Chapter 163: Conclusion: A Trial Of Two Doras (1)
Within this chaotic and absurd backdrop, a wave of confusion washed over everyone as they struggled to process the weight of what they had just heard.
The two Doras stood before them, emanating a luminosity that mirrored the stark contrast between day and night, leaving an uncomfortable impression lingering in the air.
However, it was the overtly content expression etched upon the face of the more self-assured Dora that sparked concern among the onlookers.
Freya, hastily tightening the grip on her bathrobe, swiftly surveyed their unfamiliar surroundings, confirming their sudden transportation to an entirely different world.
"What do you mean by ’true Dora’? Aren’t you already Dora?"
Dora’s eyebrow arched in surprise, and he leaned in closer, eager to catch every word as if he had misunderstood.
"Are you serious? Have you forgotten what we’ve been working on for weeks? We are Doras, but our goal is to become the Dora of this world. To achieve that, we need to eliminate certain individuals. Write that somewhere."
Freya’s head bobbed with uncertainty as she cast a fleeting glance at her comrades, each one fully cognizant of the precariousness of their circumstances.
In a swift motion, Mercy blinked her eyes once, a silent acknowledgment that she comprehended the message conveyed by Freya.
"Um... but where are we? What is this place?"
"Oh, this? Nothing of real importance, just a kind of illusion, or rather a temporary world. Here, no one will disturb us."
They exchanged glances, and this time Iris nodded.
"I see... but what is the purpose? You are Doras, so why go to such lengths? And why are there two of you?"
"Answer to question 2: This is an illusion, a virtual world where we have unlimited imaginary capabilities. Thanks to the connection between one of you and someone, We have gained insight into some significant moments you have gone through, through a mutual connection, allowing us to reconstruct these events based on this individual’s recollection. Answer to question 1: Do you think we are fools? We are Dora, so why do you persist in avoiding us?"
Iris flinched and quickly looked away, while Dora flashed a confident grin and crossed his arms.
"No need to fret. We’ve taken your concerns into account and acknowledge your reservations. If you don’t perceive us as Dora, we’ll demonstrate our superior abilities instead of just being Dora."
He advanced closer to the edge of the cliff.
"We will depict numerous scenarios experienced by Dora and illustrate how we would have handled them. This way, you can assess whether we are truly deserving of the title of the true Dora. Now, follow us."
Petrified by what they were witnessing, they saw him stepping forward into nothingness, only to disappear into an unseen barrier
The group stood in silence, processing the surreal event, before turning their gaze towards the dean, who was still staring off into the distance.
With a deep breath, she finally looked down and locked eyes with the ’fake’ Dora, himself keeping his gaze lowered.
"Let’s go, you don’t want to provoke him," she said, leading the way.
They proceeded to the edge of the precipice and mimicked the dean who walked into the void without hesitation.
The surroundings blurred around them, and when their vision cleared, they found themselves in the most unexpected location - the origin of everything.
Two rows of pillars, a vast ruined temple, ancient slabs shattered on the ground, peculiar black vegetation, moss, or a forest of trees on colossal rocks, and a sky redder than a pool of blood.
They had returned to the undead Rift.
They looked around, paralyzed by the scene. Lilith instinctively grabbed her hammer, trembling beside Marie.
"Stay calm, you’re stronger now, we know how to handle them," reassured the puppeteer, gathering energy particles around her.
Abruptly, an ominous black mist descended upon the surroundings, swiftly permeating the air and extending its reach in every possible direction.
"Damn... The temple, now!" urged Freya, drawing a pink and yellow trail with her fingers.
"Calm down!" the dean shouted.
They came to an abrupt halt, taken aback by her reaction.
"Is it so difficult to use a bit of reasoning? Nothing here is real; this is an illusion. He will be the one taking action."
"To be fair, we mentioned illusion, but the line between illusion and reality is our desire," remarked Dora, perched on a rock a short distance away. "Nevertheless, good job understanding our intentions, Candace, as expected from someone as astute as you."
The dean merely glanced at him, and suddenly the boy stood before them.
"This is the full extent of abnormal magic, a virtual reality based on the memories of one of you. This place appears to be a crucial moment in your life, triggering you despite your superiority here."
