Chapter 71: Is He Doing Alright?
"What massage?" Emma asked.
"Mr. Sterling has instructed us to offer you a relaxing body massage to prevent soreness from exercise. We’ll also conduct a full-body check-up to tailor a wellness plan specifically for you."
Surrounded by a star-like entourage, Emma was quickly enveloped in various VIP-level services before she could react.
This level of luxury, typical of Damien Sterling’s capitalist class, was not what Emma preferred.
If pregnancy required such arrangements as Damien had made, then many women would struggle to conceive under such standards.
After the massage session the previous night, Mrs. Harris brought Emma a glass of juice, saying, "Miss Emma, Mr. Sterling has instructed that if you need any service at all, they can come to your door."
"But I really don’t need it..." Emma sighed, turning her head away. She truly couldn’t bear such supreme services.
When they left, Emma went upstairs alone, unlocked her door, and walked to the bedside drawer to take out her phone.
Sitting on the edge of the bed, her fingers idly swiped across the screen, which displayed one name: Ethan Turner.
Emma Hart hesitated as her finger hovered over the send button of a drafted text message.
Eventually, she decided against sending it, turning off her phone and tossing it aside.
She was certain Damien Sterling had some sort of surveillance on her phone.
His possessiveness and controlling nature meant that if he discovered she was still thinking about Ethan Turner, neither she nor Ethan would be spared his wrath.
In the empty room, only the white curtains fluttered in the breeze, drawing Emma’s gaze to the computer sitting in the corner of the desk.
She walked over and turned on the computer, only to find it wasn’t connected to the internet.
Emma left the room for the kitchen to get a glass of water, where she saw Mrs. Harris busily working.
Tentatively, she asked, "Mrs. Harris, is there no internet in this room?"
Mrs. Harris didn’t find the question unusual, acknowledging that it was normal for young people to want internet access.
"Mr. Sterling has opted not to install internet here for caution. We usually just make phone calls if there’s anything urgent."
"Doesn’t he use the internet?" Emma couldn’t help but wonder if Damien was that old-fashioned.
Mrs. Harris pondered for a moment. "I think Mr. Sterling has his ways?"
"Hm?"
"There’s a device."
"A portable Wi-Fi, maybe?" Emma guessed.
Mrs. Harris shook her head. "I’m not sure."
Shocked by the lack of internet, Emma felt like she was in a castle rather than a home.
With all the security around, what was there to fear? Surely, important documents weren’t stored here? What secrets could be so guarded?
However, she doubted Damien would always carry such a device on him. With a new resolve, Emma started searching the room, checking drawers, desks, even the closet, but found nothing.
She moved to the living room in her search, where Mrs. Harris approached, asking, "Miss Emma, what are you looking for?"
"Oh, it’s nothing," Emma replied with an awkward smile, her search ultimately fruitless.
She just wanted to know, was he doing alright?
Emma felt her freedom slipping away again, likely not to be so easily regained from Damien Sterling this time.
Exhausted, she lay on the bed, overwhelmed by a profound sense of oppression, her gaze vacant and spiritless, unable to muster interest in anything.
It must have been her past life’s misdeeds that condemned her to this repayment in her current life.
Damien Sterling seemed like a divine punishment sent her way.
Mrs. Harris gently knocked and entered the room, her concern mounting as she saw Emma Hart in a twisted posture on the bed, pressing down on her abdomen.
She quickly helped Emma to sit up properly, urging, "Miss Emma, you can’t stay like this, please sit up properly."
"It’s okay," Emma responded indifferently, confident in the resilience of her unborn child.
"If you maintain such a mood every day, it won’t be good for the baby inside. Mr. Sterling wouldn’t be pleased to see this..."
Mrs. Harris sighed, having witnessed the ongoing tension between Emma Hart and Damien Sterling, almost like eternal adversaries, constantly on edge around each other.
"I understand," Emma said as she adjusted her position to sit more comfortably, then smiled at Mrs. Harris, expressing her gratitude with a "Thank you."
Emma’s daily struggles deeply saddened Mrs. Harris, reminding her of her own daughter.
Sitting beside Emma, she took her hand, offering counsel, "My dear, I really want to persuade you again."
Emma interrupted before Mrs. Harris could continue, "Mrs. Harris, I know what you’re going to say." It was all about accepting Damien Sterling’s ’generosity.’ But if that were easy, she wouldn’t be Emma Hart.
"Emma, let me finish. I’ve never seen Mr. Sterling bring anyone here before. You’re the first," Mrs. Harris persisted.
But surely, she wouldn’t be the last. Perhaps Damien had too many villas to count, and Mrs. Harris only worked at this one; who could know about the rest?
How patient could someone as wealthy as him truly be? To Emma, Damien wasn’t different from other men in that regard.
"Miss Emma, perhaps you should try to accept it."
Emma resisted, turning Mrs. Harris’s hand under hers and gripping it tightly. She knew Mrs. Harris meant well, but Emma was not ready to compromise.
"Miss Emma, you’re about to be married. Why resist it so?"
Hearing Mrs. Harris mention marriage, Emma Hart suddenly realized the wedding date Damien Sterling had set was fast approaching.
If she delayed any further, her pregnancy would be more evident, but marriage seemed far from a simple affair in her mind.
She recalled as a child, draping white veils over her head, dreaming of a blissful future. Yet, the prospect of actually getting married...
"Mrs. Harris, marriage holds no meaning for me," Emma confessed.
"Miss Emma, perhaps taking a step towards doing something that makes Mr. Sterling happy, engaging in activities he enjoys, might change the current dynamics between you two," Mrs. Harris suggested.
Emma wondered about the nature of Mrs. Harris’s own husband, the principles her upbringing and era had instilled in her, principles Emma was reluctant to accept.
It seemed Mrs. Harris was advising her to appease Damien Sterling.
Yet, she steadfastly refused.
