Chapter 1699: We’ll be having visitors soon.
"The whys aren’t the only questions now—but rather... Zoren, you need to remember what you did. Because you’re the only person in here who actually knows the why, the how, the what, and the who."
Silence fell on them as the couple—Zoren and Penny—stared at Finn, while the latter mirrored their gaze. They didn’t let the information laid out affect them outwardly, but even so, they let it sink in.
"That’s... that’s impossible," Penny remarked. "How could Renren remember the past? Try to kill him?"
Finn shrugged. "I don’t know, but at this point, I’m getting very impatient as well. Because even if I worked closely with him, I felt like I was just as in the dark as everyone else."
Zoren kept his mouth pressed into a thin line, lowering his gaze as he thought about it.
"All I know is Jonathan’s rage isn’t justified, but there’s a reason. A reason only he could answer—if he weren’t stabbed to death. Or you, Zoren," Finn continued solemnly. "But then again, it’s almost impossible to regain memories from the past."
A brief, conflicted look flickered in Finn’s eyes. They had long suspected that Zoren was just like them. But that theory had been shut down by the fact that someone—or something—likely changed the course of history in the Pierson Family’s timeline.
After all, Finn knew Naylani Pierson. He had met her in his previous life. But in this lifetime, Naylani was dead.
"There’s..." Zoren spoke, his voice low, lifting his head to meet Finn’s, and then Penny’s. "There’s a chance."
"Renren—"
"I told you about the hypnosis," he said. "I can try that again."
Penny frowned, more concerned than upset. "Renren, the last time you did that, you almost relapsed. You couldn’t even sleep properly back then, and your health—you’re still recovering."
"But just like what Finn said, it’s the easiest." Zoren faced her squarely. "I’ll be fine. Back then, I tried it while being unstable. But I can try again. At least it’s better than doing nothing."
Reluctance dominated Penny’s face, her hesitation evident.
Zoren reached out to her and squeezed her hand gently, nodding at her reassuringly. "It’s going to be alright."
Back then, Zoren’s support system was already there, thanks to his wife and her family. However, for him, everything felt like temporary bliss. Like he still had to tread on eggshells—because if he took a single large step, everything might shatter like glass.
But a lot had happened to Zoren since then.
Atlas had tried to cut his lips with a chainsaw, and yet, the family still stuck with him. Atlas was still there for him, roasting him whenever Zoren made even the slightest mistake—like breathing.
Charles still called him a daughter-thief, but still welcomed him home.
Hugo remained as his emotional support, even though he had started rooting for Mint.
Slater still hated him. Slater was still the biggest hater of this marriage—but he had been there for them when it counted.
Allison, Jessa, the Cortez twins, Nina, and now Finn...
All of them had proven they weren’t here temporarily.
"I can try again, Penny," he said under his breath, his eyes sincere. "Because I know no matter what... you’re not leaving."
The two of them stared at each other quietly while Finn observed them from the sidelines.
A shallow breath escaped Finn as he snapped his eyes back to the wall. Just like Zoren, Finn was more open now in speaking his mind—and his past—especially when it came to Zoren. Because, just like Zoren, he wanted to protect the Bennet Family. He wanted to protect Nina.
In their first life, Finn had saved Nina out of a shred of humanity hanging in the balance. He saved her not because of who she was, but because, at some point, saving a life after ruining countless others was just a petty and fragile attempt to restore some balance to his descent.
A descent that Zoren had once professionally and skillfully glided down.
"If this is successful, then..." he whispered, shifting his attention back to the two of them, "things might become a lot easier... or just more complicated."
Deep in his heart, he wanted to believe in Zoren.

Meanwhile, somewhere across the globe, the midday sun shone brightly on this side of the world.
In a mansion situated in a secluded area, the garden was filled with lush greenery and all sorts of blooming flowers. The midday sun made everything shine brighter, the wind carried the heat away, and the trees whispered to each other in the breeze, offering coolness in return.
At the center of the garden, a pavilion stood atop a still lake. Lotus flowers bloomed in the water, their leaves and vines drifting lazily on the surface.
An elderly, petite man dressed in a well-ironed butler uniform stood at the edge of the bridge leading to the pavilion.
There, standing on the arched bridge, was a woman in a long floral maxi dress. Her sleeves reached her small wrists, and her head was covered by a foldable, wide-brimmed straw hat. She was peacefully feeding fish in the lake.
The old butler quietly approached her, stopping just at the end of the bridge.
"Madam," he called, his voice solemn. "Commander Nam was ambushed by Homeland Security."
The woman’s slightly outstretched hand froze, a few pieces of fish feed still resting in her palm.
"According to one of our scouts, he tried to follow the protocol. However, that woman managed to stop it. He ended up injured in the hand," the butler continued, his tone flat and formal. "Now he’s been taken to the Homeland Security base for questioning."
The woman’s hand remained still for a moment before she let the fish feed fall into the water. She didn’t say a word as she turned her back on the butler.
"How inconvenient," she said, her voice alluring yet detached.
"Our men are waiting for your order, Madam," the butler said, lowering his head. "They’re ready."
The woman glanced over her shoulder, barely able to see the butler’s black shoes beneath her large hat. "Commander Nam will not talk. And that little girl in Homeland Security... she can be dealt with later."
She then looked ahead toward the pavilion and began walking. "Prepare a banquet instead," she murmured. "We’ll be having visitors soon."
The butler sighed, then turned to look at the lake from the bridge—just in time to see pieces of human bones begin to surface, as the Madam’s piranhas finished yet another feast.
