Chapter 145: Secretly Taking a Part-Time Job
Dressed in a crisp suit, Damien Sterling tightened his tie with his slender fingers, his hair neatly fixed at the back, revealing his striking, chiseled features without doubt.
"I need to be away for a few days. You should rest up at home and take care of yourself until I return."
He looked down at Emma Hart, who was wrapped in a blanket on the bed, only her eyes peeking out at him, and couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow.
He was going away for a few days? That was the perfect opportunity to take on a part-time job!
Emma blinked, her hands fluttering on the blanket towards him in an almost eager motion. "Got it, go ahead, I won’t wander off."
Damien Sterling, about to turn away, cast a suspicious glance at Emma Hart, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Why do I get the feeling you’re actually looking forward to me leaving?"
"No, not at all!" A chill ran down her spine, and Emma Hart waved her hands frantically, her expression earnest. "Don’t worry, I’ll be right here waiting for you, see you in three days!"
Despite her assurances, the intuitively sharp Damien Sterling remained somewhat skeptical.
His piercing gaze swept over her slightly flushed cheeks, and he coldly chuckled, "If I find out you’ve done something to displease me..." He let out a cold hum, leaving the threat hanging as he exited the room.
Leaving Emma tensely watching his departing figure until she finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Only when the sound of the car engine and its fading roar reached her from outside the villa did Emma completely relax.
She excitedly sat up, grabbing her phone to search for nearby part-time jobs.
Even though she was essentially being supported by Damien Sterling, Emma was acutely aware of her status and knew better than to rely on anyone but herself. She still had so much debt to repay!
The salary from Sterling Group was unlikely to be substantial, Damien never considered her needs, and his strict work policies meant that even taking a day off was a challenge.
Managing not to have her salary completely deducted or ending up owing the company after a month of work was already an achievement.
Apart from finding time for a part-time job, she couldn’t see any other way to improve her dire financial situation.
"How can the pay for this job be so high?" Emma gaped at her phone, staring at a job listing that offered a salary dozens of times higher than other part-time positions, her mouth hanging open in surprise.
At a renowned evening banquet held in a top-tier mansion in the city, the event was set to last for three days, with the job role being that of a server.
Emma Hart scrutinized the job listing, noting the high salary but equally high expectations for applicants.
The stringent requirements demanded applicants to be young women under thirty, with specific standards for height, weight, and appearance. No wonder there were still vacancies available.
After comparing her own attributes to the job specifications and finding a match, Emma was thrilled to sign up.
That evening, as Mrs. Harris called Emma down for dinner and noticed her unusually upbeat demeanor, she couldn’t help but smile and ask curiously, "What’s got into you, dear? It’s rare to see you this happy."
Emma, unable to share the real reason for her excitement about the part-time job with Mrs. Harris, brushed it off, saying, "Oh, just had a nice chat with someone."
Mrs. Harris, understanding that young people have their own social circles, didn’t pry further and served a delicious meal.
The next morning, after breakfast, Emma made an excuse about her grandmother needing urgent assistance to convincingly persuade Mrs. Harris to let her leave the house.
She then quickly headed to the location of her part-time job.
The workplace, a top-tier mansion, was as grand as a palace, justifying the high recruitment standards for a server position.
Upon arrival, Emma found the supervisor, a woman in her forties with a demeanor that spelled experience. She was efficiently and calmly directing the staff, a picture of competence.
Emma hurried over to greet her. The supervisor, stern at first, scrutinized Emma but relaxed upon verifying her suitability. She then had someone guide Emma to get her uniform and change into it immediately.
The banquet was to start at 7 PM, leaving Emma busy as a bee all afternoon, getting a taste of what it meant to be truly swamped.
As the banquet neared and during a brief handover break, Emma finally got a chance to rest in the staff room and grab something to eat; their dinner would only come after the event ended.
Just as she was about to alleviate the dryness in her mouth with a sip of water after eating a small cake, a furious voice outside startled her nearly to a jump.
"There are ten minutes until the banquet starts, and you’re telling me now you can’t make it? Let me tell you, if you dare stand me up, your name will go on the blacklist of every company in this city, and you can forget about finding a respectable job ever again!"
Recognizing the supervisor’s voice, Emma swallowed hard.
The chilling fury in that outburst was worlds away from the composed figure she had initially met, almost demonic in its intensity.
The door to the break room burst open, and Emma Hart, sitting upright with a serious expression, turned her attention to the person striding in.
"What are you doing here?" the manager asked, frowning at Emma, who had cake crumbs around her mouth.
Emma replied with a polite smile, quickly saying, "Hello, manager, I’m Emma Hart. I’m here for a part-time position, and I even looked for you this afternoon..." Well, it didn’t matter if they had met before or not; clearly, the manager had forgotten her.
The manager, still frowning and silent, evidently couldn’t recall her. But that was momentarily irrelevant.
The manager swiftly approached Emma, her piercing gaze scanning Emma’s delicately fair face and shapely figure, causing Emma to feel uncomfortably scrutinized.
"Um... Manager?" Emma tensed up, hesitantly meeting the manager’s intense gaze, feeling embarrassed even though the manager was a woman.
Before Emma could fully process her discomfort, the manager suddenly straightened up and clapped her hands with a snap.
"Alright, it’s you. Get changed and head to the lobby to offer drinks later!" It seemed the manager had made a decision, her gaze on Emma undeniably intense.
Emma was taken aback, unsure of the manager’s meaning, and asked in confusion, "Manager, I was supposed to serve guests in the lobby later anyway. And, aren’t I already dressed?"
The manager, not in the mood for discussion, assertively offered, "I’ll double your pay to fill in for someone who canceled last minute. Just change into the outfit and take a couple of laps around the stage with the drinks. Are you in?"
The words "double pay" swirled in Emma’s head, dizzying her with the prospect.
Her original salary was already quite generous, and now it was to be doubled? Without having the chance to think it through, she found herself hastily agreeing, pulled along by the manager.
