Chapter 136: Endgame (3)

Mass Teleport. Very Long Distance [-5,000 Goodwill Points]

Target: Elowen.

A brilliant flash of white light enveloped Lila, Elara, Lysaria, and the entire contingent from the Underbelly. They vanished in the blink of an eye.

Riku then turned to Marquis Gregor, Charles, the gathered Hummer guards, and all the other guards of Luxia who were fighting on the ground. Slowly, he raised a hand.

Mass Blessing of Fortitude [-20,000 Goodwill Points]

A gentle golden light washed over them, infusing them with a feeling of warmth and strength.

"The Light, it has come to save us."

"Look at our Holy High Archon. She is practically bathed in pure white light. There is no way we can lose now."

"Long live the Blessed Mother. Long live the Holy Light."

Cries of surprise and excitement echoed throughout the people who were fighting. Seraphina, who was leading the people, glanced at RIku, who had now finished casting his spell.

"It’s not much," Riku murmured to himself. "But it should help."

Riku gave Seraphina one last look, wordlessly communicating what needed to be done. Seraphina just gave him a short nod, acknowledging her role.

With that, Riku turned and leaped from the balcony.

Flight [-20 Goodwill Points]

He shot into the night sky, a solitary figure following the silvery thread towards the heart of the plague, leaving the fate of Luxia in the raging battle below.

-------------------

Riku shot through the night sky. The silvery thread from his Tracker’s Scent spell pulled him steadily forward, a luminous guide leading him away from the chaos of the battle and deeper into the heart of Luxia.

He flew over the grand manors of the Noble’s Quarter, past the glowing spires of the central temple, and into a district where the air itself seemed to change. The clean, crisp night was replaced by the acrid sting of strange chemicals and the thick smoke of a hundred alchemical forges. The Alchemist’s Quarter.

The silvery trail descended, guiding him into a maze of narrow, winding alleyways, wedged between tall, soot-stained buildings. It finally came to a stop in a dark, forgotten cul-de-sac, ending at a large, unassuming drainage grate set into the cobblestones.

Riku landed silently, his eyes fixed on the grate. The air here was foul, a putrid mixture of chemical waste and the familiar, nauseating metallic tang of the Crimson Creep.

"The trail ends here," Riku thought, his gaze narrowing. The grate was sealed not with a physical lock, but with a complex, pulsating magical ward of deep purple energy. It hummed with a low, menacing power, designed to repel any who drew near.

"That magic... it feels familiar," Clara’s voice whispered in his mind. "It has a touch of necromancy, drawing on the power of the dead to keep the location sealed. Besides, somehow...."

"Somehow what?" Riku asked, curious.

"It kinda feels that the magic here has a similar signature to the spell I had used to attempt to transfer my body earlier."

Riku was puzzled as well. Similar signature? Could this mean...

He had a new hunch, but decided to keep quiet for now. After all, he had no proof.

He extended his hand, focusing his will, analyzing the intricate flow of the enemy’s magic. It was a complex weave, but a weave could be unraveled or, in this case, brute forced.

Revered Holy Light [-500 goodwill points]

A wave of counter-magic, shimmering and white, flowed from his palm. It struck the purple ward not with force, but with precision. The ward flickered violently, its lines of power sputtering and shorting out like a dying circuit. With a final, choked hiss, the purple energy dissolved into nothingness.

Riku gripped the heavy iron grate and lifted it. A wave of toxic, magically charged air washed over him, so foul it would have staggered a normal man. He looked down into a dark, swamp-like abyss.

He remembered Vyon’s dying words: "Underwater... a place... beneath the old city..."

"So this is what he meant," Riku mused grimly, peering into the murky depths. It wasn’t a lake or a cistern, but a festering, subterranean swamp. "Hiding a plague inside a toxic waste dump... it’s the perfect camouflage. No sane person would ever venture down here."

Just as he was preparing to descend, a cloaked figure stepped out from the deep shadows of the alley. Riku instinctively tensed, ready for a fight.

"I had a feeling you would find a way past that seal," the figure said. His voice was weary, but his eyes, sharp and intelligent, held a glint of steely resolve. He pulled back his hood.

It was the former Lord Chamberlain, Arnold.

"Lord Arnold," Riku said, genuinely surprised.

"So, you are the ’Whisper Healer’, I heard a lot about you from my family, the way you saved them, saved my granddaughter from execution, and healed their body," Arnold stated, his gaze sweeping over Riku with profound gratitude. "I have been waiting for you. I wanted to thank you personally for saving my family."

"You knew I’d come here?" Riku asked.

"I had a strong inkling," Arnold replied. "After the King placed my family under his protection, I knew I was free to act. But I also knew the Society of Blood would not simply vanish. The Grand Luminar’s flight was only the beginning. I had previously used my own network to trace their activities, and my search led me here, to this sump. But I lacked the magical skill to bypass their ward myself."

"And why didn’t you tell others about this place?" Riku asked, curious about Arnold’s actions.

"That would have just expedited the plan for the society of blood to release the Crimson Giant. I was not sure if anyone would be able to contend against it. However, when I saw that the giant was already out, I came here in the hope of finding you."

"And don’t ask me how I knew you would come here, just call it an old man’s intuition."

Riku looked at the old man’s eyes and slightly chuckled

"Overseers Minor Divination, right?"
