54: Chapter Fifty-Four: Wolf or Dog?
Niu Dachun and his group slipped out into the dark and, tiptoeing, made their way to the back mountain.
But they found Wu Xiaoyu’s chicken farm completely dark.
Were they already asleep?
Or…
maybe they weren’t even there!
Niu Fengfeng suggested that one person take the main road up the mountain to probe the situation, but Niu Dachun, respecting his father’s authority, flatly refused.
The four of them had no choice but to carefully watch their steps and take the small path up the mountain.
People said the mountains were dangerous, but Niu Dachun thought they were talking nonsense.
He and Mrs.
Liu had climbed the mountain so many times, and the only thing they’d encountered was a snake.
What was there to be afraid of?
But his cousins were terrified.
They huddled behind him, holding hands like children, which boosted Niu Dachun’s confidence.
It seemed he was quite the hero in Daxin Village.
It took them more than ten minutes to walk up just over a hundred meters, nervously approaching the chicken farm’s fence.
Niu Dachun was secretly delighted.
Damn it, if you want to act all high and mighty, I’ll cut down all your fences tonight and see how you keep your chickens!
The brothers picked up their tools and started their sabotage.
Already feeling guilty as thieves, they were easily spooked.
Niu Fengfeng accidentally let out a fart, making a “pfft” sound.
His cousins immediately gathered around in panic, “What kind of beast made that sound?
It feels like it’s right next to us!”
Damn it!
How could anyone with such nerves come to do something like this?
Although it was embarrassing to admit, Niu Fengfeng quietly confessed, “Brothers, sorry, that was just me farting!”
For pete’s sake!
The brothers finally noticed the smell and fanned the air in front of their noses with exaggerated gestures before resuming their fence-cutting.
Even though the fences weren’t made of metal, each rope was quite sturdy and tightly woven.
More importantly, they were bound tightly.
It took them a long time just to cut through a small segment.
Niu Dachun had to urge them, “Hurry up, guys!
We don’t want to get caught!”
Niu Fengfeng was about to reply but then felt something moving behind him.
He tapped the shoulder of the person in front and whispered, “I feel like something is watching us from behind.”
The three already jumpy men stopped their actions and listened intently.
All they heard was the wind rustling the leaves and the chirping of insects and frogs in the forest.
“Look at you, scaredy-cat!
If I had known, I wouldn’t have brought you along!” one grumbled and continued their sabotage.
Not long after, another felt something moving behind them and said, “Wait a minute!
There really seems to be something behind us!”
Niu Dachun, annoyed by their constant alarm, said angrily, “Can you guys cut it out?
We’re at the foot of the mountain.”
“Even if there were some wild beasts, they wouldn’t come here!
Otherwise, the chickens would have been snatched long ago without us toiling here.”
The other three realized this made sense and calmed down to continue their “work.”
The wolf squatting by the tree root wasn’t pleased.
It had repeatedly warned them to leave, but they hadn’t gotten the hint.
Seeing the men continue their destruction, the wolf worried that it might get a beating from that guy tomorrow.
It couldn’t handle that guy!
But if it tried to scare them off, it would get in trouble with that guy.
Damn it, what to do?
The wolf was puzzled.
It was supposed to watch the chicken farm but wasn’t allowed to hurt people.
What kind of setup was this?
Niu Dachun and his group were oblivious, having cut through a large section.
Just as they were about to light firecrackers, they heard running behind them and quickly crouched down, turning to look.
What they saw frightened them.
Damn it!
A big, fat wolf was staring right at them!
They wanted to run, but their legs felt like jelly, unable to muster any strength.
Were they all going to die in the wolf’s jaws?
They regretted it deeply.
Why had they agreed to Uncle Mansheng’s plan for sabotage?
Wouldn’t it be better to live peacefully?
What did Wu Xiaoyu’s arrogance have to do with them?
Why not just mind their own business?
Niu Dachun, too, was startled when the wolf locked eyes with him.
But seeing the wolf just staring without moving reminded him of a husky he’d seen in the city.
Oh, shit!
It’s a dog.
No wonder!
If it were a wolf, it would’ve bitten them already.
Niu Fengfeng, having pissed his pants in fear, was about to cry for help but had his mouth covered by Niu Dachun.
This guy could still move.
Why wasn’t he running?
“Guys, don’t be scared!
It’s a dog!” Niu Dachun whispered.
His cousins were bewildered.
A dog?
Your dog looks like this?
It’s clearly a wolf, damn it!
Seeing them still paralyzed with fear, Niu Dachun realized they didn’t believe him.
“Really, it’s a dog.
It’s called a husky and looks a lot like a wolf!
Many city folks keep them.”
“If it were a wolf, it would’ve bitten us already.
Do you think I’d have the time to explain so much?”
Finally, they noticed the wolf just staring without attacking.
Seeing Niu Dachun’s calm demeanor, they started to believe him, though still a bit scared:
“Brother Dachun, are you sure?
If it’s a wolf, we’re dead meat tonight!”
Niu Dachun, seeing their doubt, became exasperated and pulled out his phone, Googling ‘husky.’
He showed them the pictures, and they compared them.
It looked exactly like the dog on the phone.
Finally, they were relieved!
Damn it!
It really is a dog, scared the hell out of me!
One of the guys picked up a stone, ready to throw it at the ‘husky,’ but Niu Fengfeng stopped him.
“Don’t hit it!
If it barks and attracts people, we’ll be blown.
Let’s finish the job.
If we see it again, we’ll catch it and make a stew!”
The idea made them drool, staring at the wolf with gleaming eyes.
The phone said huskies were expensive; might their meat taste good?
The wolf, realizing they thought it was a dog and were even planning to eat it, got angry.
Ignoring Wu Xiaoyu’s rules, it howled at the moon and bared its teeth, charging at them.
Already crouching and slow, they were caught off guard by the howl.
Damn it!
Isn’t it supposed to be a husky?
Before they could react, the wolf sank its teeth into Niu Dachun’s butt, making him scream in pain.
The others, terrified, couldn’t even stand up.
Luckily, Wu Xiaoyu, returning with the Jade Token, heard the cries from the forest and shouted, “Who’s there, damn it!”
The wolf, hearing his voice, released Niu Dachun and ran toward Wu Xiaoyu.
