Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary
Chapter 206 206 Unexpected Interruption

A man fell to the ground and started coughing violently after Avery punched him hard in the gut.

The brawl in the restaurant was still continuing, and things were becoming more chaotic by the second.

Ezra was surrounded on all sides by seven of Doyle's followers, and even then, they could hardly keep him contained let alone try and beat him.

As for some of the other standout members of Avery's team, Olivia was going around jabbing people in the neck with her hands like she was still wielding a spear. Causing them to start gasping for air from the impact.

Kaiden was using his incredible agility to run circles around the guys he was fighting and getting behind them and kicking them in keys areas on their legs to slow them down even more.

'If only we were fully recovered.' Avery thought bitterly.

He, Kasandra, and Jasmine were forced to hold themselves back on account of still adjusting to their physical augmentations. In their current states, a bit of intense movement was fine, but going at it for an extended period of time could cause potential issues. Their entire bodies had recently undergone massive changes, and pushing themselves now was just asking for trouble.

There were also a few members of his team that were not particularly well-versed in close combat.

Havanna was among this group, and the best that she could really do was run around and defend herself. She had no chance to take offensive action against those coming after her. Her specialty was in ranged combat, and obviously pulling out a laser rifle in this situation would only make things far worse.

Trouble with the law was already going to be coming once this fight was over, but if anyone ended up using deadly weapons, the outcome would be far worse. Though, if Doyle or his goons drew their guns first, Avery would not hesitate to follow suit.

'The real problem is that we can't keep them down. They're like zombies. Numbers really can be oppressive.'

Right now, no one from Avery's side had been taken out, but the same could not be said for Doyle's.

Though his forces outnumbered them, they were not nearly as skilled. It was obvious that if any of them had been dedicated mercenaries at one time, that was no longer the case.

They had become stagnant and satisfied with where they were at. Add on their obvious drug and alcohol abuse without receiving periodic medical attention to flush the toxins out of their bodies, and it was apparent that none of them were all that strong. At least by Avery's standards.

Nevertheless, with more than three times the numbers, whenever one of them was taken out, another would take the place of their fallen comrade and some else would administer a dose of recovery nano machines that would get the beaten induvial back up on their feet.

'It's a race against time then.' Avery thought, weaving in between three guys that were desperate to catch him.

When the colony police showed up, the fighting would undoubtably be forced to come to an end. As long as they could hold out that long, Avery's team would win considering Doyle was the aggressor here.

However, the authorities were not the first to show up. It was more members of the same company that Doyle was a leader of that made their appearance only a few minutes into the fight.

They were easy to identify as his compatriots by the emblem that all of them wore on their clothes. Clearly this was the symbol of their mercenary company.

Avery could not help but grimace at the unfortunate turn of events. Things were already hard enough as they were, but now they were going to have more opponents to fight.

'I may have to force my body to move a bit harder and risk causing damage to myself. Dr. Raiti might chew me out for doing so, but hopefully she can fix whatever problems arise.'

Yet, as Avery steeled himself to go all out despite the risks, something unexpected happened.

The other members of Doyle's company that had just arrived did not join in on the fight. Instead, they began restraining those that had been following Doyle's orders.

Needless to say, this was a confusing and unexpected outcome. One that nearly stunned Avery to the point that he almost took a haymaker to the face and only avoided the attack by a hair's breadth.

With what seemed to be infighting amongst their ranks, the mercenaries that had been attacking Avery's team quickly settled down and stopped attacking. There was still a heavy tension in the area, but at least for the moment, hostilities had abated.

"Doyle! What is the meaning of this?!"

An irate voice resounded throughout the restaurant, and a man wearing a well-tailored military style mercenary outfit stomped towards Doyle.

"Burke." Doyle muttered under his breath, a hint of disdain in his tone.

Turning around, wearing a sour expression, Doyle faced the other leader of their mercenary company, and his longtime friend.

"I thought I told you to restrain yourself and let me take care of this. Enacting violence, especially in a public place, is only going to harm our image and reputation further."

"And since when have I needed to take orders from you?! We're equal partners, remember. I didn't think that your way of doing things was going to get us anywhere, so I took action on my own. Now though, you've ruined things."

Doyle and his co-leader swiftly began arguing with each other. With each side trying to get the other onboard with their way of thinking.

While this spectacle was going on, Avery gathered up his team and got everyone into a more defensible position. Just in case another fight broke out and they were forced to defend themselves again.

'Now I understand more about the two different factions Olivia told us about. That guy, I think I heard Doyle call him Burke, is the leader of the more upstanding faction of their mercenary company.' Avery thought, analyzing the situation.

Naturally, if it had only been Doyle and his motley band of goons, their group of mercenaries would not have been capable of operating as the best in around twelve systems, including the Etania System.

They were essentially the bad actors that came along with Burke's respectable forces. Something you just had to ignore as best you could.

'It's obvious to tell by their appearances alone. Burke and his followers are clean and well groomed, while those with Doyle have obviously given up caring about how they present themselves.'

Avery could not understand why someone like Burke would put up with someone like Doyle. Still, he was not privy to their past. All he knew was that they were old friends and had started out as mercenaries together. Perhaps it was just difficult to break old bonds.

Eventually, the two sides' arguments came to an end. Not because they were finished though, but due to the arrival of the colony police.

Thankfully the fighting had already stopped, so things proceeded relatively smoothly.

Doyle's and Burke's band of mercenaries were escorted out first and loaded up onto several vehicles that had pulled up with dozens of officers. When the police had found out that the brawl involved armed and high-ranking mercenaries, they had naturally come out in force to put a stop to it.

After their attackers were taken away, Avery's team was brought out of the restaurant and asked to get into a police vehicle as well.

"Ugh, this is all turning out to be just one big headache." Avery whispered to himself, too quietly for most people to hear him.

Kasandra sitting next to him, with her impeccable hearing, did manage to just barely pick up his muttering and started rubbing him on the back reassuringly.

"We didn't start that fight and the police know it. We've got dozens of eyewitnesses, and the security cameras in the restaurant should have captured everything. We'll be fine."

Avery was grateful for her confidence, but he was not quite certain everything would go so smoothly.

Certainly, one of Doyle's guys was the first to lay his hands on him. Yet, Kasandra had retaliated by breaking the man's arm. Which had been the last straw that had seen the fighting break out.

Of course, Avery was not going to chastise Kasandra for her actions. He was grateful for how she had moved to protect him, and honestly, he had been only moments away from doing something similar. The only difference was that he intended to grab and shatter the guy's wrist instead.

Luckily, at the police station, Avery's team got off relatively easily. From all the evidence they had gathered, it was clear that Doyle's party had been the aggressors.

Still, Kasandra breaking the arm of the man that was assailing Avery was considered excessive force, and the ensuing fight had caused too much of a scene for the colony police to just ignore.

A fine of a few thousand Krenin was levied against each of them, and everyone in Avery's team was barred from entering Etania II for the next three weeks. The last thing that the station wanted was for them to bring more trouble to it.

As for Doyle's and Burke's punishments, the police would not divulge that information to Avery. Obviously though, Doyle and his followers were likely to face more severe consequences than they had.

After all of the proceedings were finished at the police station, Avery's group was escorted back to their vessels and promptly forced to leave the colony.
