Chapter 34 - 34 34 The New Village Chief
34: Chapter 34 The New Village Chief 34: Chapter 34 The New Village Chief Soon, Chen Yang returned home and locked the three wild chickens in the vacant chicken coop.
After doing all this, Chen Yang turned to the cowshed to check on the wild rabbits, hoping to find a pleasant surprise, like one of the pregnant does having given birth.
Unfortunately, the pregnant does in the cowshed had not given birth.
Chen Yang felt a bit disappointed, shook his head, and was ready to turn around and continue catching wild chickens.
However, at this moment, Chen Yang suddenly remembered that he had seemingly forgotten to feed the rabbits today!
“How could I have forgotten to cut the grass?
Most of these rabbits are pregnant does—if one gets starved, my loss would be huge!” Chen Yang slapped his forehead, quickly turned around, found a sickle from the pile of clutter, and dashed to the wild vegetable patch behind the village, planning to cut some wild vegetables and weeds to feed them.
Rushing to the wild vegetable patch behind the village, Chen Yang harvested speedily.
Fortunately, not many people in the village raised livestock, so the wild vegetables and weeds were growing robustly.
Before long, Chen Yang had harvested a lot of weeds and wild vegetables, enough to feed the wild rabbits at home for two or three days.
Looking at the large swath of weeds he had taken down, Chen Yang felt satisfied.
Putting the sickle behind him and holding the weeds, he was ready to go back and feed the rabbits.
Yet, on his way back, Chen Yang ran into Aunt Zhang from the village, who was carrying a hoe to weed the cornfield behind the village.
The fifty-something Aunt Zhang was surprised to see Chen Yang carrying a big bundle of weeds.
“Yang Zi, what are you doing with so many weeds?
Did you start raising livestock?” Aunt Zhang curiously asked.
“Yes, just some small-scale farming, ready to go back and feed them,” Chen Yang casually nodded and whisked past Aunt Zhang.
Watching the hurried Chen Yang, Aunt Zhang didn’t say much and stepped aside to let him pass first.
Soon, Chen Yang returned home with a big pile of fresh fodder and fed it to the rabbits.
As soon as he threw in the fodder, the wild rabbits started eating frantically, as if they were starving.
“Hehe, luckily I found out in time, otherwise the loss would have been significant.
While they’re eating, I’ll just put the feeding trough and water trough in,” Chen Yang laughed from ear to ear as he crouched at the entrance of the cowshed, watching the rabbits going crazy over the food.
Then, he went back to the storeroom in the house and moved all the things he had bought from the county town that day out to the yard.
First, he carefully placed the water grass and feeding troughs he had bought for the rabbits inside.
After that, he took out the mesh and covered some holes and doors of the pigsty.
In this way, the pigsty, in a sense, became an enclosed space, and the wild chickens wouldn’t be able to fly out.
Looking at his handiwork, Chen Yang was very pleased.
His little farm was starting to take shape.
“Let’s put in the three chickens first to see if there are any loopholes.
If they run away, at least it’s only three,” Chen Yang thought, turning around and putting the three wild chickens he had caught into the pen.
When Chen Yang took the chickens out of the coop, they were flapping wildly.
Perhaps they thought Chen Yang was going to slaughter them.
Not until they were put inside the pigsty and touched ground did they calm down.
Holding their heads high, they walked around the fairly spacious pigsty, seemingly inspecting the surroundings.
Chen Yang shut the door and carefully checked for any gaps again.
Once he was sure there were no flaws, he left the backyard with peace of mind.
A busy morning with many tasks completed.
By the time Chen Yang went from the backyard to the clinic, it was nearly noon.
As Chen Yang opened the door to the clinic, he saw many widows from the village passing by his house, leading their cattle back from toiling in the fields.
Seeing the elderly aunts, Chen Yang greeted them warmly.
But when he saw those still charming, young and sexy aunties and sisters-in-law, Chen Yang’s eyes lingered on them intensely.
After all, the flesh that was exposed might as well not be ignored.
“You little rascal, you’ve been away from home every day, doing who knows what.
Maybe cavorting with some widow,” Wang Hong, as she passed by Chen Yang’s door carrying a hoe, gave him a scornful look when she noticed his roving gaze on her.
“Heh, what’s up?
Haven’t opened the clinic recently, auntie wanting to come get a treatment?
