Chapter 86 - 82: New Task

Chapter 86: Chapter 82: New Task

"The group stayed in the village for about a week. According to the daily messages they received from Headquarters, by the time they left, Odelanqi was in utter chaos. The Church Court was conducting thorough investigations everywhere for privately hoarded weapons, arresting many nobles under the charge of weapon hoarding and locking them up in prison.

However, the attitude of Gudelv I, the King of Odelanqi, was strange. He seemed to turn a blind eye to his subordinate nobles hoarding weapons. Although he repeatedly claimed to assist the Pope in investigating the matter, his claims were merely lip service and didn’t result in much action. In contrast, the Judgement Legion, usually in charge of prosecuting heretics, was making frequent moves and continuously arresting nobles proven to have hoarded weapons.

Luo’er knew that they were undertaking commissioned tasks during this time, which actually served as a way for them to leave Odelanqi and lay low, so they wouldn’t be caught by the Church Court. Otherwise, they would run into significant problems.

Therefore, during this time, Luo’er and his team lived quite comfortably. Due to the civil strife on the Kabarguru Peninsula, Luo’er gave up his plan to enter the peninsula through the Sunset Fortress and chose to stay in Meila Village. Officially, they were investigating the Sub-beastmen, but in reality, they were allowing the team members to slack off.

"Set up the gun, the target is 300 yards, set the scale!" At the newly repaired wall of the village, Hu Daoke was instructing the trainee guards on how to aim and fire their rifles.

They set up their rifles in the gaps of the wooden wall and took aim. Upon hearing Hu Daoke’s order, they readjusted their scales. At a distance, objects were set up every 100 yards, with wooden targets stuck into them, serving as targets for their shooting practice.

They didn’t have much ammunition, but according to Luo’er’s viewpoint, these novices needed to at least use up about 150 rounds of ammunition each to barely qualify. Otherwise, even if they were given more ammunition, they would only fire blanks.

Due to the ammunition constraint, live-fire exercises were exceptionally precious. All the trainee guards cherished this shooting opportunity.

Hu Daoke, who was initially frolicking with the village children, was called back by Luo’er, which irked him a bit. The children who were playing with him also gathered around curiously to watch their shooting practice.

"Ready, fire!" Hu Daoke covered his ears and gave the order loudly.

"Bang, bang, bang....." More than a dozen rifles fired simultaneously; the considerable recoil left every novice who just fired feeling uncomfortable. Some were even jolted off the platform by the recoil. The children were scared off by the loud gunshots and scattered screaming.

"Who missed the target?" Hu Daoke looked through his telescope and asked loudly.

Everyone remained silent.

He moved to a young guard and questioned him in a staring manner, "What range did I ask you to shoot at?"

"3, 300..." The guard stuttered in reply.

"What’s your rifle sight set to?" Hu Daoke pointed at his rifle and asked.

"300...2...200" The guard was intimidated by his aura, shakily looking at the sight of the rifle in his hand, and then stuttered in reply.

"I told you to shoot at 300 yards, but you set it to 200 yards. Did you not hear, or what, can’t you read Otherworld’s numbers?" Hu Daoke said loudly.

"Little Ke has such a hot temper, I will go and console him." Tangmo, who was watching their training from a distance, couldn’t help but comment.

"It’s fine," Luo’er reached out and held her back, "let him train them, newbies learn through scolding!"

"When we were learning, you weren’t so harsh." Tangmo stopped and said as she looked at him.

"That’s why you all were so lame." Luo’er held his forehead and laughed.

"Where were we lame? Everyone was very good!" Tangmo puffed out her small face.

"By the way, Luo’er, what did you say to Yue’er the other day?" Tangmo suddenly thought of this and asked.

"About Yue’er’s background, we probably met when we were young." Luo’er scratched his head and answered.

"No wonder you two seem like childhood sweethearts." Tangmo squinted her eyes and said sourly.

"We just met once," Luo’er said laughingly and helplessly, then he put on a serious face and continued, "I asked the village chief about some things that might be related to Yue’er."

"What things?" Tangmo asked.

"The village chief has a daughter named Aniya, her ears are exactly like Yue’er’s." Luo’er looked around and then whispered.

"You mean?" Tangmo was surprised to the point she almost yelled out.

"Yes," Luo’er nodded seriously, "Yue’er could likely be Aniya’s child, which means she is the village chief’s granddaughter."