Marie hesitated for a moment before asking.
"Hold on... If you can replicate a scenario like this, couldn’t you use it to recover your memory? Instead of killing people?"
"Imagine watching a movie about an event you don’t recall experiencing. We may understand its significance, but would we truly feel the same?"
She flinched and clenched her fists. Dora turned away from them, snapped his fingers, and triggered an explosion in the center of the temple.
"Now, let’s assess the situation here compared to the previous encounter with Dora."
Confusion filled their faces as they turned their attention to the ongoing battle, their eyes widening in shock.
Members of the Shining Sword, Hope, Cid, and Kraim were engaged in combat with the undead. Meanwhile, Dora and Eryl were fighting a larger group surrounding them, while the nobles remained protected in a bubble.
This surreal spectacle, reminiscent of a historical drama, was captivating. Gradually, the unfolding events mirrored those of the past.
Cid sustained an injury, Hope was visibly frightened, Lilith was terrified on the ground, and Marie and Sana were nearly depleted of energy.
The scene abruptly froze, as if paused with remote control.
Dora nodded and crossed his arms.
"It’s intriguing how the situation has evolved even in our presence, despite us dealing with more monsters... but it made things easier. You, the blond boy, we don’t feel pain in the same leg that was injured, does that imply that you underwent amputation?"
Cid reacted but remained silent, casting a fierce look at Dora.
"And you, guinea pig 2, you were utterly terrified and couldn’t land a blow, don’t you think this is a severe blow to your reputation?"
Lilith was on the verge of shouting at him until she noticed Dora’s gaze fixed on Hope.
The latter, oddly, remained composed, his gaze captivated by his former self.
Dora snapped his fingers once more, causing black smoke to envelop the surroundings, dispelling all illusions.
"Now, we can all acknowledge that the situation was quite dire, mishandled by the previous Dora, so let’s replace him with us, the improved Dora. Hammer girl, how do you envision things unfolding?"
Lilith, feeling a bit uneasy, clenched her fist and bit her lip.
Unable to respond, Marie stepped in for her.
"I suppose you would eliminate them all from the start?"
"Exactly."
He snapped his fingers, displaying an image of himself obliterating the entire temple in an instant.
"The former Dora needlessly endangered all of you, but if we were in his position, none of you would have suffered. We would have granted you a swift victory in a mat-"
"No, they would have perished."
All eyes turned to Candace. Dora, taken aback by her unexpected remark, tilted his head.
"... Candace?"
With a fixed gaze on the smoldering wreckage, she spoke calmly.
"This was just a D-rank Rift, and you always scoff at anything below S-rank soul stones. Constantly lamenting about elite S-rank fighters that you kill daily, why would you even consider a mission like this? They would have ventured forth without you, facing peril, while you remained oblivious to the fact that your former comrades had to quit as emissaries."
Her eyes shut, and she turned towards him, a sorrowful look in her gaze.
"The previous Dora made errors, was ridiculous, but it was those very mistakes that shaped him into a better leader, that made him a formidable person. This imperfection even with all his abilities, and his genuine concern for his people."
"... Huh?... What... Hold on, this is off-topic; we’re discussing a hypothetical scenario where we were supposed to be present. It’s convenient to praise the former Dora for his compassion, but he too could have declined, and we also prioritize the welfare of our people."
"Then where is Zuri?"
Dora furrowed his brow and studied Candace intently, his eyes filled with a mix of confusion and disbelief. The way Candace was behaving seemed completely irrational to him, leaving him feeling increasingly puzzled.
Troubled, he cast a quick glance at the distant silhouette of Zuri.
"We understand her significance, but she wasn’t in town when we initiated this experiment... However, once we kill someone, our memories will resurface."
With a dismissive gesture, he caused the image to vanish and proceeded towards the Rift’s entrance.
"Let’s move on to the next phase; we’re just beginning."
Candace fixed her gaze on him and trailed behind as the rest followed suit. Mercy averted her eyes momentarily, noticing Hope who hesitated before joining them.
Their eyes locked briefly, and as he furrowed his brow, she averted her gaze.
