Chapter 209: Working in Secret
The doctor tentatively eyed Damian Sterling. "Do you wish to be discharged, or would you prefer to stay in the hospital?"
Damian shot the doctor a look that could freeze lava. Since when had it become his desire whether she would be discharged or not?
Damian, failing to grasp the situation, didn’t realize that Emma Hart understood the doctor’s underlying fear of him. She probably was fine and knew her own body better than anyone. Emma watched the doctors cower before Damian’s simmering rage and decided it was time to contribute to world peace in her own way.
"I want to be discharged," Emma stated, shooting Damian a defiant glance.
The doctor quickly picked up on her cue, addressing Damian, "Actually, Miss Emma’s condition has stabilized. She’s been under observation for three hours now and can be discharged."
Emma boldly addressed Damian, "Did you hear that? The doctor said I could be discharged. I want to leave."
Since their return from the hospital, Damian had issued a strict order for Emma to rest in bed. This was Emma’s second day of confinement in the room, and if she lay there any longer, she might as well grow fur!
Emma opened the door to leave, only to bump into Damian returning home. "Where are you going?" he asked sternly. Emma hung her head and turned around, "I’m about to grow fur. I don’t want to stay in this room any longer."
She shook her arms and turned back to face him, her tone petulant like a child’s, "I’m fine, so why can’t I go to work?"
Damian entered the room and placed two bottles of medicine on Emma’s table. "These are to help with your prenatal care. Remember to take them."
These were supplements he had someone fetch by helicopter, dropping everything, including a meeting, to deliver them in person. No one else was allowed to deliver them; it had to be him, perhaps because he missed her a little.
Emma glanced at the two jars, no doubt another set of pricey supplements. At least she knew anything from Damian wouldn’t be cheap.
"I don’t want to take them," she said stubbornly.
"You have no choice," Damian replied firmly, his gaze commanding.
Emma Hart despised the domineering way Damien Sterling had over her, feeling as though her fate was entirely in his hands, leaving her no freedom whatsoever.
"I still have so many tasks unfinished!" she recalled the collaboration with Amelia Davidson, who had asked for the design drafts by tomorrow. However, with Damien Sterling monitoring her so closely these past days, she hadn’t been able to even touch the computer, let alone finish the design drafts.
"Your only task is to safely give birth to the child!"
The child! Always, it was about the child in her womb that Damien Sterling would bring up, oblivious to Emma Hart’s plans. Knowing further conversation would only anger him, Emma chose silence.
Defiantly, Emma walked to the bed, deciding to ignore Damien Sterling further.
Damien Sterling glanced at her, sighed, seemingly at a loss with this woman.
The ringing of a phone had Damien stepping out of the room to answer the call.
Seeing her chance, Emma got up and tiptoed towards the door, intending to eavesdrop.
"Understood, I’ll be right there!"
A smirk formed on Emma’s lips. Was he busy with something? Perfect, she could work on her designs.
As the man approached, Emma hurried back to her seat, forgetting she had been facing the window earlier. In her excitement, she’d turned around completely.
Upon re-entering, Damien noticed Emma’s awkward sitting posture, "If you need anything, just ask Mrs. Harris."
After leaving the room, not entirely reassured, Damien cast one last glance at Emma, now deliberately positioned as if she couldn’t care less about his departure.
If not for the multitude of tasks needing his attention at the company, he would have kept a closer eye on her.
No sooner had Damien left than Emma was up to no good, pulling out a laptop hidden in the closet. Given the abundance of computers in Damien Sterling’s house, hiding one was easy without him knowing.
Excitedly booting up the laptop, Emma got to work on Amelia Davidson’s design drafts.
The room’s door was locked, forcing Mrs. Harris to knock whenever she came by. After a few visits, Mrs. Harris found Emma’s behavior odd, as if she were secretly up to something, but didn’t pry further.
Emma worked until late into the night, eventually falling asleep at the computer, exhausted.
The door was opened by Damien Sterling, but at a glance he saw the computer in front of the desk emitting a faint light, and the woman was lying on the desk tiredly, leaning on her arms, and actually fell asleep.
Damien’s brow furrowed as he quietly approached the computer desk, his expression one of displeasure. He reached out, closing the laptop with a swift motion, intending to carry her to bed, only for Emma Hart to awaken abruptly. "My design drafts!" were the first words she uttered upon seeing him.
Opening her eyes, Emma was greeted by a handsome face. From this angle, the man’s features were as refined and elegant as those of a Greek god statue. However, the moment of admiration was short-lived as she realized the man was looking at her with a look of disdain.
Glancing down at the now-closed laptop and then at the clock, Emma realized her mistake. She had fallen asleep. Clenching her teeth and pursing her lips, she was at a loss for words. There was no point in further explanation; the truth was evident.
"I was just so bored!" Emma awkwardly tried to explain. But how did boredom justify working on design drafts? Even she couldn’t convince herself with such an explanation.
Damien Sterling was far from convinced. "Bored enough to work, huh? I wish all my employees were ’bored’ like you."
Emma Hart had never been good at pretending. She decided to be truthful with Damien. "This draft is really important! Amelia Davidson needs it by tomorrow!"
"And what does that have to do with you?" Damien asked coldly.
"It’s just that..." Emma hesitated, her eyes darting around. She couldn’t possibly reveal her little scheme to Damien.
She and Amelia Davidson had an agreement. If the deal went through, Amelia was to pay her a significant sum. It was not a small amount, but it was exactly what Emma needed. Even if not now, she would eventually. After all, Emma had a plan she could never let go of.
Under Damien’s imposing gaze, Emma reluctantly lay down in bed to sleep. Yet, the weight in her heart remained, an unresolved burden she could not simply set aside.
