Chapter 1684: He put a hit on her, huh?

Dean never liked Naylani Pierson.

He never met her, but he hated her even before he could understand the meaning of the word.

Why?

The reason was simple.

It was Naylani who made Zoren sick. If Zoren weren’t sick, he wouldn’t have to get all that attention as the sickly child. Zoren wouldn’t have to just sit around and not play with him. And Dean wouldn’t have gotten scolded if he forced him to play when they were children.

If not for Naylani, things would surely be different.

Zoren might be more normal. He might attend school just like Dean and Ray, compete with them, lose at one point, and manage to form proper bonds rather than one founded on pity and guilt.

It was all Naylani’s fault.

For stabbing a child, attempting to burn him, and then hanging herself because she knew she deserved to rot in jail.

On top of that, Naylani was the reason... Dean felt like his father was just a piece of crap. Not because of Naylani directly, but because of Enzo Pierson. Because even after everything, Dean still caught a glimpse of what a father should be to their children.

His memory of Enzo Pierson was short and fragmented, but he remembered envying Zoren for having a father like that man. A man who took the role of not just a father but also Zoren’s mother. Not someone like Dean’s father, who had made him wonder one thing while growing up.

When would he bring home another woman? Or say he had another child from another woman? How many more bastards would he confess to having, and how many more would Dean have to listen to in some child support discussions?

The last time he heard that his father had another child from his mistress was a few years ago.

Talk about why everyone from the first branch of the Pierson Family supported Dean, instead of his father.

It wasn’t Naylani’s fault, and he knew that, but he still wanted to blame her for it because she deserved hell.

So, seeing a picture of Naylani, who surely had grown older than the one Dean managed to peek at many years ago, didn’t stop him from saying something.

"How come that bitch is still alive?"

Atlas arched a brow at him with a side eye. "Language," he said as he set his eyes on the photo as well. "That is what I wanted to know as well."

"Is she... Naylani Pierson?" he added quietly. "Or someone who just looks like her?"

"That’s Naylani," Dean remarked with certainty. "There’s no doubt about it."

Atlas gave the man another side eye, not really surprised at Dean’s certainty. After all, Dean was unaware of Charles and Haines’s story and what else was brewing even before finding out about this place.

"Anyway, did you find out what those pills are?" he asked, changing the subject. "If you’re here, that means you’re done?"

Dean shrugged indifferently. "Of course."

’Why do you have to make me ask the obvious?’

"Heh. I like it when you talk," Dean flashed him a smile. "It reminds me what it would be like to be someone without personality."

"Speak."

"They’re not the lethal drug," he said. "They look like it, and they carry almost the same properties. At least according to my brief analysis. Obviously, it needs more time to confirm that and more tests. But I can say with almost certainty, it’s not."

"Then, what is it?"

"More like it’s a counterfeit."

"A counterfeit?"

Dean nodded. "It seems it’s the closest they got to having the same effect as the lethal drug, but less potent. After all, it didn’t have the secret ingredient needed for the actual pill, which makes it special."

"I see..." Atlas nodded, raising his brows as Dean handed him a small transparent container with some pills inside.

"Just in case you want to crush it and sprinkle it in someone’s drink," Dean said.

"Where are the rest?"

Dean’s smile stretched until his eyes were squinting. "I want to keep the rest because I want to sprinkle it in someone’s drinks."

"Give the rest to me."

"Why would I do that?"

"Because I’m afraid that someone is me."

"Heh." Dean grinned. "I like you enough not to do that."

"Give them to me."

"Nope." Without a care if Atlas was prepared or not, he tossed the small round container and just hoped Atlas would catch it. Fortunately, Atlas was fast enough to catch it mid-air. "I need the rest to study. As you can see, I am on a leave given to me by my Uncle because he can’t give up his marriage for me. I need something to do."

Atlas frowned, his eyes sharp on Dean. After a second, he gave in, knowing Dean wasn’t stupid enough to kill somebody. At least, not without a plan. As long as Atlas was careful, this guy wouldn’t poison him.

"Let me know if you find something interesting in it," he said, tucking the small container into his suit pocket before taking his phone out.

"Do you think you’re my boss or something?"

"You still report to me." Atlas took out his phone and cast the man a look. "So, yes, I do think you are beneath me."

Dean’s face soured, watching Atlas take photos of the wall of information. He clicked his tongue and looked at it, scanning it, getting a bit confused.

"Huh?" he hummed, his eyes drifting to where a small photo of Finn and Nina was taped. He walked closer to it, furrowing his brows. "Hey."

Atlas didn’t answer.

Dean pointed at this area and turned to him. "He’s going to kill your sister."

"Hmm?" Atlas raised his brows, taking more pictures on this side before walking closer to where Dean was standing. He hadn’t had the chance to explore everything yet, and Atlas didn’t want to stay in this suffocating underground for long.

Hence, he was taking photos for evidence to send to Hugo, Zoren, Slater, and Charles to let them know of this discovery. He did notice this section, though. He simply didn’t pay attention to it just yet.

But now...

"He put a hit on her, huh?" Atlas whispered, seeing the bounty request on Nina’s head and Finn’s. "Click some more photos for me because we need to get out of here—fast."
