Chapter 419: The Old Man’s True Identity
The May crabapple blossoms were in full bloom, signaling the height of early summer. Yet Emma Hart could only sit idly in the living room of her home, staring into space. The children and Damien Sterling had left early in the morning, leaving her feeling like an empty nester.
Bored and with nothing to do, Emma Hart started trying to help Mrs. Harris with the housework.
"Mrs. Harris, let me help you sweep the floor!" Emma Hart said, moving forward to take the broom from Mrs. Harris. This startled the single mother.
"That won’t do, dear. You can’t be doing this. It’s fine when you help with cooking, but if this continues, Mr. Sterling might just fire me," Mrs. Harris replied, dodging Emma’s attempt. She was the sole breadwinner for her family, with her daughter just graduating and yet to find a job.
At Sterling Group, Damien Sterling was busy catching up on work with Assistant Lee.
"Mr. Sterling, is Mrs. Sterling not coming in today?" Assistant Lee asked teasingly. Ever since the president’s wife appeared in his boss’s life, the cold-faced CEO had softened quite a bit. But now with Emma Hart suddenly absent, Damien Sterling was becoming more demanding.
Damien Sterling glanced at Assistant Lee, who quickly looked down. "She’s not coming in today," Damien responded after a moment’s thought. They had just returned from France, and she needed a few days to rest. Work was something she could dabble in, but it wasn’t meant for Damien Sterling’s woman.
"By the way, Mr. Sterling, Mr. Turner from Turner Group, who has been abroad on business, returned to the country last night. He called to arrange a meeting with you," Assistant Lee reported.
"Oh?" Damien Sterling was surprised. The Turner Group mainly managed real estate projects in Europe. Mr. Turner was a heavyweight in the business world and a close friend of Mr. Sterling Senior. Damien had never met him, as he preferred staying abroad. "It’s an honor that Mr. Turner wants to meet. Arrange a time with his office," Damien said.
Assistant Lee left the office after agreeing.
A tall secretary brought Damien Sterling a cup of coffee. He sipped it while watching the bustling city below from the floor-to-ceiling windows, a reminder of the perpetual rush hour. He couldn’t help but think of the old man he met on the plane. That old man, with his small instrument, seemed to live a carefree, unburdened life. Damien hoped he could live that way in his old age.
About ten minutes before his meeting with Mr. Turner, a sudden loud phone ring disrupted his thoughts. The call was from an unknown number.
"Hello, is this Damien Sterling, CEO of Sterling Group?" The voice on the other end was both warm and amiable.
"Yes, this is he. Who’s calling?" Damien frowned slightly, finding the voice familiar yet weathered.
"Mr. Sterling, you don’t recognize my voice? It’s me, the old man who borrowed money from you last night!" the old man laughed heartily on the other end.
"So, it’s you, Grandpa. How can I help you?" Damien’s tone softened slightly.
"I wanted to ask if you have time today. This old man wants to return the money," the old man said. Just then, there was a knock on Damien Sterling’s office door. His tall secretary entered and quietly informed him that Mr. Turner had arrived downstairs. Damien nodded and then spoke into the phone, "Grandpa, there’s no need to return the money."
To Damien, the amount was insignificant. "That won’t do. We had an agreement. A gentleman’s word is his bond, and a thousand dollars is no small sum," the old man insisted.
"Alright then, Grandpa. Whatever is convenient for you, we’ll do it that way," Damien conceded, knowing he couldn’t win this argument.
"Ha! Young man, I’m right in front of you," the old man said, pushing open Damien Sterling’s office door while still on the phone, dressed in sportswear and followed by a man and a woman. Damien was stunned and quickly stood up. Wasn’t Mr. Turner, the CEO of Turner Group, supposed to be coming? Could this old man be...?
"Grandpa, who are you?" Damien asked, bewildered.
"Here, let me return the thousand dollars first. And remember to thank Emma for me!" The old man said, handing over the cash.
"Grandpa, it was no trouble at all," Damien replied.
The old man waved his hand dismissively. "No trouble at all. Look at me, I love exercising."
"By the way, I haven’t properly introduced myself. I’m Mr. Turner, from Turner Group. These are my assistants," Mr. Turner said, introducing the man and woman behind him.
The man was dressed similarly to Assistant Lee, likely holding a similar position, while the woman wore a floral dress, her dark hair cascading over her shoulders. She carried several folders and appeared to be an intern.
Damien nodded slightly at them. "Mr. Turner, I apologize for the oversight. Please, have a seat," Damien said, quickly inviting them to the sofa.
The tall secretary promptly brought three glasses of water.
"No need to be so formal. I’m here to see your grandpa and check on how you’re managing the company," Mr. Turner said, clearly excited.
"It’s an honor to have you here," Damien replied respectfully.
"Alright, no need to be so formal. We’re not strangers. I took a little tour of your company earlier. You don’t mind, do you? You’re doing a great job, young man!" Mr. Turner said, raising his thumb in approval.
Damien humbly nodded in thanks.
"By the way, can you arrange for us to have a meal together sometime? It’ll be a chance for us to catch up and celebrate," the old man suggested with a smile.
"Sure, no problem," Damien replied obediently. In the presence of such seniors, he quickly transformed from a tiger to a lamb.
"And don’t forget to bring Emma. I want to see her too!" Mr. Turner patted Damien on the shoulder, reminding him.
After some casual chat, they got down to business and started discussing work matters.
