Chapter 93 - 89: Daier

Chapter 93: Chapter 89: Daier

In the evening, Luo’er returned to the dormitory where the servants slept. Most of them were already asleep, and the air was filled with a variety of strange smells. Beds were lined up side by side, it was called a dormitory, but Luo’er felt it was not much different from a prison cell.

He climbed onto his own bed. The bed was stuffed with straw and topped with a rough, torn sheet and a barely adequate blanket. The dormitory was filled with loud snoring noises. Lying on the bed, Luo’er thought of Tangmo, who was probably lying in a soft velvet bed at this moment. He felt reassured, closed his eyes and slowly drifted to sleep.

At dawn, he was rudely awakened by the kitchen supervisor. If he hadn’t gotten up promptly, he might have taken a few kicks.

It wasn’t even dawn yet, but they had to start preparing for the day’s work. Luo’er used well water to wash his face. Winter was approaching and the well water was extremely cold, instantly making him feel alert.

The collar around his neck was indeed rather superfluous, and he was constantly considering a logical reason to take it off. Initially, it was hung around his neck as a form of emphasizing his slave status. Thinking about that now, Luo’er felt it was quite foolish.

Sighing helplessly, Luo’er twisted his neck and started working. Because of his half-elf status, even among the lower-class servants, he was despised. Although they didn’t outwardly show contempt, their gazes and words subtly carried hints of disdain.

By morning, they were finally relieved from their bustling work. As a slave, Luo’er had to serve breakfast to his master. He casually picked out some prepared food and came to Tangmo’s door.

He gently knocked a few times, but no one responded. Subconsciously, Luo’er pushed the door open and found that she still had not locked it. He sighed helplessly, entered Tangmo’s room with the food.

Tangmo was sound asleep in bed, in an ungraceful posture. Her skirt and socks were thrown all over the place. Luo’er put down the food and began to tidy up her room. Coming to the bedside, watching her tranquil sleeping face, he bent over and pinched her delicate small nose.

Tangmo soon was making a rough snoring sound. She suddenly opened her eyes wide and, seeing Luo’er at close quarters, reached out to grab his neck.

"Luo’er..." Tangmo mumbled, half asleep.

"Wake up, stop sleeping!" Luo’er sighed. They were woken up before dawn while Tangmo, as a student, could sleep in. It felt unfair to think about.

But he only thought about it. Truthfully speaking, as Tangmo mentioned last night, if he exchanged identities with her, he surely wouldn’t agree. Rather than seeing Tangmo suffer, he was willing to bear the hardship himself.

"This bed is too comfortable, I must have overslept." Tangmo sat up from the bed, rubbing her eyes apologetically.

"Hurry up and change your clothes, then eat and go to class!" Luo’er said.

"Luo’er, help me get dressed!" Tangmo spread her arms, pleading in a childish tone.

She was wearing a thin strap nightdress and short pajama pants, leaving much to the imagination. Although he was used to it, Luo’er couldn’t help blushing and turned his back to her saying, "No, change yourself!"

"Aren’t you my slave? Shouldn’t slaves help their masters get dressed?" Tangmo argued, puckering her lips.

"So now you’re willing to admit that I’m a slave..." Luo’er responded with speechless reproach.

In the end, Tangmo couldn’t win over him and grumpily got out of bed to change her clothes on her own. The uniform she wore was specially prepared by the academy for her. It was a sky-blue dress combined with a white vest cinched at the waist and white stockings, which made Tangmo look more refined.

"Do I look good?" Tangmo asked, tying her hair back with hopeful anticipation.

"Yes." Luo’er nodded honestly. Indeed, the outfit suited her well. Apparently, it was specifically tailor-made for her by Dean Shariya who had worked overtime last night.

Upon hearing Luo’er’s compliment, Tangmo couldn’t help but smile. Luo’er walked over, took the hairband from her hand, and helped her tie up her hair.

"Moumou, act naturally in class today, don’t be too reserved. Just focus on your classes for now, leave the investigating to us."

"When can we leave here?" Tangmo looked up at him and asked. Although the bed was soft, the clothes were beautiful, and life was quite relaxing, she cared more about the hardships Luo’er had to endure.

"We’ll leave after the investigation is complete. But I fear you won’t want to leave by then." Luo’er joked.

"As long as Luo’er does not suffer, I don’t mind anything!" Tangmo said sincerely.

"I see, go have your breakfast and then go to class!" Hearing her words, Luo’er paused for a moment, a warm feeling welling up in his heart. He gently stroked her head and said tenderly.

After sending Tangmo off, Luo’er had to continue with his work. There was no chance to investigate during the day. Luo’er figured it would be best to start when it was quieter and there were fewer people around in the evening.

