Chapter 220: Worth It? I Know Best
Emma Hart shook her head gently, "It’s alright, may I take a walk alone for a bit?" she asked with a faint smile.
"Emma, I hope my actions just now didn’t upset you," Oliver Westmore spoke softly, his tone laced with a hint of concern.
Looking puzzled, Emma gazed at Oliver. "What do you mean?"
"It was to help you that I grabbed your hand," Oliver admitted, his eyes lowering in a mix of embarrassment and sincerity.
"Ah, yes, it’s fine, really," Emma responded, her lips curling into a smile. Yet, beneath that smile lay a trace of fatigue—a sign that being with someone who makes you tired might just be the wrong person.
In Damien Sterling’s office, the air turned tense.
An assistant knocked and entered, reporting to Damien Sterling, "Mr. Sterling, Mr. Westmore has indeed convened several media outlets, claiming he has a major announcement to make."
Damien’s fingers tightened around the pen he was holding, his knuckles whitening and veins bulging as his expression grew stern. Was Oliver Westmore getting restless? Was he really going to make that announcement?
A chill filled the office, even the assistant, who was there to report, shuddered under the heavy atmosphere.
The assistant, visibly nervous, couldn’t understand why Mr. Sterling was so concerned with Mr. Westmore’s movements lately.
"Arrange a meeting with Oliver Westmore of the Westmore Group," Damien commanded coldly.
The assistant hesitated, recalling the previous friction between the two companies over a land deal. "Would Mr. Westmore agree to meet now?"
Damien pulled a document from his drawer and slammed it on the desk, "Follow my instructions. If he refuses, show him this."
The assistant’s eyes sparkled as he skimmed the document, "Yes, Mr. Sterling, right away."
By the afternoon, Oliver Westmore was seen entering the Sterling Group’s building. Despite being tied up with various matters, the urgency from Sterling’s side was something he couldn’t ignore.
Damien Sterling, known for his decisive moves in the business world, indeed had a knack for leveraging people’s vulnerabilities.
Oliver, always keen on navigating the intricate dance of competition and collaboration inherent to the business world, stepped into Damien’s office with his usual composed demeanor.
As the secretary opened the door for him, Damien Sterling looked up from his desk, his gaze lifting slowly to meet Oliver’s as he entered, maintaining his calm facade in the face of their looming conversation.
"I knew Mr. Westmore would come," the tone laced with a hint of disdain echoed in the room.
Oliver Westmore, after all, is a businessman through and through. When it comes to him, the lines between profit and emotions are clearly drawn, with interests always taking precedence.
Approaching a chair with a smile, Oliver Westmore inquired, "Mr. Sterling, won’t you invite me to sit and discuss?"
Damien Sterling gestured with his hand, offering a seat, "Please."
Neither man made a move to speak first, letting the silence fill the office, which seemed more austere than usual despite its simple decor. The tension was palpable as their gazes locked. Oliver maintained his usual composed demeanor, even in the face of Damien Sterling, who had thrown a punch at him just the day before. Despite this, Oliver’s expression remained serene.
Damien Sterling, on the other hand, exuded his customary chill.
Oliver broke the silence, "I hear Mr. Sterling recently acquired a chemical plant?"
Damien remained stoic, a slight smirk curling at the edges of his lips as he began to speak, "And a monopolistic one at that." His casual tone belied the gravity of his actions; what seemed like a minor decision for Damien was a critical blow to Oliver.
Oliver had previously secured a plot of land to establish a factory, relying on a particular chemical raw material now monopolized by Damien. Oliver had signed numerous orders, believing everything was in place. Now, with fixed prices and Damien monopolizing the needed factory, seeking alternative suppliers was not only impractical but also financially untenable.
How Damien came to know of Oliver’s closely guarded secret was a mystery.
Damien’s gaze darkened, a cold laugh escaping him. This laugh, filled with an intimidating chill, seemed to freeze everything in its vicinity.
"Mr. Westmore, are you planning to use the media to hype your new factory?" Damien inquired, his voice carrying a weight that hinted at deeper implications. In the business world, just like in entertainment, media influence is crucial. Could Oliver Westmore, the CEO of Westmore Group, renowned for his presence in the tabloids, really lack societal attention?
Suggesting Oliver’s announcement of a relationship was merely a publicity stunt for his company’s upcoming product launch seemed closer to the truth.
The real motive behind Damien’s actions, as Oliver realized, was tied to the woman.
Oliver Westmore’s brow relaxed, and with a demeanor of calm, he addressed Damien Sterling, "Mr. Sterling, this acquisition hardly seems fitting for you. After all, monopolizing a chemical plant like this serves no practical purpose for you. It’s hardly worth the effort."
From what Oliver understood, the Sterling Group had no business in this sector, making their purchase of the chemical plant akin to a food manufacturer buying a leather supplier — essentially pointless and a waste of money.
Oliver couldn’t fathom any way Damien could turn this acquisition into a profitable venture. It seemed to him that Damien might have bought the chemical plant solely to spite him, a move Oliver found irrational for any businessman.
Damien glanced at Oliver, a mischievous aura tinting his features as he peered at him with deep, dark eyes. "Whether it’s worth it or not, I’m well aware," he responded, his gaze locking with Oliver’s once more.
Seeing Damien’s serious expression, a sense of decisiveness that even made Oliver slightly uneasy, Oliver realized that Damien’s stubbornness was precisely what he had been counting on.
With a light chuckle, Oliver asked, "Then, what would you have me do?"
At this point, continuing their standoff seemed pointless. It was clear Damien was negotiating terms.
A shadow of intrigue crossed Damien’s inscrutable face. "I believe Mr. Westmore is a smart man."
Oliver nodded, "Alright, I understand."
The next day, the media was unusually quiet. There were no stories about Mr. Westmore, the Sterling Group, or the ordinary girl, Emma Hart.
Oliver continued his routine, picking up Emma Hart after work as he had promised.
Over the phone, Oliver mentioned he had something important to discuss with Emma, who showed up on time outside the company building. Oliver waited for her there, noticeably without a rose in hand.
"It’s a good thing he didn’t bring one," Emma thought to herself, avoiding any unnecessary gossip.
"What did you want to talk about?"
