Chapter 43: Hope Reborn
Chapter 43: Hope Reborn
During dinner, Emma’s movements slowed, catching Damien’s attention. He knew this meant she probably had something to say.
Sure enough, Emma spoke up after a while, her voice faint, "I’ve been feeling really cooped up at home lately. Could I go out again, like when we went to the flower market? They can follow me, so you don’t have to worry..."
"Okay," Damien agreed without a second thought.
Emma was stunned, unable to believe how easily he consented. She had braced herself for a debate if he refused.
Damien’s acquiescence lifted Emma’s spirits the next morning.
After breakfast, she excitedly called Mrs. Harris to leave the house.
"Why are you so excited, Miss Emma?"
"It’s just that I’ve been stuck inside for so long, I feel like a little rabbit about to sprint across fields of hope," Emma said with a laugh, knowing well the real reason behind her joy.
Halfway through their journey, Emma Hart spotted a pharmacy.
A flicker of excitement crossed her face, quickly replaced by a calm demeanor.
Turning to Mrs. Harris, she said evenly, "By the way, Mrs. Harris, aren’t we running low on prenatal supplements?"
Mrs. Harris pondered for a moment. "I think we still have a few bottles left."
"No, one of the calcium supplements is almost out. I meant to tell you yesterday, but it slipped my mind in the rush," Emma interjected.
Mrs. Harris thought again, "I’m quite sure..."
"Oh, Mrs. Harris, you might have forgotten, but I’m certain since I take them myself."
Emma reminded her, although she had never actually swallowed those supplements, always managing to hide them under her tongue and then spit them out.
She was aware Mrs. Harris had stocked enough at home.
Following Emma out of the car, Mrs. Harris entered the pharmacy, recalling that her own medications were running low.
While Mrs. Harris was busy at the counter, Emma made her way to the gynecological section.
The special green plants in the garden were dwindling, and such botanical methods were too slow for her growing impatience.
If things continued this way, she would lose all control over her situation.
The quickest solution now seemed to be medication; after all, she didn’t have the freedom for surgical options.
Emma observed the two men in black stationed outside the pharmacy entrance, who paid her no attention.
Stealthily, she approached the pharmacist.
Lowering her voice, Emma asked, "Hello, do you have any medication for medical abortion?"
The pharmacist scrutinized Emma, not appearing to be the typical troubled young woman. Curiosity piqued, but without further query.
As the pharmacist was about to speak, Emma Hart gestured for him to lower his voice.
The pharmacist glanced at the counter, where such medications were not displayed openly. "Ok, wait here, I’ll find it for you," she said quietly.
Mrs. Harris, consulting with another pharmacist about her medication, glanced over at Emma to make sure everything was fine. "Miss Emma, have you found what you need?"
"Oh, Mrs. Harris, I’m all set."
Emma was praying for the pharmacist to hurry, her excitement barely containable.
She planned to secretly take the medication once home.
If she no longer carried Damien Sterling’s child, she would become worthless to him, and everything would return to how it was.
That box of medicine symbolized her rebirth.
Her hopes rested entirely on the pharmacist.
The pharmacist returned with a box in hand, and Emma’s heart raced, beating louder as she approached.
Emma’s eyes brimmed with joy.
Then, lifting her gaze, Emma saw a reflection in the counter’s mirror – a stern face, its dark eyes shimmering.
That unmistakable face, with its fierce aura, belonged to none other than Damien Sterling!
In that moment, Emma’s mind froze, her heart leaping into her throat.
As the pharmacist drew nearer, Emma dreaded Damien discovering the nature of her purchase.
But just then, the pharmacist began, "Miss, your a..."
"Antihistamines, I’ve changed my mind. I don’t want it anymore. I fear it might harm the baby," Emma hastily interjected, her trembling voice magnified with effort.
Emma Hart spun around, accidentally colliding with Damien Sterling.
She looked up, feigning composure, "You... what are you doing here?"
"Just passing by," Damien’s eyes flickered slightly as he glanced past the pharmacist and then fixed his gaze on Emma.
Such a coincidence – he had casually spotted his bodyguard from the side of the road and, inexplicably, decided to walk into the pharmacy.
"I... I’ve developed some rash on my back and wanted to buy Antihistamines, but I’m worried it might harm the baby."
Emma stammered nervously, her legs trembling slightly as she quickly walked towards the counter.
That afternoon, a secretary, dressed seductively in a short skirt and with a face full of exquisite makeup, entered the office.
With a soft, coquettish voice, she said to Damien, who was engrossed in documents, "Mr. President, the Australian moisturizer you requested has been air-shipped."
"Just leave it," Damien replied coldly, without even glancing up.
The secretary, standing before the large, expansive desk, hesitated, then left, seemingly regretting her carefully chosen attire that Damien hadn’t even acknowledged.
After spending the afternoon hunched over his desk, Damien’s shoulders felt stiff.
He stood up, stretching his neck, and then noticed the moisturizer on his desk.
That morning’s encounter with Emma seeking Antihistamines, and by afternoon, he had already arranged for a special moisturizer for pregnant women to be flown in.
Damien’s expression darkened slightly as he put on his coat, the timing perfect; his driver was already waiting outside the office.
"Where to, Mr. President?" the driver, in crisp attire and white gloves, asked respectfully as he bowed.
"Back to the villa."
"Yes, sir," the driver promptly followed Damien.
The two men headed to the private elevator, descending to the underground parking garage.
The company’s underground parking was divided into two sections: one for the employees and the other entirely dedicated to Damien Sterling’s private collection.
His personal garage housed a lineup of top-tier luxury cars from around the world.
