Chapter 138: Chapter 138: I need a favour

The word left the tip of my tongue as I looked at her with a puzzled expression resting on my face and my brows were knitted together to form a tiny frown.

"What are you –"

"I heard about what happened!" She shrieked, cutting me off before I could even finish my sentence. I watched as her gaze hardened and she clenched her jaw tightly, never once taking her eyes off me. "I can’t believe you would do that," she sneered, the words that left her lips were dripping with accusation as she glared at me with narrowed eyes, a fiery blaze burning from within.

Realisation dawned upon me within the next second and it finally clicked inside my head. My own mother thought that I intentionally tried to injure Evelyn too. I couldn’t stop the cold chuckle that escaped my lips. I lifted my head to look up at her, and our gazes matched. All I saw was nothing but rage and anger, not even a single ounce of concern for me even though I was injured too.

But I didn’t care anymore as I have gotten so used to it by now, I would even say that I am numb to it.

"I didn’t do anything," I said, my voice filled with certainty. "It slipped and fell before I could grab it. If anything, Evelyn was the one who did it on purpose and she is now trying to frame me to make me the bad guy," I sneered with a disdainful scorn.

She let out a loud scoff. "Of course now you would try to pin the blame on her now," she spat the words out like they were poison in her mouth. "Why would she try to frame you, huh? Not everyone is as manipulative and cunning as you!"

"That’s enough," Xavier demanded through gritted teeth this time, his voice boomed loudly and Jennifer snapped her eyes to look at him with an unhappy look plastered across her face.

"I wasn’t talking to –"

"You were talking to my wife and I have every right to defend her and protect her," he retorted coldly with an intense look swimming in his dark eyes as he clenched his jaws tightly. "I will not let you stand there and accuse her of something she clearly didn’t do. Can’t you see that she is also injured?" He questioned, his tone carrying a sharp edge to it.

Silence stretched between them for a brief moment before he continued, his words slicing through the tension that was lingering in the air between them.

"Oh wait, you probably knew but simply don’t care."

Jennifer’s eyes widened with anger as rage spread through her body like a wildfire. "You!" She snarled as the frown resting between her brows deepened. "I am her mother, I can talk to her however I want," she fought back.

Xavier scoffed with an incredulous look that was stretched across his face.

"If you are actually her mother then maybe you should consider starting to act like one," he challenged. His eyes gleamed with defiance as he kept his gaze steady and his voice remained unwavering as his words rendered her speechless at that moment. He tore his eyes away from her and glanced down at the lunchbag she was holding in her hand. "Don’t you have somebody you want to deliver that to?" He taunted, it was obvious that she was here for Evelyn.

"Somebody that you seem to care awfully a lot for," he added, a hint of suspicion in his voice. Even though they did have the maternity results to prove that Jennifer was indeed Aurelia’s biological mother, something still felt off.

"That’s none of your business," she snapped, jolting him back to reality. "I can care for whoever I want to. Do I need your permission or something?"

A slight smirk tugged at the corners of his lips as the thoughts continued to race inside his mind. "That won’t be necessary. Why don’t you hurry along before the food gets cold and stale?" He commented as he arched his brow at her, amusement dancing in his dark brown eyes.

"Xavier, what are you doing? Who are we looking for?" I asked, my eyes filled with curiosity and anticipation hung on my face as we locked eyes.

We have been walking around the hospital for a while now, seemingly wandering around aimlessly.

"I’m looking for Kelvin," he replied distractedly, his eyes still darting around the place as he searched for the person "I need him... to do something for me..."

I frowned with a confused expression that masked my features. "Kelvin? Who’s Kelvin? And what do you need him to do?" I questioned with a puzzled look etched onto my face this time.

"He’s a doctor here. He can help us with something."

"Why are we –" The words barely left my lips when Xavier called out to him all of a sudden.

"Kelvin!" He exclaimed as his eyes lit up with what seemed like excitement and I watched as the man whipped his head around at the familiar voice. "I have been looking for you, my friend," he said as he slung his arm around his shoulder casually with a huge grin plastered across his face.

"Hey mate," Kelvin greeted with a smile. "What brings you here? Is everything okay?"

"Mhmm..." Xavier muttered under his breath, as his mind buzzed with thoughts I couldn’t understand. Without a single warning, he reached out to grab me by my arm and pulled me to stand right in front of Kelvin. "This is my wife, Aurelia. Aurelia, meet Kelvin, one of my best mates back in school."

"Hi, nice to meet you," I greeted with a smile. He reached out his hand to give me a handshake but quickly retracted his hand when he glanced down and saw the big white bandage wrapped over my palm.

"Your hand..." Kelvin pointed out. "Is everything okay?"

I smiled. "Yeah. Just a cut," I explained casually as if I had not just stitched up my wound.

"I wish you a speedy recovery," he said before he turned to Xavier to meet his eyes. "Xavier, i got to go, I –"

Before he could finish his sentence, Xavier butted in and held him back.

"Kelvin, I need your help. Can you do me a favour?"
