Chapter 136: The Villa Gift
The recent incident had added a significant burden to Emma Hart’s life, and her brother had seemingly learned his lesson as his companions left in disappointment, muttering, "Don’t forget to cover the bill tonight at Seduce, just like you promised!"
Seduce? Emma was well aware of what kind of place that was, and the thought that her not-yet-adult brother was frequenting such establishments shocked her.
"You’re here to study, do you understand? You need to focus on your studies and earn money to support mom and grandma. Do you think your current behavior is fitting for a college student? What are you doing messing around here?"
Emma lectured her brother, who retorted defiantly, "Stop preaching about school. How much can I possibly earn from studying? I’m getting paid just to have fun right now. Isn’t this the life?"
"Who’s paying you?" Emma had already limited his allowance, which couldn’t possibly afford him the luxury of high-end venues.
Remembering a past incident, she worried he might have borrowed money again, still feeling uneasy about it.
"As long as someone’s paying, that’s all that matters!"
"Sister, you have another rich boyfriend, right? But I think this one is not as good as the last one!"
"What are you talking about? Don’t let me catch you neglecting your studies again, or you won’t see a dime from me!" Emma threatened helplessly.
"Who’s the boyfriend you’re talking about?"
Her brother pointed behind her, "Sis, your boyfriend’s here."
Turning around, Emma was surprised to see Oliver Westmore.
By the campus lake, Emma Hart and Oliver Westmore were walking together.
"I’ll pay you back the money."
"What money?"
"The money you gave my brother." Oliver smiled lightly, "Don’t worry about the money. I just happened to overhear you on the phone last time and felt you might be in trouble, so I took the liberty of helping."
Emma looked at Oliver cautiously, sensing a change in the once clear and straightforward man.
Their initial acquaintance felt like a long-standing friendship, comfortable and close, yet appropriately distant.
Now, that sensation seemed to be fading, as if Oliver was deliberately weaving himself into her life without clear reason.
"Please don’t give him any more money. I’ll take care of his issues."
"Alright, Emma..." Oliver hesitated, "I just don’t want you to struggle so much."
His words carried an emotional weight that Emma found hard to classify as mere friendship, stirring a resistance within her.
The distance between them grew, with Emma consciously avoiding Oliver Westmore.
As Emma Hart approached the door, she deliberately glanced at her watch and announced, "It’s getting late; I need to leave."
Oliver Westmore hesitated, finally gesturing in resignation, "Alright."
Turning away with furrowed brows, Emma hurried off, her mind buzzing with unease. She couldn’t deny her feelings, but she was certain they were wrong, absolutely wrong!
No sooner had she thought this than Oliver Westmore’s voice halted her, "Emma!"
Her heart raced, fearing the very thing she wished to avoid.
Feigning nonchalance, Emma turned around, forcing a smile, and asked with feigned calm, "What’s up? Is there something you need?"
Oliver smiled gently and proposed, "If possible, let me take care of you, okay?"
Emma froze, her earlier jest becoming reality. How was she supposed to accept a man’s kindness under her current circumstances?
Emma dropped her smile, unable to find an appropriate expression to confront Oliver’s offer. She wavered between genuine expression and feigned happiness, about to decline his feelings.
But Oliver cut her off, "Hide your answer for now! Don’t tell me yet."
"But..." Emma barely began before Oliver turned and walked away in the opposite direction.
Her phone rang in her bag; it was her mother calling.
Rushing to the location her mother mentioned, Emma saw her grandmother wandering around a villa.
Her mother, upon seeing Emma, pulled her over, "Emma, did you buy this house?"
Her? Did her mother think she owned a gold mine?
Emma, equally puzzled, faced the villa, "Who told you to come here?"
"It was the property management who called us, saying there was a villa registered under your name. Soon after, someone came to pick us up and brought us here," her mother explained, her eyes betraying a mix of joy and concern.
"Emma, this person must care deeply for you, to have put the villa directly under your name. Ignoring the interior, this place must be worth at least a million or so, right?"
A million? Her mother was naive. This villa, especially in such a prime location, would cost millions.
Emma thought of Damien Sterling; this house might well be his gift to her, but she couldn’t possibly live here.
Emma Hart had to extract her grandmother from the sprawling villa, who was nearly lost in its vastness.
Releasing Emma’s arm, her grandmother expressed her awe, "Oh, what a splendid house this is. Living in such a fine place fulfills a lifelong dream of mine."
"But Grandma, we can’t stay here," Emma insisted.
Her grandmother became agitated at this, questioning, "And why can’t we live here? What about those men you’re with? Can’t they secure a house for you?"
"Those men?" Emma puzzled over her grandmother’s insinuations, wondering if she suspected Emma of engaging in disreputable activities.
"Suit yourself! Stay if you like," Emma retorted, frustrated, deciding then to pay no mind to her grandmother’s provocations.
At the Sterling Group villa, Emma had intended to confirm whether Damien Sterling had indeed bought the villa for her grandmother.
However, before Damien could return that evening, Emma learned the truth from Mrs. Harris.
While discussing a promotional flyer Emma had brought back, which Mrs. Harris spotted on the table, she remarked, "Isn’t this the new villa development that’s just been launched?"
"Do you know of it, Mrs. Harris?" Emma asked, intrigued.
Mrs. Harris nodded, scrutinizing the flyer, "See, it says right here—Westmore Group."
Westmore Group?
The realization hit Emma hard, leaving her feeling deeply indebted.
Could it be that Oliver Westmore was the benefactor behind this gesture as well?
