Chapter 106: Chapter 106: The Youth to be Feared
The hospital was exceptionally quiet late at night.
Elder Fu pinched the bridge of his nose. By rights, at his age, he shouldn’t need to be on night duty. Yet, this kid’s assistant always called personally, each time sounding extremely urgent. In light of Bao Shaojin’s substantial annual investments in the hospital, Elder Fu felt it was his duty to attend in person.
After receiving the call, he thought it was Lady Bao who was ill, but it turned out to be a strange young girl.
This was already the second time he’d seen Bao Shaojin bring her to the hospital.
The girl’s illness wasn’t life-threatening, and Elder Fu could clearly tell that this Bao Family kid was overreacting to her illness. As an observer, Elder Fu could discern a thing or two.
Bao Shaojin looked at the old man who was shaking his head, his eyebrows slightly furrowed, "If it’s nothing serious, I’ll leave first."
As he was about to leave, Elder Fu tapped the table lightly, his tone lacking his usual warmth, "Wait."
Bao Shaojin’s tall figure stood before the desk, looking proud and somewhat arrogant.
Seeing his poor demeanor, Elder Fu’s keen eyes glinted with a hint of probing, "Since she’s A-Cheng’s girlfriend, it should be A-Cheng staying here, you..." Elder Fu hadn’t forgotten that he’d mentioned the girl’s identity before.
"Elder Fu!" Bao Shaojin’s expression was solemn, his tone neither light nor heavy.
Those who knew Bao Shaojin were aware that he was very well-mannered from a young age and would rarely interrupt others, especially elders. He always maintained the respect due toward Elder Fu, which Elder Fu understood.
Now, hearing the younger man abruptly interrupt him, Elder Fu felt a tension rising in him, realizing that it was none of his business to interfere in the Bao Family’s affairs, so he let it go.
"Perhaps my sleepiness tonight was disturbed by you, making me speak nonsense. If you have matters to attend to, go ahead!" Elder Fu shook his head, sighing.
Upon hearing this, Bao Shaojin remained expressionless, "Thanks for everything tonight!"
After speaking, Bao Shaojin turned and left.
Watching his back, Elder Fu only then noticed he was merely wearing a robe, feeling both surprised and somehow unsurprised.
Having lived so many years, Elder Fu was a well-versed character. The "thanks" from the Bao Family kid just now clearly had another meaning, an attempt to seal his lips, fearing Elder Fu might disclose tonight’s affairs to Lady Bao, thus the premature gratitude.
What a sly one! True to his reputation as a devil in the business world, adept in winning hearts! The Bao Family kid was indeed formidable! Elder Fu pondered repeatedly.
It’s worth noting that up until now, Bao Shaojin was the first to receive praise from Elder Fu!
In the hospital corridor.
Bao Shaojin leaned his tall body against the cold wall, one foot on the stairs, and in the empty space, he stood alone, seeming somewhat desolate. A lit cigarette dangled between his fingers, highlighting his deeply contemplative face.
Smoke swirled around his face, his gaze piercing through it, fixating on a point in the distance as if lost in thought.
When Bao Shaojin returned to the ward, the girl had her eyes closed, sleeping soundly.
A needle was inserted into the back of her pale hand, dripping the IV...
"Mr. Bao." Assistant Lin rose from the sofa near the window upon seeing someone push the door open.
"Get someone to take care of her." Bao Shaojin walked to the bedside, his expression complex.
"Understood." Assistant Lin nodded and left.
With just the two of them left in the ward, the air filled with a faint smell of smoke as Bao Shaojin approached.
Outside the window, the sky was gradually showing traces of light, a harbinger of dawn.
Bao Shaojin took two steps forward, closing the distance between them.
She lay on the bed with her eyes tightly shut, her long lashes fluttering like wings. Due to illness, the girl was glaringly pale, lacking any color, making her delicate pink lips particularly conspicuous.
Her lips were moist, and even though she was sick, they didn’t appear dry, as if tempting someone to savor them, rendering one powerless.
In the quiet room, his gaze was intense, with a hint of sharpness emanating from his being.
An Yin, in a daze, awoke, meeting the man’s sharp pupils as she opened her eyes.
Their eyes locked, neither flinching.
An Yin, dazed and foggy, didn’t quite grasp her situation, her star-like pupils blinked at him.
Her clear gaze seemed to pierce his heart, causing Bao Shaojin to stiffen, recalling that her boyfriend was his cousin, his expression turned grim instantly.
"Awake?" The words came out without emotion, even carrying a slight chill.
A man’s voice echoed in her ear, "I..." An Yin wanted to speak, but her voice was terribly hoarse, likely from yelling for help too vigorously earlier.
Bao Shaojin noticed her anomaly, "Uncomfortable? I’ll get the doctor."
"No." An Yin stopped his actions, "I’m just thirsty and want some water." Swallowing arduously, An Yin finally managed to express herself.
Hearing her weak voice, Bao Shaojin went to the tea room, poured a cup of warm water, and brought it to the bedside.
An Yin tried to reach for it, "Ah..." As she lifted her hand, the drip needle pulled, causing her to wince in pain.
She didn’t know she was on a drip!
"Be careful." Seeing her fussing manner, Bao Shaojin commanded, "Lie down and don’t move."
The man’s words were quite commanding, and An Yin, naturally timid, quickly lay obediently, blinking her round eyes.
The next moment, Bao Shaojin picked up a cotton swab prepared at the bedside, dipped it in water, intending to moisten her lips. As the cotton swab approached her lips, An Yin watched him with curiosity.
"I want to drink water!" She looked at him eagerly.
"You need to wait a while before you can drink." Bao Shaojin reasoned with her.
Initially, due to work reasons, Bao Shaojin often worked tirelessly, which led to stomach problems requiring hospitalization, so he was quite knowledgeable in this aspect.
An Yin pressed her lips tightly, a look of disappointment appearing on her face.
He brought the water-dipped cotton swab to her, touching her tender lips.
An Yin’s body stiffened, her fair cheeks tinged with pink. His pressure was just right, she could even feel a slight tingle. As he paused to dip the swab again, An Yin took a long breath.
It wasn’t until he once more moistened her lips with the swab that An Yin held her breath, her bright eyes deliberately avoiding him, glancing toward the window.
"Don’t exert force, the IV line is backflowing." Bao Shaojin noticed the girl’s tension and suddenly had the impulse to tease her. Clearly a task he could finish quickly, he deliberately slowed his movements.
Upon hearing his words, An Yin’s face turned crimson, biting her lip without speaking.
Bao Shaojin placed the water glass aside and tossed the cotton swab into the trash can.
The spacious room was filled with an air of awkwardness.
An Yin turned her head, gradually relaxing her body. After a few seconds, the blood in the IV line returned to her system.
