Chapter 880: Chapter 873: Combined Magic Array

Axia stepped into the cabin, where the temperature inside was nearly the same as outside; the ice bomb had instantly dropped the cozy little cabin’s temperature to below freezing point.

In one hand Axia carried a gun, and with the other, she drew a magic wand from her waist, waving it slightly in the air while silently chanting Spells.

Suddenly, the magical energy in the air intensely twisted, and the candles and campfire inside the cabin reignited in an instant, filling the room with a bright and warm glow.

As Axia silently chanted Spells, Tangmo sneakily moved behind her, listening intently. He discovered that her magic incantations were straightforward flame system Spells,

but even so, her chanting rhythm and intonation slightly differed from the traditional incantations. One could say that Axia’s chanting was more pleasant to hear.

As mentioned before, all Spells in Otherworld are fixed, regardless of racial identity, with everyone using the same set. Although there may be slight differences in sentence structure or tone among individuals, it doesn’t generally affect the effectiveness of the Spells.

The Elf Race is proficient in magic and even more adept at chanting Spells, and even the Magicians of the Church of Light have to admit this.

According to papers published by Earth scientists, the incantations chanted by the Elf Race—whether in sentence structure or pauses—are closer to the most original version of the Spells. On the other hand, the incantations used by the Human Race have undergone some syntactical adjustments.

It has been said before that names among the Elf Race mostly consist of two or three syllables, which is primarily related to their language. Elvish is accustomed to short phrases; often, a sentence needs to be broken into several parts for expression, hence Spells are chanted in a similar fashion.

However, as the Elf Race interacts more with the Human Race, especially those Elves who have learned the Tasta language, they have largely abandoned such customs and have gradually become accustomed to using longer sentences in conversation.

The more the Elves interact with the Human Race, the more evident the differences become. A simple example is that the Elf Race typically refers to magic as "Arcane," which is a direct translation meaning "mysterious sorcery."

In fact, nowadays, only Ilanadale still refers to magic as "Arcane," while Night Elves and Snow Elves, who have been in significant contact with the Human Race, no longer use the term "Arcane" and instead collectively refer to it as "Magic."

The Night Elves follow the teachings of Xiapei Kam and are proactive in interacting with other races, so the change is quite evident. The Snow Elves, once ruled by the Aud Empire, have thus integrated into Human society, and many customs originally unique to the Elf Race have gradually faded away.

On the contrary, Ilanadale, which has never been conquered, still staunchly adheres to the ancient traditions of the Elf Race. It is uncertain whether this adherence is a blessing or a cause for concern for them.

Although the campfire in the fireplace had reignited, the temperature inside the room remained very low. Axia took a step back and then, holding her magic wand, began rotating it back and forth while murmuring under her breath.

What happened next was surprising. Everyone felt the magical energy in the air violently fluctuate once again, and then, the Magic Array in the center of the room that had just released an enormous amount of cold air suddenly emitted light again. After a brief delay, a wave of heat spread from the center of the Magic Array in all directions.

The sudden heat wave startled everyone, making them take several steps back. Luo gaped, checking his eyelashes and hair to see if they had been singed, as the wave of heat had made him feel as if he’d been lightly scorched by flames.

"Ah, sorry, I didn’t warn you guys," Axia turned around, her tone devoid of any apology.

After such commotion, the room instantly became swelteringly hot. Luo felt that if the wave of heat had been just a few degrees higher, the entire room might have gone up in flames.

"Didn’t the Magic Array just release a burst of cold air? How can it now emit hot air?" Once the heat wave had subsided, Tangmo stepped forward, crouched down, and touched the engraved Magic Array on the ground, asking in surprise.

"You seem to know quite a bit about these things, don’t you?" Axia tilted her head and looked at her, noncommittally responding.

Tangmo didn’t bother with her, but instead was carefully examining the patterns of the Rune while muttering calculations in her mind about the effects these patterns would produce, resembling the feeling of a programmer looking at a segment of code.

Not long after, she finally had a clear understanding and, satisfied, nodded and stood up from the ground.

"Well, have you figured anything out?" Axia asked curiously.

"This Magic Array is essentially just one for amplifying power; it won’t produce any magical effects with attributes. I’m guessing that’s correct, right?" Tangmo asked, pointing at the Magic Array on the ground and looking confidently at Axia.

At her words, Axia’s originally composed face showed signs of astonishment. After a long pause, she finally recovered and said sheepishly with a smile, "You are indeed no ordinary person. If you’re not from the Church Court, then who is your teacher?"

Instead of answering her question, Tangmo pointed at the Magic Array and continued, "The secret to this Magic Array producing two entirely different effects must be in those few external Runes or Magic Arrays, right?"

"Continue," Axia said, unfazed.

"The essence of this amplifying Magic Array is a Passive Array, but the externally connected Magic Array is Active. So when we entered just now, you secretly activated the external Active Array. Then, when we accidentally triggered this Passive Array, it activated and amplified the effects of the Active Array, blasting us with an outpour of chill air. At the same time, it made us mistakenly think this was an ice-based magic trap," Tangmo elaborated.

"Brilliant, absolutely brilliant, to have guessed the trap I set," Axia couldn’t help but clap her hands, "Now, I’m really curious as to who you are and how you know so much about magic. Or are you, perhaps, from the Church Court?"

"My name is Tangmo. I am not from the Church Court!" Tangmo replied indifferently.

"Tangmo, what an odd name..." Axia narrowed her eyes upon hearing her name.

"But to return to the previous topic, why did you design such a complex Magic Array?" Tangmo couldn’t help asking.

"It’s not that complex," Axia said, spreading her hands, "It’s just a safety device after all, since this is my home. It wouldn’t make sense to create a trap that I would trigger every day, would it?"

"So..."

"So as long as I don’t activate the external Magic Array, the Passive Array on the ground won’t be able to function," Axia explained while stepping a few times on the Passive Rune on the ground, "This Array mainly amplifies the effects of an external Magic Array. If the external Magic Array isn’t activated, then this one can’t activate either. Typically, I only activate the external Magic Array when I leave home, otherwise, it’s deactivated. After all, even though I am a Mage, I can’t withstand magical attacks."

Axia’s communicative ease caught Luo’er by surprise; from Eve’s descriptions, Axia had always been solitary, dwelling deep in the mountains. Spending years in such isolation, most would probably lose the ability to speak. But judging from her conversation, her speech was smooth, showing no signs of being someone who lived in seclusion for over a decade.

Once the room had warmed up, Axia placed her rifle against the door and began picking up the small objects scattered all over the floor. Seeing this, Luo’er also stepped forward to help her clean up, and the group spent quite some time tidying up the disordered room.

"Thank you, everyone," Axia said, taking a kettle from the fireplace and setting out a plate and several metal cups, pouring a cup of steaming beverage for her arriving guests.

Luo’er politely accepted the cup, and then took a deep breath. The drink had a faint aromatic scent and was brownish-yellow in color; from this standpoint, it resembled tea.

However, Luo’er also knew it definitely wasn’t tea. Since tea leaves were a luxury item in the trade between the two realms, Earthlings counted on it to earn gold, so it was unlikely that the commoners of the Otherworld could afford to drink tea.
