Chapter 91: Allergic to Dogs
"You’ve forgotten what I said again! Don’t touch me after you’ve touched the dog!"
Damien Sterling, who is particularly concerned about cleanliness, stepped back to clearly prohibit Emma Hart from making a move that he found utterly distasteful.
"Okay, I know," Emma said, lowering her hand that she had raised in front of Damien.
As soon as her hand dropped, Damien couldn’t help but sneeze.
"Achoo!"
Damn, why this sudden sensation? Damien frowned, feeling uncomfortable and tugging at his nose.
His secretary reminded him, "Mr. Sterling, there’s a video conference in half an hour, and it’s almost time."
"Mr. Sterling, someone must be missing you."
"Someone missing me?" Damien was puzzled.
"Yes, sneezing means someone is thinking about you, talking about you. You better go," Emma gestured with a waving motion.
Somehow, whenever Emma’s hand, which had just petted the dog, came close to Damien, he felt the urge to sneeze.
Without further thought, Damien hurriedly turned and left for the company in his car.
With Damien gone, Emma was free to play with Bailey to her heart’s content.
In the evening, as Damien was about to return from work, Mrs. Harris went into the garden to remind Emma, "Miss Emma, the sir is coming back soon. Maybe you should clean up since he doesn’t like you touching the dog."
"Okay," Emma went inside to hastily wash her hands in the bathroom.
"Is that all?"
"What else?" Emma blinked, puzzled by Mrs. Harris’s insinuation.
"You need to take a shower."
"A shower?" Emma was shocked.
Mrs. Harris nodded, "Mr. Sterling specifically instructed before he left that after he was gone, you’d likely spend the day with the dog, no, with Bailey. So, he wanted you to take a shower before he returns, otherwise..."
"Otherwise what?"
"Otherwise, he’ll take the dog away."
Such a harsh man, knowing exactly how to target her fears with threats and ultimatums.
Emma reluctantly took a shower, cleaning herself thoroughly before coming out, and by then, Mrs. Harris had cleaned the villa spotlessly, leaving no trace of Bailey’s scent.
At least, that’s how it seemed to Emma, but for someone with Damien Sterling’s level of cleanliness, passing his scrutiny wouldn’t be so simple.
As soon as Damien Sterling walked through the door, he was greeted by a sneeze.
"Achoo!"
"Mrs. Harris, has the house been thoroughly cleaned?" Damien questioned.
Emma Hart, carefully removing Damien’s coat, inadvertently came too close, prompting Damien to suddenly lean in and sniff around her neck.
Emma tensed up, asking warily, "What are you doing?"
"What do you think? What else could be done in the living room?" Damien replied with a look of disdain.
Emma caught his look of resignation. He was exasperated, but so was she. If it weren’t for his occasional outbursts of desire, would she have such a reflexive reaction to his proximity?
"Didn’t you take a shower?"
Emma asked coolly as she continued her task, "I wouldn’t dare disregard a directive from Mr. Sterling himself."
Emma was genuinely impressed by Damien’s sense of smell; their home didn’t need a dog with him around. His nose was more sensitive than a dog’s. Despite the multiple rounds of shower gel, Damien could still detect a faint scent on her.
Damien, sneezing repeatedly, instructed, "Mrs. Harris, make sure to bathe Bailey tomorrow."
Emma was irritated. Couldn’t her shower and Bailey’s be mentioned separately? She liked dogs, but she was still a human being, not to be constantly compared to one.
The next day, Damien’s sneezing began early in the morning, accompanying the sunrise with his clear, loud sneezes.
"Do you have a cold?" Emma asked quietly.
Ignoring her, Damien retorted, "Have you ever seen someone who sneezes from a cold but only sneezes?"
Emma nodded, acknowledging his point.
She was aware that some people are naturally allergic to dog hair and scent. Could Damien be one of them?
Yet, without Damien mentioning anything, Emma thought it best to keep silent. If she brought it up, Damien might not let her keep the dog, which would be a loss.
Seeing the situation, Emma closed her mouth and quietly left Damien, heading into the bathroom.
Outside the door, Damien Sterling’s sneezes continued one after another.
Emma Hart could only hope that these sneezes weren’t triggered by Bailey.
Damien left the villa.
In the afternoon, Mrs. Harris was busy cleaning the rooms, and Emma joined in to help.
Mrs. Harris hurriedly took the cleaning tools from her, "Miss Emma, you shouldn’t be doing these tasks."
"It’s okay, Mrs. Harris. I need to move around, and the doctor also advised me to stay active. Let me help you clean."
"That won’t do. If anything were to happen to you or the baby, who is the future of the Sterling family, I could never forgive myself. Miss Emma, please sit down. If you need anything, just ask me. You can sit here and supervise, and if there’s anything that’s not to your liking, please tell me."
Mrs. Harris carefully helped Emma to sit down.
"Alright, Mrs. Harris." Emma sat down and politely directed Mrs. Harris, who was already accustomed to her work.
However, remembering how Damien started sneezing upon his return, Emma thought it best to have Mrs. Harris clean more thoroughly to completely eradicate any scents, given Damien’s sensitive nose.
By the end of the afternoon, the villa was sparkling clean, with the floors polished to the point of reflecting one’s image.
"Mrs. Harris, you don’t smell anything in the room now, do you?"
Mrs. Harris nodded, "I don’t think there’s any smell now."
Emma nodded in satisfaction; that was good to hear.
However, it seemed their efforts were in vain.
Upon Damien’s return, the sneezes followed him like a shadow the moment he stepped through the door.
Seeing the secretary still at the door, Emma approached to inquire, "Does Mr. Sterling also sneeze at the office?"
The secretary shook his head, "The boss seems to only start sneezing when he gets home."
Hearing the secretary’s words, Emma felt a sense of defeat. She had hoped the afternoon’s cleaning would alleviate Damien’s reactions, but it seemed to have no effect at all.
Looking at Bailey bouncing around in the garden, Emma’s face was filled with worry...
