morgiana’s formidable chest. Raising her gaze, she beheld the figure standing triumphantly atop the larger portion of the vanquished creature.
Her eyes gleamed with intensity, and her smile widened.
"Still so reckless, huh? Morgiana," said Liliana, placing her sword on her shoulders.
"Liliana!" The spearwoman rushed towards her and almost crushed her in a powerful embrace.
"Hah... haha... you... wait... can’t breathe..."
"Uh? Oh, sorry... But still, you’re here! I was so worried when I heard that a Player was going through the East... I heard there were no survivors."
Liliana smiled at him and looked at the sky.
"Well, it’s normal since we retreated, we can’t fight these things... but let’s talk about it later, it’s not over yet."
Griffins soared through the sky, their majestic wings beating against the wind as they closed in on their target. Meanwhile, on the ground below, horned monsters charged forward with menacing determination.
Liliana stood her ground, her sword gleaming in the sunlight as she enveloped herself in a protective blue aura.
"Worry no more, the vanguard is here! Let’s go, Holy Knights!"
Behind the emissaries, numerous soldiers in traditional armor of the Holy Knights threw themselves in all directions, launching a multitude of attacks on the monsters.
As the captain’s gaze fell upon the long-awaited reinforcements, a surge of adrenaline coursed through his veins, invigorating his weary body.
A triumphant smile spread across his face, and with a voice filled with both relief and determination, he unleashed a powerful war cry that pierced through the chaos of the battlefield.
The sound of his rallying call acted as a catalyst, igniting a fervor within the hearts of the other emissaries who had fought tirelessly by his side.
In a fierce clash that endured for a grueling three hours, the valiant emissaries valiantly fought against the invading forces. With unwavering determination, they skillfully eliminated the enemy, ensuring the safety of the citizens.
Their heroic efforts bought precious time for the inhabitants to evacuate the city, escaping the clutches of danger.
Afterward, they gathered the bodies of their fallen comrades and proceeded to identify them while the healers in shape and some from the city tended to the wounded.
In the background, Liliana and Morgiana were talking.
"Okay, okay, this is the last time I do something this crazy," Morgiana said, trying to calm Liliana down.
"I know your reputation, you always go too far! Do you realize you could have died if I was one second late?"
"Oh but you’re always on time to save my ass, maybe I did it on purpose." She laughed lightly but when she saw her friend’s face, she coughed nervously.
"I mean... I was a little too desperate THIS time. We keep losing land, it’s the last town in the west."
"And if you die here, you won’t save the remaining cities, do you find it funny to have a heroic death? Can you sometimes think about how your friends feel? I’m used to seeing corpses... but if it’s one of my friends... I won’t forgive you."
She looked away, squeezing her arm.
Morgiana glanced at her, a hint of surprise flickering in her eyes, before breaking into a warm, affectionate smile. She gently patted her on the shoulder.
"Sorry, I promise I’ll be more careful from now on. I’ll never do you the honor of burying me."
Liliana smiled at her in response. They looked at the setting sun, Liliana scratching her nose.
"It’s crazy how fast things have gone... I miss the time we failed in these D-rank rifts, I also wonder what’s happened to Mr. Kraim."
"I hear things aren’t as bad in the South, he should be fine, hiding with his beer."
"Haha... you’re mean. But yes, it really looks like him. By the way, I wanted to ask you something."
"Hmm?"
Liliana kept her gaze fixed on the sun and then turned to her friend.
"Are you considering applying for the Kalaharis Expedition?"

In a distant place, far away from the presence of any terrifying creatures, yet known for its eerie display of lifeless bodies, stood the majestic residence of the Queen.
Moonra knocked on his sister’s bedroom door, Ratoncia fidgeting beside him.
"It’s really bad... can’t you break the door? Just make it look like a sibling fight."
"... No, I’m not crazy enough to destroy Mother’s property. Hey, Solaria! Open that door now! It’s been too long now!"
He knocked with insistence, but the girl remained silent.
"... Just how much... Hey, are you sure she’s okay? You said she’s barely eating."
His eyes fixated on the ceiling, yet there was no response to be found. In the midst of this silence, Ratoncia whispered under her breath, her fingers fidgeting with each other.
"Nosfera is on night duty to watch over her, Prince. I can guarantee you that even if the mansion were attacked, she would not wake up, but trust her, if she said the Princess is fine, then she is definitely... hm?!"
She suddenly flinched and jumped back. Moonra looked at her worriedly.
"What? Is there a problem?"
"It’s been a while since I’ve been comic relief, I need to get back into character soon!" She took a block of cheese out of a small box in her pocket and bit into it impatiently.
"For her majesty! Nom!"
Moonra looked at this creature in disbelief then shook his head and knocked on the door again.
"Hey, Solaria! If you don’t open your door now, I’m really going to break in!"
"Huh? Didn’t You say..."
"Shut up, stupid rat."
"Aw... thank you."
She gave him a big smile, making him wince even more. He took a few steps back and held out his fist.
"Solaria, I’m warning you, I’m coming!"
The room remained eerily quiet, with no one making a sound. Gritting his teeth, he threw a punch filled with energy, smashing through the bedroom doors and causing a shiver to run down his spine.
"... Oh no... my mother’s door... I... I... Hey, Ratoncia, we’re in... UH?!"
But he was all alone, the mouse girl vanished as swiftly as he made his breakthrough, leaving him to face the consequences solo.
He trembled a little, fearing his mother’s reaction, but when he finally paid attention to the room, his eyes widened.
A pile of toys and stuffed animals strewn, clothes strewn about, the room was in a terrible state, but what really caught his attention was the wide open window.
"... Oh my God... This idiot."
