Chapter 213: Moved by Him

Mrs. Harris, in a flurry of motion, clutched her phone and urgently informed Emma Hart, "It’s Mr. Sterling on the line."

Upon hearing this, Emma scrambled out of the hospital bed, frantically searching for something before finally pulling out her own phone, which displayed several missed calls from Damien Sterling. Could it be that he resorted to calling Mrs. Harris because Emma hadn’t answered? It seemed he was looking for her.

"What should I do?" Mrs. Harris looked up at Emma, seeking guidance.

Emma placed a finger to her lips, signaling Mrs. Harris to secrecy, "Don’t tell him I’m here."

Picking up the call, Mrs. Harris hesitantly began, "Hello, Mr. Sterling..."

"Where are you?"

There was a brief pause before Mrs. Harris continued, "We’re at the hospital."

Damien Sterling’s grip tightened around his phone, "At the hospital? What’s happened to her now?"

With a glance at the tense Emma lying in the hospital bed, Mrs. Harris calmly explained, "Oh, we ran out of one of Miss Emma’s prenatal vitamins. I came to pick up a bottle for her."

"Which hospital are you at? I’ll come and get you."

"The First Hospital."

"Alright."

After hanging up, Emma, both anxious and slightly accusatory, said, "Mrs. Harris, how could you tell him?"

"Mr. Sterling must have already been to the pet hospital to ask like that. I was afraid lying too much would only make him more suspicious," Mrs. Harris reasoned. Having worked for the Sterling family for so long, she was quite familiar with Damien Sterling’s character.

Emma realized she had a point. Even Mrs. Harris had grown savvy to these situations, while she remained naive.

It wasn’t long before Damien Sterling arrived at the hospital entrance.

"Mr. Sterling says he’s here," Mrs. Harris helped Emma up, preparing to leave. Emma released Mrs. Harris’s hand, "I can manage on my own, so he doesn’t notice anything’s wrong with me."

Damien Sterling’s car slowly approached the hospital. Inside, his deep eyes shifted as he saw a familiar vehicle passing in the opposite direction. His brow furrowed; that car looked somewhat like... Oliver Westmore’s. Turning back, the car had disappeared, and Damien dismissed it as a mistake.

Emma and Mrs. Harris quickly made their way to the hospital entrance, where Damien stepped out of his car. Emma approached him nonchalantly.

Noticing Emma and Mrs. Harris, Damien inquired, "Where’s the medicine you bought?"

The pair had packed up their things so quickly they had forgotten about the medication. Damien had astutely picked up on the oversight.

"Oh, the doctor said... said it was out of stock, and we have to wait until next time," Emma explained.

Damien cast a suspicious glance at Mrs. Harris, who, in her nervousness, looked away.

Emma changed the subject, "I need to go to the pet hospital to see Bailey!"

She opened the car door, got in, and Damien also entered the car, heading to the hospital.

At the animal hospital, there was a slight improvement in Bailey’s condition. The veterinarian approached Emma Hart, nodding respectfully—a courtesy undoubtedly influenced by the presence of Damien Sterling behind her. Anxious, Emma inquired, "How’s Bailey doing?"

"Miss Emma, your dog has contracted distemper, but rest assured, it’s not incurable. We’ve imported serum from abroad. We’re 80% confident in Bailey’s recovery," the doctor explained.

Damien Sterling, standing behind, interjected with a commanding tone, "It must be a 100% certainty!" He stepped forward, locking eyes with the doctor, his gaze leaving no room for doubt.

This was an order from Damien Sterling himself.

Throughout these days, Emma had stayed by Bailey’s side in the pet hospital, with Mrs. Harris attending to her needs, ensuring no mishaps occurred.

On the seventh day, Bailey’s condition had improved significantly and was ready to be discharged. Emma received the discharge papers from the doctor, preparing to take Bailey home. Inside the hospital room, she noticed various cages housing adorable puppies, all barking happily at the sight of her.

Drawn to the group of delightful dogs, Emma’s gaze swept over each one, finally resting on a Labrador that bore a striking resemblance to Bailey.

Crouching down, she called out, "Bailey."

The Labrador by the cage responded with excited barks, and only then did Emma realize her mistake.

The Labrador in front of her looked so much like her Bailey. To the uninitiated, one might think they were born from the same mother. Had she not called out "Bailey" and received a reaction from her actual Bailey, Emma might have mistaken this Labrador for her own.

The nurse by her side gently lifted Emma Hart’s Bailey into her arms, prompting Emma to point at the nearby dog she had almost mistaken for her own and ask, "How does this one look so much like my Bailey?"

The doctor glanced at the Labrador in the cage, explaining, "Ah, that’s because Mr. Sterling had us find a Labrador that looks exactly like your dog. It took the director quite an effort to find this one. It seems we did find a very close match, so much so that even you nearly mistook it."

Emma Hart realized then that it was Damian Sterling’s doing. But why would this man want a dog so similar to her Bailey? To be precise, a dog that was an exact replica.

Seeing the confusion on Emma’s face, the doctor casually mentioned, "Perhaps Mr. Sterling was worried Bailey might not make it, and he didn’t want you to be saddened."

Was he really being so considerate? Emma found it hard to believe. Was this the same Damian Sterling who showed no empathy, the man who was always so cold? It was believable that he would spend money to please her, as pleasing her in such a manner was almost nonexistent in his actions. But to go to such lengths, Emma found it hard to trust.

She even thought it might be a sign of some mental split in him. Emma always felt that if it weren’t for Damian Sterling’s delay until the afternoon, perhaps her Bailey wouldn’t have suffered so much. Even doing such a deed could not negate his earlier negligence!

At the duplex villa’s entrance, Emma was about to enter when she noticed Damian Sterling’s car parked outside. Glancing at her phone, she noted it wasn’t yet time to leave work. How come he had returned early? Remembering what the doctor had said upon leaving the hospital, Emma decided she shouldn’t present such a face anymore, to reduce arguments and make life easier for everyone.

After all, Damian Sterling’s actions had moved her, even if just slightly. Emma felt she should say something to Damian Sterling, perhaps a "thank you"? With Bailey snuggling in his arms, Emma felt there was nothing better than having Bailey back safe and sound. Since Bailey was okay, nothing else seemed to matter much.

As Emma walked towards the inside, Damian Sterling coincidentally came out from the door, and they faced each other, moving in opposite directions. Emma pursed her lips, hmm, the words were at the tip of her tongue, yet she didn’t know how to express them.

This man always did things that contradicted each other, leaving Emma unsure how to confront him.

"Emma Hart..."
