Chapter 877: Chapter 870: Evolution Speed
It was precisely because of the factors above that today’s situation with Night Elf mixed-blood nobility was brought about. After all, for magic families, how to pass on this magical aptitude is a very important matter.
The Uzistas Family, a lineage of military officers, also spared no effort in sending Feliz to the Sacred Heart Magic Academy, which shows just how important this magical qualification is to a noble family.
Furthermore, the closed and conservative nature of the Wood Elves and Snow Elves led to prejudices against these two Elf groups by other races. Generally, the Human Race considered mixed-bloods of Wood Elves and Snow Elves to be the progeny of promiscuity, and such offspring, even if they possessed genius-level magical aptitudes, were, in principle, not considered for enrollment in the Magic Academy.
And it was precisely because of this discrimination against Wood Elves and Snow Elves that the Human Race could only pin their hopes on the Night Elves. After all, the Human Race was more accepting of the Night Elves compared to the former two Elf groups.
Earth scientists made a significant discovery in their investigation and research into the Elf Race: some Night Elves, in order to adapt to this situation of contact with other races, had evolved an adaptability specifically aimed at addressing the Human Race’s concerns about the Elf Race.
It has been previously mentioned that the offspring of Elves will definitely be Elves, with the Elf gene being exceptionally dominant, controlling most appearance-related genes which are dominant. Their offspring will have very obvious Elf characteristics, which is also why other races are reluctant to accept the Elf Race.
According to research by Earth scientists, a fairly significant genetic mutation has occurred in Night Elves who have been in long-term contact with the Human Race. Specifically, the mutation has weakened the dominant gene’s control over appearance, giving their offspring a considerable chance of not inheriting the characteristic features of the Elf Race, thus perfectly circumventing the other races’ concerns about Elves.
Research indicates that such mutations occurred at least a thousand years ago, which surprised Earth’s scientists and made them hesitant to believe in such rapid genetic changes.
Indeed, the evolution of a species is a very lengthy process, and based on evolutionary experience, a thousand years is simply too short.
Moreover, since Elves generally have a long lifespan and can often live beyond a thousand years, this means that the genetic mutation occurred only between the passing of two generations, which is the most astonishing aspect.
Why is this surprising? Let’s take a simple example. Suppose humans learned that Earth would be submerged in floodwaters by 2012, and survival would require adaptation to aquatic life.
If humans had Night Elf-like genetic mutations, then by around 2020, newly born humans would basically be capable of surviving in seawater. Around 2100, after the disappearance of Earth’s first generation, humans would be fully adapted to aquatic life, ensuring the continuation of civilization’s flame.
And such changes would occur in less than a hundred years; the speed of such evolution is akin to riding a rocket, even much faster than nuclear radiation, which is why Earth’s scientists are astounded.
On Earth, concerns about the dominance of Elf genes also exist, which is why the Elf Planet Project has yet to be initiated. If Earth’s scientists could decipher the cause of the genetic mutations in those Night Elves, it might significantly accelerate the progress of the Elf Planet Project.
"If we assume Tana and Xiapei Kam are real, does that mean that the conflict within the Elf Race is, to some extent, a struggle between these two gods? In that case, what kind of relationship do they have?" Cheng Ziang couldn’t help but ask.
"This concept of gods, I always find hard to believe, yet there’s no way to explain many anomalies," Luo’er shook his head, frowning, "I can understand the existence of Fula, but I struggle with the concept of the soul. If Tana and Xiapei Kam really exist, then did the real world give birth to them, or did they create the subjective world?"
"The ecstasy of idealism..." Hu Daoke murmured, unable to restrain himself.
"I don’t think the world created by the gods of Otherworld is subjective; it should be objectively existing," Baiyue pondered," because if this were not the case, the gap between Earth and Otherworld would be too vast. Earth is a materialist world, while Otherworld is a subjective world created by gods. Such a statement is hard to believe. If Otherworld was truly created by gods, then why didn’t they protect the people of Otherworld who believed in them when Earth invaded?"
"Perhaps only the Elf Race has the existence of gods," Ziang suggested, furrowing his brows.
"Now that’s absurd," Luo’er laughed, "If only the Elf Race could be protected by gods, then why aren’t Elves the most dominant race in Otherworld? Given the protection from gods, Elves should be unstoppable in Otherworld. Why was the Aud Empire able to easily break through the fortress of the North Territory and subjugate the Snow Elves for centuries?"
Luo’er’s words once again plunged everyone into silence. Indeed, if Otherworld was created by gods, then why would they allow Earth to invade, unless they knew Earthlings couldn’t control Otherworld?
If Otherworld exists objectively, and gods were programs created by someone, then who created them? If it was the Ancestors, then what was their purpose for creating them?
Tangmo looked at Eve, who had been silent for a long time, and couldn’t help but ask, "Why were you so nervous when I asked my question earlier?"
"Eh, am I nervous?" Eve lifted her head, her eyes widening with panic as she looked at Tangmo. Her gaze had already betrayed her inner thoughts.
"It’s written all over your face," Tangmo stared at her and asked, "Are you hiding something from us?"
"No, nothing at all," Eve blinked rapidly, forcing a smile as she spoke.
"Be honest," Tangmo said with furrowed brows, "We’re entrusting our lives to you on this trip to the Snow Domain. Your behavior only adds to our distrust of you."
"This..." Eve lowered her head, gently biting her lip. After a long hesitation, she finally lifted her head, her expression flickering, and asked, "If, if I tell you, you won’t..."
"It’s okay, if there’s anything, just say it. We can discuss it together," Luo’er said in a soft, comforting voice.
"Actually, actually," Eve swallowed, then looked at the others somewhat guiltily and said carefully, "The Snow Elf elder I’m taking you to see is, is..."
"Is what?" Tangmo asked with furrowed brows, quite unsatisfied with her hesitancy.
"That elder believes in Xiapei Kam..." Eve stammered out.
"Pfft, it’s just a matter of faith? I thought it was something serious," Hu Daoke said in disappointment.
"You, you don’t..." Eve widened her eyes, looking at them cautiously and asked.
"So you think we all worship Tana?" Cheng Ziang asked.
"Heretics are scarier than heathens..." Eve pursed her lips, remaining noncommittal in her response.
"We’re from Earth, what we believe in is Materialism," Cheng Ziang shrugged and said.
"But Luo’er..." Eve looked at Luo’er.
"I am also a Materialist, I don’t believe in ghosts and gods," Luo’er replied indifferently.
"But you’ve seen Tana..." Eve asked, puzzled.
"Having seen her doesn’t mean I’ll believe in her," Luo’er sighed, then looked at her and said, "The reason you don’t understand the topic we were just discussing is probably because you assumed that we all believe in ghosts and gods."
"Isn’t that the case?" Eve asked curiously.
"I think I can understand her feelings now. Discussing the rationality of gods’ existence in front of someone who believes in them must really sound like gibberish to her," Cheng Ziang shook his head as he spoke.
"But this leads to a problem," Baiyue asked Eve calmly, "Luo’er is troubled by Tana, and yet the Snow Elf elder you speak of believes in Xiapei Kam. How can you be so sure she has a way to solve Luo’er’s problem?"
"Eh..." Eve was taken aback for a moment, then stuttered out, "Ah, Aunt Axia used to worship Tana and later converted to Xiapei Kam, so she has studied both deities, perhaps she can relieve Luo’er of his trouble..."
