Chapter 262: Go Home and Rest
Amelia Davidson removed her sunglasses, her eyes lingering on the two figures before her. Holding the sunglasses in one hand, she pointed at Zoe and quipped, "Are you discarding tools after use now?"
Zoe knew that without Amelia Davidson’s intervention that day, Emma Hart’s innocence would have been impossible to prove, leaving her ashamed to face Amelia.
Leaning close, Amelia whispered into Emma Hart’s ear, "You really have some nerve."
Emma responded playfully, pouting at Amelia, the reasons unspoken yet entirely transparent to her.
Amelia understood the workplace dynamics as much as she did Emma Hart herself. Everything was crystal clear from start to finish.
"Actually, Zoe is quite a kind person," Emma said, looking at Zoe with a hint of regret. "Everyone acts for their own interests; it’s nature. Zoe only harbored those ill intentions momentarily." Emma felt compelled to remember Zoe’s initial kindness in revealing that information to her.
Observing Emma’s indecisiveness, Amelia rolled her eyes, handed Emma a cake she had bought for her, and then turned to Zoe, scrutinizing her. "Look, finding a job is tough these days, especially for recent graduates like you. Why don’t you start by working with me? Of course, if a better opportunity comes along, feel free to take it."
Emma’s eyes lit up, surprised to hear such words from Amelia, the "Ice Queen." Zoe was overjoyed; the situation had been a severe blow, and she had already bought a bus ticket home for the afternoon, not expecting this delightful twist.
Amelia handed Zoe a business card, "Contact me when you’re ready. Take some time to get yourself together first."
With that, Amelia grabbed Emma and headed towards the office, complaining playfully, "I’m freezing to death! Let’s hurry up!"
Emma looked back to see Zoe waving at her, a surprised and joyful expression spreading across her face as she waved non-stop.
Amelia, standing by, looked on with resignation, pretending as if nothing was amiss.
"You just love to play the aloof one!" she teased.
Amelia playfully pinched Emma on the waist, "Who are you talking about? I’ve always been the cool type, it’s not an act!"
Amelia smirked, reflecting on her own generosity, "It seems like it’s been ages since I’ve done a kind deed. That’s just how the workplace is—who’s going to help you? You can only rely on yourself. If you don’t want to trade favors for opportunities, then you must work hard, sweat and tears are the only ways to gain experience."
"If it weren’t for this woman beside me, would I bother with any of this?"
"You’re just stubborn!"
"I’m only doing this for you!"
"Okay, thanks, big sis Amelia! Looks like I still have some pull!" Emma Hart said, pinching her cheeks playfully, though they had indeed gotten a bit chubby. As the two walked toward the interior of the building, Emma inquired, "What brings you to the office today? Isn’t your own company keeping you busy?"
Amelia Davidson had been busy laying the groundwork for her own company, which was starting to take shape after years of hard work and had a solid foundation. "It’s all good; just passing by. Brought you some cake, didn’t want you going hungry," Amelia replied, pausing briefly before playfully touching Emma’s stomach, "I’m definitely the godmother of this child! I’m never getting married; just finding someone to grow old with is enough for me."
Leaning in closer to Emma’s belly, Amelia cheerfully commanded, "Say hi to your godmom, baby!"
Emma laughed, "He can’t do that yet, wait till he’s out!"
Emma was touched by Amelia’s usual demeanor, which seemed even more caring than before, without any prejudice due to the baby. "Aren’t you going to ask me about it?"
Amelia’s hand paused momentarily as she continued to walk with Emma, "When you’re ready to tell me, you’ll say it. I trust the people I choose."
Suddenly, Emma’s phone rang in her pocket. Pulling it out, she saw it was her brother, Max Hart. "Shouldn’t he be in school? Why is he calling all of a sudden?" Emma thought, perplexed. Max had never been one to call; it was usually her reaching out to their mom and grandma.
"Hello? Max?" Emma asked, confusion in her voice.
Silence lingered on the other end of the line, then a sob broke through. Emma’s concern grew, "What’s wrong?"
"Help me, sis, please help me!" Max’s crying intensified.
"Calm down, tell me what’s happened," Emma urged.
"Sis, I owe someone money, and they’re chasing me for it. They say I have three days to pay up, or else..."
"Or else what?"
"They’re going to make a scene at my school, stop me from attending! They even threatened to go after mom and grandma!"
Max had always been like a free spirit since he started at that school, and Emma felt that their mother’s strictness when they were home was the reason he got into trouble once he left. This wasn’t the first time!
"What’s going on?" Emma Hart asked anxiously over the phone. School was of utmost importance to her mother and grandmother, and if those idlers really pressured Max Hart at school, he might as well stop attending altogether. More crucially, she couldn’t let her mother and grandmother find out about the situation given their frail health.
On the other end, Max Hart’s patience was wearing thin. Frustrated, he cut Emma off, "Enough questions! Getting the money is what matters now! I need three hundred thousand in three days!"
"Three hundred thousand? What have you done?" Emma was shocked to hear the desperation in Max’s voice, wondering what he could have possibly gotten into.
"Just drop it! Aren’t you with the big boss? What’s this amount to you?" Max retorted sharply.
The "big boss"? Was that really what her brother thought of her? She had always believed that despite his naivety, they had a deep bond, but now it seemed he was heavily influenced by their grandmother’s misconceptions.
This statement deeply chilled Emma. Just as she was about to scold him, Max abruptly hung up the phone.
Shaking with anger, Emma was comforted by Amelia Davidson at her side, "Don’t be mad, what happened? Calm down for the baby’s sake."
Emma took a deep breath to steady her emotions, exhaling slowly and patting Amelia’s hand, "It’s okay, really."
Amelia, seeing her state, didn’t press further, simply advising, "Let me know if you need anything."
Emma nodded in acknowledgment.
At the design department, Sophia Greenwood approached and noticed Emma sitting there as if nothing had happened. The entire ordeal seemed to have left her unaffected. Damien Sterling had just called, urging her to go home.
