Chapter 462: Truly Lost His Memory
Although Riley Turner felt guilty deep down, looking at Damien Sterling’s handsome face, her guilt and self-reproach were somewhat eased. Damien Sterling was always meant to be hers; after all, the elder Mr. Sterling also approved of her.
Riley took Damien Sterling’s hand and began massaging his fingers, mimicking the way she had seen Emma Hart do it before, thinking it might make him feel more comfortable. After all, even in a coma, the nervous system can still respond. She spent the whole night repeatedly massaging Damien, hoping he would wake up by morning.
Even though Riley could easily find many good men given her own qualities, she still believed Damien Sterling was the most suitable for her.
Mr. Sterling Senior woke up once during the night. He looked through the glass and saw Riley carefully tending to Damien, smiling with relief. His efforts to bring them together hadn’t been in vain.
Riley didn’t know when she had fallen asleep, but when she woke up, it was already daylight. She pulled out her phone to check the time—it was almost noon. Still, there was no response from Damien Sterling.
Mr. Sterling Senior, now awake, approached the bed and looked at Damien, frowning. "Riley, has Damien not woken up at all?"
Riley looked at Mr. Sterling Senior apologetically. "Grandpa, I’m sorry, I fell asleep accidentally. But he hasn’t woken up... Damien, he won’t..." Riley covered her mouth, unable to finish the sentence.
Shaking her head, tears welled up in Riley’s eyes. "No, it can’t be. There’s such a big company that needs him. How could he just lie here and do nothing?"
Compared to Riley’s anxiety, Mr. Sterling Senior remained more composed. "Don’t worry. Let’s wait a little longer. If he still doesn’t wake up, we’ll call the doctor to check on him."
Mr. Sterling Senior sat down in a chair and closed his eyes. No one knew how much he cherished his grandson, so if Damien didn’t wake up, it would be an even greater blow to him.
Riley looked at Damien Sterling lying quietly on the bed, and a surge of overwhelming grievance and self-blame welled up in her heart. If it weren’t for the photos she had taken that upset him, he wouldn’t have rushed to leave the hospital.
But this was something she would never tell Mr. Sterling Senior. She couldn’t bear to think about the consequences. Now, all she could do was sit there and continue waiting, silently praying that Damien would wake up soon.
Another hour passed, and there was still no reaction from Damien Sterling on the bed. His breathing was steady, just like someone peacefully sleeping. Riley grew more anxious but forced herself to stay calm. If she lost her composure, what would happen to Mr. Sterling Senior? He had already had a heart attack yesterday and had to be resuscitated. He couldn’t handle another shock like that.
Mr. Sterling Senior opened his eyes, as if he had mentally prepared himself. "Riley, go get the doctor to check on him. It’s going to be okay."
Hearing Mr. Sterling Senior’s reassurance, Riley nodded heavily and walked out with heavy steps. The sooner they faced the situation, the better.
The doctor arrived quickly with Riley, and after a brief examination, he looked at Mr. Sterling Senior and Riley Turner, and said, "The patient’s vital signs are normal. If he doesn’t wake up, it means he’s in a vegetative state. His brain’s nerve cells have died."
Even though Mr. Sterling Senior had mentally prepared himself, hearing this news still made him feel faint. His grandson had ended up like this—just yesterday, he had been fine.
Riley could see that Mr. Sterling Senior suddenly seemed to age by decades. Helplessly, he looked up at Riley and asked, "Do you think it’s because of what happened yesterday? Is Damien mad at me, and that’s why he won’t wake up?"
Riley didn’t know how to respond; she truly didn’t know how to comfort Mr. Sterling Senior in this situation. No matter what she said, it was a huge blow to him.
Riley opened her mouth but couldn’t find the words. The doctor shook his head and left, understanding that family matters needed to be resolved by the family. His job was to save lives, not bring people back from the dead.
Mr. Sterling Senior continued to speak to himself, "Damien, please wake up. Don’t be mad at Grandpa. You liked that woman, so I brought her back for you. But you can’t just keep lying here."
There was no response from Damien Sterling on the bed. Just as Mr. Sterling Senior was about to leave, Riley Turner, her face streaked with tears, grabbed his arm. "Grandpa, Damien isn’t waking up. Please, don’t..."
Before she could finish, Mr. Sterling Senior shook her off, glaring at her with anger. "Stop talking nonsense! If I bring that woman back, he’ll wake up. He’s just mad at me."
In their struggle, neither noticed Damien Sterling’s fingers twitch. Suddenly, Damien began to cough, feeling like he had been in a long, endless dream, but he couldn’t remember anything.
Riley immediately turned around and saw Damien Sterling staring at the ceiling with his eyes open. When he saw her face, he was startled. "Who are you? Where am I?"
Riley was momentarily at a loss for words, her heartbeat slowing—had he really lost his memory?
Mr. Sterling Senior quickly walked over. "You’re the grandson of the Sterling family, the heir to the Sterling Group. This is your fiancée, Riley Turner. You two grew up together."
Riley was surprised by the old man’s quick thinking and ability to adapt. She swiftly composed herself, saying, "The doctor said you might never wake up again. You really scared me."
Damien Sterling looked at Riley and the old man in front of him with confusion. They both felt incredibly unfamiliar to him, and he wasn’t sure if he should believe what they were saying. He looked down and noticed a ring on his finger.
Mr. Sterling Senior added, "You’re married. The ring on your finger is your wedding band. You were in a car accident while on your honeymoon. You were driving, so you were more seriously injured."
Seeing Mr. Sterling Senior’s serious expression, Damien began to feel less suspicious and nodded, though he noticed that Riley wasn’t wearing a ring. There was still a hint of doubt in his eyes.
Mr. Sterling Senior, without showing any emotion, carefully observed everything and continued his lie with a straight face, "Riley took off her ring because she’s been taking care of you and didn’t want to accidentally scratch you. I asked her to remove it."
Damien looked around at his surroundings, which indeed appeared to be a hospital. This made him think their story might be true. But why did these two people still seem so unfamiliar? Was it really because of his memory loss?
Damien decided to push aside his doubts. Since he was in a hospital, it was unlikely they could fabricate such an elaborate story to deceive him, especially with so many people involved.
