Chapter 480: The Best Ending
"Since you young people are so determined, there’s not much more I can say. Honestly, I’ve known for some time that you can’t let go of Emma Hart. You asked me what I don’t like about her, and I’ll be straight with you—she’s kind, dutiful, and there’s nothing wrong with her at all," Mr. Sterling Senior said as he slowly walked over to the window.
Damien Sterling’s frown finally eased, but he still looked at the old man with confusion. "Then why haven’t you been willing to accept her?"
"I’ve told you before, she doesn’t contribute to our family’s business. I’ve always wanted you to be with Riley Turner because she could help our family thrive, but as of yesterday, my thoughts have changed."
"If you’ve held onto this for so long, why did you suddenly change your mind?" Damien Sterling asked, puzzled, as he reached out to support the old man and guided him to sit down.
"You probably got upset hearing what I said last night, didn’t you? At the hospital, you kept calling out Emma Hart’s name, even though you were sweating and your brow was furrowed. Yet, you still called out for her. How deep must your feelings for her be for you to do that? Riley Turner didn’t see it, but by then, I had already made my decision. I won’t interfere in your love life anymore," Mr. Sterling Senior said, as if recounting a long, old story.
There was one crucial detail he left unsaid.
Last night, when he saw Damien Sterling collapse like that, he caught a faint scent of blood, and after coughing a few times, he realized he was coughing up blood. His long-standing ailment had finally caught up with him—it might be lung cancer.
He understood that life is short, and you never know whether tomorrow or an unexpected event will come first. Given that, why not live the way you want? Since his grandson loves Emma Hart, he should let them be together. As someone who has one foot in the grave, what more is there to control?
Damien Sterling looked at the old man with a touch of emotion. He hadn’t expected things to change so quickly, and in that instant, he felt an overwhelming sense of relief—finally, he wouldn’t have to be stuck in the middle anymore.
"She’s a woman out there all alone; you should bring her over soon," Mr. Sterling Senior urged.
Damien Sterling nodded excitedly. "I understand, Grandpa."
"How about this?" Mr. Sterling Senior suggested. "You and she should go to Country A in a few days, spend a few months there with the children, and just relax. Don’t worry about the company; I’ll take care of everything here."
Damien Sterling was overwhelmed by the sudden generosity—it felt almost too good to be true.
He happily went to find Emma Hart.
"What did you say? Grandpa is really willing to accept me?" Emma Hart asked, suddenly dropping the spoon in her hand as she looked at Damien Sterling with tear-filled eyes.
Damien Sterling held her tightly in his arms. "Grandpa even suggested we go to Country A to reunite with the children and come back after a few months. Are you happy, Emma?"
Emma Hart felt like she was dreaming. The man in front of her was so gentle, and the old man who had never liked her suddenly accepted her. Happiness had come so swiftly and unexpectedly that she wasn’t prepared for it.
"I’m so happy, I never thought this day would come... I never imagined..." Emma Hart couldn’t help but cry, letting all the grievances and unhappiness of the past days flow out in tears.
What remained was happiness, something truly precious—love.
"What about Riley Turner? She..." Emma Hart hesitated, unsure how to ask.
Damien Sterling gently stroked her hair. "Don’t worry, I made it clear to her that I’m not interested. Riley Turner is too proud to ever come back to me."
He thought back to how he had spoken to Riley Turner that morning and recalled her reaction. He was certain there would be no more entanglements between them; he had pushed Riley Turner to the brink.
At that moment, Riley Turner was sobbing uncontrollably in Max’s arms. Max didn’t know the details of what had happened, but seeing her so heartbroken left him feeling deeply troubled. He could only stay silently by her side.
The long-waiting migratory bird had finally found a place to rest.
Max understood that the woman before him, having set aside her pride to cry in his arms, meant that he now had the responsibility and duty to care for her.
He had never felt happier; after all this time, she had finally chosen him, choosing love and stability.
Damien Sterling, at last, could walk hand in hand with Emma Hart through their family fields. They couldn’t help but embrace and kiss, feeling the purest love between them—a love that seemed as enduring as the sky itself.
Mr. Sterling Senior was coughing persistently, and the driver beside him could hardly bear to see it anymore. He suggested informing Damien Sterling about the situation.
But the old man firmly shook his head. "I’ve made many mistakes in my life, and it’s only now, with little time left, that I understand how unimportant most things truly are. The things that really matter are often simple, but how many people can grasp them?"
The driver listened with a heavy heart but was helpless. Yes, who would willingly embrace the simple things?
Perhaps someone as ordinary as Emma Hart had managed to live so contentedly because she held onto those simple things.
"Emma," Damien Sterling said as he embraced her from behind, whispering her name in her ear.
"Hmm?" Emma Hart replied.
In a soft, tender voice, Damien Sterling asked, "What gave you the strength to hold onto our love? When I lost my memory, did you plan to go to Country A and leave me behind for good?"
The memories of those difficult days flashed through Emma Hart’s mind. It would be a lie to say they weren’t painful, and it would also be a lie to say she had never thought of giving up. After all, she had almost left, hadn’t she?
"I did think about leaving you because I had no other choice. Our child was in a foreign country, and I had already lost you—I couldn’t bear to lose our child too. But now, I truly believe it was fate that brought us together," Emma Hart answered with a smile.
Damien Sterling gently kissed the corner of her lips. "It wasn’t fate; it was our wish. Our strong wish was heard by the heavens. They must have heard me calling your name in the middle of the night and brought you back to me."
Emma Hart’s eyes lit up as she quickly turned around, surprise and delight on her face. "Calling my name in the middle of the night? When? Who told you that? How would you know if you were calling my name?"
Damien Sterling was momentarily caught off guard, but then he took off running like the wind.
"Who told you?"
"Grandpa!" Damien Sterling shouted back as he ran, glancing over his shoulder.
In the sunlight, Emma Hart caught up to Damien Sterling, and the two of them happily nestled together...