Why not come in and sit down?” Chen Yang responded with a chuckle, and stood up wanting to welcome Wang Hong inside, to properly check on her “illness.”
In the midst of the large noontime, the villagers were mostly at home, with a large flow of people around the village.
How could Wang Hong possibly comply with Chen Yang’s wishes.
She just glared at Chen Yang more forcefully, hoisted her hoe over her shoulder, and walked back home, swaying her hips on the way.
After Wang Hong left, Chen Yang didn’t continue sitting at the entrance of his house, but turned and went inside to start preparing a meal for himself.
“Eat well, so in the afternoon I can go catch wild chickens!” Mentioning wild chickens, Chen Yang was very excited, this was his road to riches!
After making himself a nice lunch and filling himself up, Chen Yang thought about how the midday sun was still quite strong, so he didn’t rush off to catch wild chickens.
Instead, he lay down comfortably on the rocking chair in the clinic, planning to sleep snugly for a while, and wait for the sun to lessen a bit before going after the wild chickens.
However, before Chen Yang could lie down for long, old Liu from the village committee, hunching his back with hands clasped behind him, entered the clinic.
“Yang Zi, are you home?” Old Liu shouted into the clinic.
“Hm?” Hearing the call, Chen Yang abruptly woke from his half-asleep state.
“Yo, Uncle Liu, what’s up, you looking for me for something?”
Old Liu, seeing Chen Yang shoot up from the rocking chair, revealed a smile on his face.
“Yang Zi, Uncle Liu’s here to ask you for a little favor!”
“What’s that.” Chen Yang asked.
“It’s about the vacant village chief position in our village, you see.
The town called today, ready to appoint a new village chief to lead us in Weed Slope to wealth and all that!”
“Then they said we need someone from our village to pick him up in town, and I was thinking our village only has your electric tricycle, see if you can help Uncle Liu go to town and pick them up?”
Liu Man’s face was all smiles, expecting Chen Yang’s response.
Looking at Uncle Liu’s smiling face, Chen Yang felt embarrassed to refuse, after all, he was also a part of the village.
And being one of the few able-bodied men in the village, it was only right to do something for the place.
“Alright, Uncle Liu, I’ll have time to make a trip to town tomorrow.” Chen Yang nodded and agreed.
“Then thank you, Yang Zi!” Seeing Chen Yang agree, old Liu’s smile grew wider, and then he immediately pulled out an old-style cell phone from the pouch at his waist, tapped it a few times, and opened a text message: “Yang Zi, take down this number, this is the new village chief’s phone number, once you get to town, just call this number and you’ll be set!”
“Alright.”
Chen Yang glanced at the phone number on the text, then took out his phone and took note of it.
“That’s settled then, Uncle Liu, I’ve got it down, I’ll make a trip to town tomorrow,” Chen Yang said with a smile.
“That’s great, Uncle Liu thanks you, I’ve got other matters to attend to, so I’ll be off!” Uncle Liu walked off happily, hands behind his back.
Watching Uncle Liu’s retreating figure, Chen Yang couldn’t help but shake his head.
Uncle Liu was the member with the longest tenure on the village committee, by rights, since the village was without a chief, he should have been the one to assume the position.
Who would have known a village chief would drop from the sky, truly exasperating.
“Tomorrow, I really want to see who this person is, to actually be able to lead our Weed Slope to wealth,” Chen Yang shook his head again, then turned and rested in the rocking chair for a while longer.
When the sun wasn’t so scorching anymore and the villagers began to head out from their homes to work,
Chen Yang, too, took the bait, picked up a basket, and set off with a bamboo basket in hand, continuing to Weed Slope to trap wild chickens!
It didn’t take long for Chen Yang to reach the spot where he had trapped chickens that morning, then he began to follow the steps from the morning routine.
Lay bait, set up traps, and hide in the nearby weeds, quietly waiting for the prey to take the bait.
Although Chen Yang’s method was somewhat tedious, it was still somewhat effective, with him managing to catch a plump wild chicken on average every twenty minutes or so.
Chen Yang spent the entire afternoon repeating the process of setting traps.
When it was almost dark, Chen Yang had already caught nearly twenty wild chickens.
Looking at the basket packed full with wild chickens, Chen Yang returned home, thoroughly satisfied.
