Chapter 884: Chapter 877: Violating Doctrine
"Luo’er..." Tangmo hurriedly stepped forward and reached out to grab Luo’er’s arm. It was only then that she noticed Luo’er’s body was tensed up, very stiff, and surprisingly strong, as she was instantly dragged along by his flailing arm the moment she touched it.
"The Soul Summoning Bell!" Cheng Ziang shouted as a reminder.
His words woke everyone up, and Baiyue quickly tightened her grip on the string of the Soul Summoning Bell, then started to spin and shake the little bell just as Axia had done.
The spindle-shaped top within the Soul Summoning Bell emitted a humming sound once again, echoing in everyone’s minds. The moment they heard the sound, Luo’er’s body went limp, and he stumbled before falling straight forward.
Worried for Luo’er, Tangmo quickly stepped forward and rushed in front of him, bracing herself with her petite body against the weight of Luo’er’s fall. She herself was propelled to the wall by the impact, but her hands protected Luo’er’s head, preventing it from hitting the wall.
"It looks like it really is Tana calling him..." Axia’s expression turned serious upon seeing Luo’er’s condition.
Before long, Luo’er slowly opened his half-closed eyes, then looked at Tangmo in front of him with a bewildered expression and asked, "Eh, what happened to me again, wasn’t I just..."
He stopped mid-sentence, as it was apparent from the situation that he had been influenced by Tana again.
"You scared me to death..." Tangmo let out a sigh of relief, and then instinctively wrapped her arms around Luo’er’s neck, leaning on his chest sincerely lamenting.
"The Soul Summoning Bell is indeed useful, but this also corroborates the fact that Luo’er has really been bewitched by Tana," Cheng Ziang pondered, then looked towards Axia and asked, "Why would Tana target Luo’er? Is it simply because of the connection he established with her?"
"I’ve already said before, Tana is targeting Luo’er clearly because he has gone against her wishes," Axia replied gravely.
"What are these wishes exactly, and where did Luo’er offend Tana?" Cheng Ziang asked, puzzled.
"That’s for you to figure out. If you want to find the reason, I think you should start with him," Axia said, looking towards Luo’er.
"Wow, I feel like Tana is always following us, secretly watching us from some corner, eavesdropping on our conversations," Hu Daoke said, shivering involuntarily as the feeling of being watched was unsettling for anyone.
"Tana is omnipresent, after all, she is a goddess," Cheng Ziang said calmly, "Don’t forget, Fulajie’er is a demigoddess, a bound goddess, while Tana is a true goddess, free and unfettered."
"If she’s so powerful, couldn’t she easily dispose of us if she got angry?" Hu Daoke asked, his eyes wide with alarm.
"Tana wouldn’t harm others; she is a goddess of the Elf Race, not a goddess of this world," Axia reminded again.
"A goddess of the Elf Race who persecutes elves, what kind of goddess is that? She’s clearly a demon!" Hu Daoke retorted.
"This..." Axia, who lived alone in the deep mountains and lacked the opportunity to communicate with the outside world, clearly had her logical speaking abilities decline, and was left speechless by Hu Daoke’s rebuttal.
"Enough, this is not the time to discuss this," Cheng Ziang glared at Hu Daoke, signaling him to be silent, and then looked at Axia and asked, "If Luo’er did indeed offend Tana in some way, what could it be?"
"I’ve said it before," Axia regained her composed demeanor before firmly stating, "Doctrine—it must be because Luo’er violated the doctrine, which is Tana’s bottom line. Otherwise, I really can’t imagine what it could be that would make Tana harm Luo’er."
"Doctrine..." Cheng Ziang lowered his head, contemplating the few doctrines Axia had just mentioned, and then murmured to himself, "Isolationistic... conservative... bloodline purity... no contact with other races..."
Baiyue watched Cheng Ziang muttering to himself; suddenly, a flash of insight struck her mind like lightning, and she gasped in shock, her eyes wide open, "Elf Planet!!"
"What?" Everyone turned to look at her, wondering why she had such an outburst.
"The Elf Planet Project, it has to be the Elf Planet Project!" Baiyue said excitedly.
"Slow down, what is the Elf Planet Project, why does it sound familiar?" Cheng Ziang asked her.
Baiyue took a few deep breaths to calm her excitement, then looked seriously at the others and said, "I’ve seen files related to this project in the archives. To put it plainly, the Elf Planet Project aims to use the Elf Race’s genes to improve Earth’s human species, endowing them with long lifespans and appearances that conform to widespread aesthetic ideals."
"Elf Planet..." Cheng Ziang mused, quickly catching on, "Right, the Elf Planet Project defies the Elf Race’s doctrines of bloodline purity and avoiding contact with other races. This must be why she would harm Luo’er."
With that, he turned to Luo’er with a serious expression and asked, "Luo’er, do you know about the Elf Planet Project?"
"Yes," Luo’er nodded, acknowledging the truth, then said, "I’ve seen the project’s files, firsthand information detailing various aspects of the Elf Planet Project."
Although Luo’er never made it explicit, everyone was aware that she had a close relationship with the headquarters’ high echelons and was privy to many of the core secrets of headquarters.
As for the Elf Planet Project, it wasn’t a proposal put forward by headquarters alone; they were just participants. The initiative was brought by experts in the field of biological schemes on Earth. All the nations of Earth received the proposal’s brochure and had discussed it several times.
While the Elf Planet Project’s results were tempting, there were many issues to resolve. The first was the genetic engineering problem. Before Luo’er appeared, Earth’s scientists once believed there was reproductive isolation between the Elf Race and Earth humans, an issue that was clarified only after Luo’er emerged.
Then there was the ideological conflict. Given the dominant genes of the Elf Race, any progeny would inevitably bear distinct Elf traits. Thus, many scientists worried that it wasn’t Earth humans improving their genetics but rather the Elf species invading Earth. Such a thought would certainly be unacceptable in public discourse.
Beyond that, many other issues urgently needed addressing, such as how to coordinate among nations, how to allocate resources, and whether to directly improve offspring or to modify and correct the existing populations, among other things.
Currently, as nations’ general stance towards the Otherworld remained competitive, although the Elf Planet Project was enticing, not many were willing to put it into action.
However, with the unveiling of the Origin Project and the breakthrough in genetic engineering by headquarters, Earth’s scientists saw a new dawn, and thus the Elf Planet Project once again came up for discussion.
Yet, at present, Earth humans hadn’t even officially brought controlled nuclear fusion technology out of the laboratory, hence the general attitude towards the Elf Planet Project was one of watchfulness.
As one politician put it, when humanity solves the issue of infinite energy, then we can consider unlimited lifespans. Limited resources and infinite lifespans would only make Earth increasingly impoverished.
"I have another question," Cheng Ziang turned to Axia, a frown on his face, after hearing Luo’er’s response, "Is it so that as long as a connection is established, Tana can then extract the memories from Luo’er’s mind? If not so, then how did Tana come to know Luo’er had violated her doctrines?"
"Correct, as long as a connection is established, Tana can see into your mind, which is why I need to sever my connection with Tana," Axia nodded in reply.