Luo’er was busy washing dishes in the kitchen when he suddenly felt someone approach. Instinctively, his body trembled, and he quickly moved aside.

"I’m sorry if I startled you, continue!" A gentle female voice sounded next to him, he lifted his head, and saw a young girl smiling at him.

This was a young girl, about twenty-three years old, with distinct features of the Aud people. She had flaxen hair, wore a servant’s characteristic headscarf, and a simple working dress.

Her skin was slightly dark, probably due to constant work. Her facial features were sharp, but upon close scrutiny, one could see the freckles dotting her face. There was a hint of weariness in her eyes, yet there was no disdain in her gaze at Luo’er.

"You’re a half-elf?" The girl asked blinking at him.

"Yes..." Luo’er lowered his head and answered quietly.

"Don’t be scared, I won’t hurt you." The girl looked at him, her face softening into a gentle smile.

"Then, I, I should get back to work..." Luo’er said in a low, stammering tone.

"Let me help you!" The girl rolled up her sleeves, moved alongside him, and started helping with his tasks.

"Thank you..." Luo’er murmured too faintly to hear.

"You’re not a servant for the academy, are you?" The girl looked him up and down as she asked.

"I, I’m Miss Audrey’s slave." Luo’er said in a weak voice.

"A slave..." The girl gave him a once-over, her eyes clearly filled with pity.

"My name’s Daier, I’m from Masya!" The girl introduced herself with a smile, deftly changing the topic.

"My name is Luo’er..." Luo’er whispered, his head lowered.

"Luo’er, you seem so shy," Daier chuckled, "Don’t be scared, I won’t hurt you."

"Thank you, you’re the first person to talk to me, I, I’m a bit..." Luo’er appeared excited, his words tumbling out incoherently.

"It’s okay, if you don’t mind, let’s be friends!" Daier said with a smile. Her eyes curved into beautiful crescents when she laughed. Luo’er couldn’t help but think of how stunningly beautiful she was.

"Thank you..." Luo’er said, touched. He was genuinely grateful to Daier for accepting him as a friend.

With her active conversation, the two of them began to talk freely. From their conversation, Luo’er learned that Daier was from Masya. Her family had sent her to live with her uncle in Holy Heart City, and her uncle had then appointed her as a servant at the Sacred Heart Magic Academy. Despite the hard life, at least she had food to eat and a place to sleep every day, and it was an extravagance to her.

"I’ve heard that a war is raging in Masya now, is that right?" Luo’er asked cautiously.

"Yes," Daier nodded. Her face fell as she admitted this, for even in Odelanqi, she was constantly concerned about Masya.

"Why are they fighting?" Luo’er asked.

"I’m not sure," Daier shook her head before continuing, "Rumor has it that some of the peasants under a certain lord were dissatisfied with his taxation and began to resist him. Initially, it was just a simple conflict. However, it’s said that the people from the Otherworld are supporting them, providing them with weapons. Armed with these weapons, the peasants began to resist the lord, and those from other regions began to follow suit."

Upon hearing this, a chill ran down Luo’er’s spine. He wondered if the weapons missing in Odelanqi were being used to aid the Masyan peasant uprising. If that were the case, what was brewing in Odelanqi?

"What’s wrong?" Daier asked, noticing the serious look that had taken over Luo’er’s face.

"Oh, it’s just a bit puzzling for me..." Luo’er returned to his senses, his humble expression reappearing.

"I don’t understand it either. These disputes are between the lords themselves. They have nothing to do with ordinary people like us." Daier sighed.

"Are you saying that the people shouldn’t revolt?" Luo’er asked.

"What’s the point? After the war is over, they’ll still have to go back to serving under the lord’s rule and continue their work." Daier sighed.

"What if they manage to overpower the lord and replace him?" Luo’er asked.

"That’s impossible, the Kingdom would never recognize their position." Daier shook her head, sighing.

"Is that so?" Luo’er wisely closed his mouth.

"Let’s not talk about that anymore," Daier changed topics," Whose servant are you, exactly?"

"Mi...Miss Audrey’s." Luo’er answered truthfully.

"That new noblewoman," Daier exclaimed," I heard she’s a magic prodigy, and the Dean himself has invited her to join the academy."

"Yes!" Luo’er nodded, a headache already forming at what he considered a troublesome issue. Due to TangMo’s attraction, she was constantly in the public eye and unable to carry out reconnaissance work, leaving the entire mission on his shoulders.

"Does Miss Audrey treat you well?" Daier asked.

"Miss Audrey seems awkward on the outside, but she’s very kind-hearted." Luo’er replied honestly, and remembered TangMo’s words warming him from the inside out.

"That’s good," Daier said with a smile, "Looking at your face, it seems to me that Miss Audrey is indeed a very kind person."
