Chapter 45: I Don’t Understand What You’re Saying

Damien sneered, his gaze filled with disdain and mockery.

Emma couldn’t stand his attitude – acting as if she had seduced him after he had taken advantage of her. His arrogance was nauseating.

"Damien Sterling, have some respect for yourself," she retorted defiantly, her words dripping with sarcasm.

Such frivolity, hardly befitting a president.

The bottle of special moisturizer for pregnant women rested on the bedside table.

Emma Hart glanced at Damien Sterling nearby, then with an exaggerated motion, she picked up the bottle and applied some of it to her skin before lying down.

The events of that day made Emma cautious, compelling her to stick to her usual routine, wandering from the garden to the kitchen.

During her afternoon nap, Emma felt as if someone was moving around outside, but she dismissed it, thinking she was just groggy.

In the evening, Damien returned home.

The dinner table was shrouded in its usual silence, the hardest part of the day for Emma.

She used sleep as an excuse in the morning and waited for Damien to leave for work before she went downstairs.

She preferred Mrs. Harris’s company to Damien’s; every moment with him felt like an ordeal.

Today, Damien seemed in a good mood, unexpectedly starting to inquire about Emma’s day.

"What did you do today?"

Emma continued to eat with her fork., unwilling to halt her actions just because Damien usually was cold and harsh.

"Not much, just bored, walking back and forth in the living room."

"And what else? What did you eat?" Damien’s gaze was fixed intensely on Emma.

His staring made Emma increasingly uncomfortable, as if his eyes could see right through her.

"I... had milk, bread, and an egg for breakfast. Mrs. Harris cooked for me before noon, and then the afternoon passed until now, waiting for you to come back. That’s all I had."

Emma said nervously, fearing any slip-up might give her away.

"Also, nuts and juice." Damien Sterling’s cold eyes shifted, not lingering on Emma Hart any longer as he continued to eat naturally.

Emma suddenly felt a twinge of nervousness, but to avoid giving herself away, she controlled her reaction.

Glancing at Mrs. Harris, she wondered if Damien had questioned her earlier. Perhaps there was nothing to fear.

He must not have discovered anything.

"Oh, right, I had those too. They were so small, I forgot to mention them."

Emma didn’t realize that her behavior was somewhat out of character at that moment.

Normally, she wouldn’t bother explaining such details to Damien.

Damien continued his meal, his demeanor like the surface of a calm lake, utterly unruffled.

In the room, Emma didn’t head upstairs until ten o’clock, guessing that was Damien’s limit.

After her bath, as Emma was drying her damp hair by the bedside, she suddenly felt a chill on her back – the sensation of fingers gliding over her skin.

Her entire body tensed up, and she instinctively shrank away in an attempt to escape.

But her shoulder was firmly grasped by Damien, easily capturing her between his hands.

His grip on her shoulder forced her closer to him.

Damien leaned in, burying his face in the nape of her neck, inhaling deeply.

Though his breath was warm, it sent a cold shiver down Emma’s spine.

His husky voice whispered in her ear, "Your skin has healed nicely, not a single blemish left."

Terrified, Emma Hart instinctively curled up, but Damien Sterling’s firm grip on her shoulder tightened mercilessly.

His voice, chilling as if from the depths of hell, echoed again, "What are you afraid of?"

"I’m not..." she stammered.

The coldness was biting.

Emma wasn’t sure if it was the water droplets in her hair or the air conditioning, but she felt as if she was being immersed in icy water, with the man behind her pushing her towards an abyss.

Fear permeated the air.

"Are you not?" Damien’s index finger traced Emma’s unadorned face, captivated by her innocent appearance.

Yet, whether this innocence concealed a venomous heart, Damien couldn’t tell.

His fingers slowly brushed across Emma’s face – a prolonged torment for her.

She wished time would hasten, but Damien’s other hand gripped her tighter, making escape impossible.

"Emma Hart, you cover up well," Damien whispered hotly near her ear.

She instinctively tried to pull away. "I don’t know what you’re talking about."

"You don’t know?"

His hand suddenly rested on her abdomen. "This child, you have no say over it. Your life and death are in my hands, let alone his!"

Damien’s eyes darkened, his smirk devilishly penetrating.

"I don’t know what you’re talking about!" Emma insisted, raising her voice as if to fortify herself.

Abruptly, Damien spun her around to face him.

His intense gaze, the visible veins on his face, all signaled to Emma that this man was capable of tearing into his prey like a wild beast.

"Thinking of getting rid of my child, huh?" His pupils dilated with dangerous intent.

Despite trembling in fear at his intimidating aura, Emma made a last desperate retort, "You have no proof, don’t make baseless accusations!"

In an instant, Damien’s rage turned into a cold, mocking smile. "Proof? Alright, I’ll give you proof!"

All night long, Emma Hart slept fitfully, trembling with anxiety.

Was it possible that the man had no evidence and was merely bluffing to scare her?

She hardly slept well, finally drifting off as dawn faintly broke, unaware of Damien Sterling’s departure.

It wasn’t until 10 a.m. that Emma got out of bed.

Mrs. Harris had prepared breakfast, and just as Emma finished eating, the front door rang.

Both were puzzled, wondering who could be returning.

To Emma’s surprise, Damien Sterling entered the house, making her question if she was dreaming.

Hadn’t he just left?

Without a word, Damien grabbed Emma’s hand at the dining table and dragged her to the living room.

Emma struggled against his grip, shouting, "Let go of me!"

Damien unceremoniously dropped her onto the sofa and turned on the TV with a remote. "You wanted proof, didn’t you?"
