Chapter 77: The Wedding Approaches
When Emma Hart awoke, Damien Sterling was already gone from her side.
Venturing out of her room, she happened upon Mrs. Harris carrying a tray with milk upstairs.
"Miss Emma, you’re up? The master has arranged for a doctor to check on you shortly."
Another check-up? It seemed like any minor incident prompted Damien Sterling to call for a medical examination.
"I’m perfectly fine."
Mrs. Harris simply pursed her lips and looked down, knowing well that such matters were beyond her control.
Emma said no more on the subject.
"Where is he?"
Mrs. Harris gestured towards the staircase.
Emma approached and saw a man marking something on a calendar, eventually circling a date and presenting it to Damien Sterling.
Turning around, Emma inquired, "What’s this about?"
Mrs. Harris explained, "It seems they are deciding on a date for your grand wedding with the master. You know, for a family like the Sterlings, selecting an auspicious date for such events is taken quite seriously."
Emma nodded slightly; she understood this marriage was meant to benefit both the Sterling Group and Damien Sterling personally.
After all, it was a transaction.
As Emma turned back towards her room, she didn’t see Damien not even glance at the calendar handed to him by the master, merely stating, "Let’s settle on that."
Damien then stood up to have the master escorted out.
"Is she up?"
Mrs. Harris shook her head, then nodded, "Miss Emma just woke up and has gone back to her room."
Glancing at his watch, assuming she must have awoken by now, Damien made his way towards the room.
Inside, Emma heard Damien’s footsteps and dove under the covers, pulling them over her head as if hiding inside could somehow make everything else go away, much like an ostrich believing it’s safe just because it can’t see.
"Get up," his voice cut straight through to Emma, noticing her lack of response, Damien continued, "I know you’re not asleep."
Emma emerged from under the covers, dropping the act, "What is it?"
She hadn’t been asleep, and it seemed there was no escaping this.
"The wedding is next Sunday. Review everything needed for the wedding again; I don’t want any mistakes."
Next Sunday? Just seven days away? Such suddenness.
Yet, on second thought, what difference did today, tomorrow, or in ten days make?
This day was bound to come, wasn’t it?
"If you’ve decided, then that’s fine," Emma replied nonchalantly, indifferent to the details.
"Isn’t this your wedding too?"
Emma didn’t answer. Any response would only ignite further conflict between them.
Damien Sterling had already made his way to the wardrobe, pulling out two outfits: one a daffodil-yellow dress and the other a lake-blue suit.
After a moment’s comparison, he handed Emma Hart the yellow dress, stating, "Wear this one," before taking a seat on the sofa.
Had he gone deaf? She had just told him he could decide. Was there an issue with his comprehension?
"What are you waiting for?" Damien stretched his legs, leaning back as he squinted at Emma with a look both hazy and resolute, signaling that her preferences had no weight in his decision.
Emma felt resigned.
"How can I change with you here?" She remembered the events of the previous night, wondering if his current good mood was the calm before a storm.
"I’ll help you change," Damien teased, a provocative smile crossing his lips.
"I’ll do it myself." Having been by his side for so long, Emma was nearly familiar with all his tactics.
If she continued the conversation, he might just take action.
Standing up, Emma began to slowly unbutton her pajama top.
Even without looking, she was aware of the intense gaze tracing every inch of her skin behind her.
Her skin was soft and fair, her delicate fingers brushing against her back...
Damien’s gaze lingered on every bit of Emma’s skin.
Unlike some, whose skin tone varied across different parts of their body, Emma’s complexion was uniformly pale everywhere.
Emma’s hands, tense, hesitated on her back.
Unable to resist, she glanced back and, as expected, met Damien’s gaze directly.
Feeling indifferent now, she boldly prepared to remove her closer garment.
Suddenly, footsteps startled her.
With a "bang"... the sound came from the door. Emma turned around to find Damien had left.
Had he changed his ways? Emma walked over and locked the door.
Outside the room, Damien Sterling let out a deep breath, finding Emma Hart irresistible at all times, a freshness no other woman had ever maintained for him.
What astonished Damien Sterling even more was his own endurance, his willingness to control his desires for a woman.
After changing, Emma Hart emerged from the room to find the driver already waiting at the door.
Once she got into the car, Damien gestured, and the vehicle shot off like an arrow released from its bow.
Naturally, Damien Sterling’s wedding planning was entrusted to the top-tier wedding team, and astonishingly, the luxurious shop was devoid of any other customers for the day.
"Mr. Sterling, to honor your wedding, our shop will not entertain any other customers today, dedicating our full attention to serving you," the manager said respectfully, aiming to highlight the supreme treatment for Damien Sterling.
Such treatment was nothing new to Damien; it was something he encountered frequently and didn’t find particularly special, merely nodding in acknowledgment as if it were the least to expect.
"Alright," Damien glanced at his watch, "One hour to go over everything."
The staff exchanged looks, but none dared to speak out.
They were well aware of Damien Sterling’s stringent demands and had prepared accordingly. "Yes, Mr. Sterling."
Emma Hart showed little interest in these arrangements.
The items, needless to say, were of the highest quality, and for Damien Sterling’s wedding, no one dared to take any chances.
Emma Hart responded nonchalantly, barely paying attention.
However, as the wedding process was explained, a piece of information caught Emma Hart’s attention.
"Mr. Sterling, Miss Emma, in light of the esteemed stature of the Sterling Group, we have planned for Mr. Sterling Senior to deliver a speech on the occasion."
"During this time, the bride will remain in her room. After Mr. Sterling Senior concludes his address, Mr. Sterling will proceed towards the bride, who will be awaiting him beneath the floral archway."
"Subsequently, escorted by a procession of flower children, the bride and groom will join hands and traverse past the assembled guests. Under the gaze of all in attendance, they will cross the Bridge of Happiness, symbolizing..."
Emma Hart couldn’t care less to listen further, her mind racing with a sudden thought.
With so many people guarding her on regular days, that day might be when everyone’s guard was at its lowest, presenting Emma Hart with the perfect opportunity.
