Chapter 887: Chapter 880: Marching Grave

However, even if Hu Daoke managed to repair the rifle, it was useless, as Axia didn’t have the matching bullets. Speaking of which, the merchants who sold the guns to Axia were also to blame for not caring about the compatibility of the weapons and selling her a bunch of mismatched bullets just to make extra sales.

These bullets all looked similar on the outside, and it was easy for inexperienced Otherworld folk to be deceived into thinking they were all the same. Only someone with a knowledge of firearms, like Hu Daoke, could discern the differences.

Hu Daoke even spotted a few 7.62X51 NATO standard rounds among the bullets, knowing that Axia didn’t have a rifle capable of firing them, meaning she’d been swindled by the merchants without even realizing it.

"I’ll write you a list, just make a note, and when you go to the merchants to buy guns next time, be sure to understand which bullets match which guns. By the way, take these bullets to them and tell them what models they are; that way, they probably won’t dare to dupe you next time," Hu Daoke sighed and said.

"Oh, thank you..." Axia was completely confused and nodded blankly.

"Don’t mention it, we should be thanking you for taking us in," Hu Daoke said as he put down the rifle.

The G98 rifle he held wasn’t antique, and judging by its finish and craftsmanship, it appeared to have been produced within the last decade and was in fairly good condition, arguably the best among all the scrap weapons.

"By the way, did you buy these guns to protect yourself?" Luo’er couldn’t help asking.

He had noticed that Axia was actually skilled in magic, and not just a novice. When they had first arrived at Axia’s home, if it hadn’t been for Tangmo’s warning, they would have likely fallen into traps.

Obviously, if Axia was skilled in magic, it was unlikely she needed firearms for protection, as bolt-action rifles are limited in combat effectiveness and less effective than magic in the Otherworld.

"Ah, it’s mainly for hunting to supplement our food and occasionally to collect some furs to sell to those merchants," Axia replied.

"How do you manage to hunt with this kind of rifle?" Luo’er asked.

"If you get within ten meters and then fire, it’s fine," Axia answered, "but indeed, this rifle isn’t very accurate. I didn’t manage to stockpile much fur last summer."

"There should still be game in winter, right?" Hu Daoke asked.

"Yes, but hunting in winter is more troublesome, and with the poor weapons, I seldom go out to hunt," Axia shrugged and replied.

"Hey, let’s go hunting then. We can’t just stay here eating and drinking for free; we have to do something to feel at ease, right?" Hu Daoke’s spirits were roused upon hearing this.

"Actually, it’s mainly you who wants to go," Cheng Ziang rolled his eyes and said, "You can go if you want, but I’m not going. It’s too cold outside for me."

"Don’t give me that; don’t you have Snow Elf blood? What’s to fear from the cold?" Hu Daoke said discontentedly.

"Yue’er, do you want to go?" Luo’er turned to Baiyue, noting her eager expression.

"Can I?" Baiyue asked with wide eyes.

"Go ahead if you want to, why ask me?" Luo’er smiled and then spoke seriously, "Watch your step, don’t get lost, and remember to come back early."

"Alright, then we’re off." Baiyue said excitedly, following Hu Daoke.

"Little Fengye, are you going hunting? It’s your chance to show off!" Hu Daoke called out.

"Yes, yes, yes!" Feng nodded vigorously, though his gaze remained firmly on Luo’er.

"Go ahead, the earlier you go, the earlier you return," Luo’er said with a smile.

"Alright!" Feng, given permission, followed Hu Daoke, clutching his knife.

Watching the three people leave, Luo’er shook his head helplessly, with a sigh of emotion. Axia stared at him and finally couldn’t help but ask, "I guess you must be older than your teammates, right?"

"Sort of," Luo’er said, startled for a moment before nodding, "About ten years older I suppose."

"Indeed, just as I expected. Although you look younger, you are after all a half-elf, so you are definitely older than they are," Axia said with a smile.

"Miss Axia, would it be inconvenient for you to answer a few questions for us?" Luo’er asked respectfully.

"Go ahead, I’ve got nothing else to do anyway," Axia nodded and said.

"Do you happen to know of a book called the Ancient Scripture?" Luo’er asked directly.

"You also want to find this book. What are you planning to do with it?" Axia stared at him and asked.

"Uh, this..." Luo’er and Cheng Ziang exchanged glances, then said with apologetic faces, "I’m sorry, that is a military secret, we cannot answer."

"You don’t need to say it, I can guess," Axia said, squinting at them, "It’s for the Otherworld Gate, right?"

"Uh..." The two were silent, which was as good as an admission.

"Ah, you are the second person looking for this book. I don’t know if I can trust you like I did that guy, especially after he deceived Eve and me..." Axia said, looking up at the ceiling.

"We do not discuss personal feelings with Eve, only interests. We help her take care of her brother, and she helps us find the Ancient Scripture," Luo’er replied.

"You are using her brother to coerce her?" Axia asked.

"That’s not quite right to say, if we say we are helping, then it is out of kindness, without any ulterior motives. You can verify that with Eve. Eve wishes to send her brother back to the Snow Domain, but we felt that a half-elf, even if sent to the Snow Domain on time, would end up no different from staying in Holy Heart City. So, we suggested she send her brother to stay with us," Luo’er explained truthfully.

"Alas, that girl Eve, always like this..." Axia sighed.

"Regarding the ancient tombs in the Snow Domain, how much do you know?" Luo’er asked tentatively.

Axia glanced at him, then took a deep breath, finally willing to help them: "There are two types of ancient tombs in the Snow Domain, those of the Aud people and those of the Snow Elves..."

"If I’m not mistaken, didn’t the Snow Elves practice sky burial?" Cheng Ziang couldn’t help interrupting and asking.

"That was true, but ever since they were ruled by the Aud Empire, many of the Snow Elves’ ideas have gradually aligned with those of the Aud people, and so some of the Snow Elf nobility also began to adopt the custom of constructing tombs for their final resting places," Axia explained.

"So that means the Snow Elves have also begun to build tombs now and won’t just stick to sky burials anymore," Luo’er and Cheng Ziang said to each other after exchanging a glance.

"Most of the Snow Elf tombs were built in the late period of the collapse of the Aud Empire’s rule, so they are not very valuable. If you want to find ancient scriptures like the Ancient Scripture, the best bet would be to look inside the tombs of the Aud people," Axia continued.

"And among these, the most valuable tombs are those of the Aud people’s marching grave..." Axia paused, then continued.

"Marching grave..." The two exchanged glances again, then both turned to ask Axia, "What is that?"

"A marching grave is a grand tomb where the deceased generals and soldiers of the Aud Empire are buried," Axia began to explain, "Although the Aud Empire ultimately subdued the Snow Domain, the resistance of the local inhabitants still caused enormous damage to the empire, with a great number of soldiers slain, hastily laid to rest."

"After the Aud Empire unified the Snow Domain, the Emperor at the time, in order to commemorate this victory, forced war prisoners and laborers to construct several large centralized tombs in the Snow Domain. They then exhumed the bodies of Aud soldiers buried all over and reinterred them in these tombs, along with fallen generals."

"Each tomb was for a legion, and hence they were called marching graves. The Emperor of the Aud Empire believed that this way, even after his death, he could continue to command these legions to expand territories for him in another world. In addition to the bodies, these tombs also contained a vast amount of war loots as burial goods, among which might be the Ancient Scripture you’ve been after."