"Did you... did you tell Yue’er about this?" Tangmo asked with a shocked look on her face.

"These are just my personal speculations, we must verify them, it would be quite embarrassing if we guessed wrong," Luo’er shrugged and said.

"So what you’re saying is, we keep Yue’er in the dark about this for now?" Tangmo lowered her voice and asked.

"Hmm," Luo’er nodded, "Let me figure this out first, then I’ll explain it to Yue’er. Let’s not disturb her with it at this point."

"Hmm, I understand." Tangmo nodded, then, as if reminded of something, she made a face and quietly murmured, "It’s nice, even Yue’er can find her family."

"Didn’t you say that once I find my mother, you want her to be your mother too?" Luo’er looked at her and asked.

"Right", Tangmo blinked, suddenly smiled, and asked Luo’er, "So what kind of relationship do you hope your mother will have with me, as a daughter or as..."

"Ah, this..." Luo’er scratched his head awkwardly, not knowing what to say.

Tangmo, wearing a sly smile, stared at him, waiting for his reply. Suddenly, she felt a sensation on the back of her hand and couldn’t help but change her expression.

"What’s wrong?" Luo’er noticed her sudden change and asked with concern.

"It’s a magical message!" Tangmo said.

"Oh." Luo’er sighed with relief, every day they keep in touch with headquarters, so he didn’t think much of it.

Tangmo transferred the message onto a piece of paper, glanced at it, and her expression turned even more serious. Luo’er felt something was off, so he moved forward and asked, "What’s up?"

"Message from headquarters, new mission!" Tangmo said seriously.

"Let me see!" Luo’er reached out for the paper, read it, and immediately frowned.

"Moumou, gather everyone, we’re preparing to move out!" Luo’er ordered.

"Hmm, noted!" Tangmo nodded and ran off.

Before long, the five-member squad was assembled. Luo’er sent away the onlooking children and began reading out the new mission from headquarters.

"Headquarters need us to investigate the movement of the Odelanqi army," Luo’er addressed the group, "Latest intelligence indicated that due to the domestic insurrection by civilian militias in the Masaya Kingdom, the entire kingdom is exhausted from dealing with the internal strife. As a result, King Gudelv I of Odelanqi has agreed to dispatch troops to Masaya. At the same time, since the Church’s Masaya division is unable to resist the rebels, the Church also plans to dispatch a new Mage legion to Masaya to maintain stability and suppress the rebellion. Our task is to find out just how many troops they have sent to Masaya."

"Why do we care how many troops they’ve sent?" Hu Daoke asked, puzzled.

"They’re probably concerned that they might secretly deploy their forces near Yazhi City to ambush Earth’s forces," Luo’er analyzed.

With the preparation of the third Otherworld War entering a critical stage, the Earthlings are particularly sensitive to the engagement of Otherworld’s military.

In the second Otherworld War, the earthlings, believing in their advanced tactics that outclassed the Otherworld by a century, rashly advanced tens of kilometers in the Battle of Yazhi City, only to be encircled by the Otherworld forces, causing the entire vanguard of the United Nations army, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, to be annihilated.

Such a catastrophic failure forced the earthlings to reassess the Otherworld’s military. Therefore, they are particularly interested in the movements of the Otherworld’s armies.

They needed to grasp the number of Otherworld soldiers, understand their movements, and know the deployment of each squad in order to ensure that the Otherworlders were not scheming against them.

If Odelanqi and the Church secretly deployed their forces near Yazhi City under the guise of suppressing the Masaya rebellion, they would be the first to strike when the Earth’s military returned. The earthlings couldn’t afford another loss, or rather, the UN Security Council couldn’t afford to lose any more men. If the war fails again, they would have a total fallout with the Otherworld, no longer adhering to the fragile peace agreement.

"So what do we do specifically?" Cheng Ziang asked a crucial question.

Luo’er pondered for a moment, and then slowly said, "First, we must confirm whether Odelanqi has indeed dispatched troops to Masaya. Second, we need to figure out how many Mage legions the Church has dispatched to its Masaya division, and whether those legions have actually all arrived in Masaya to suppress the rebellion."

"Speaking of which, has Odelanqi settled down now?" Tangmo suddenly thought of something and couldn’t help but ask.

It’s been almost a month since the last debacle they caused, and they aren’t clear about the current situation in Odelanqi. According to headquarters, the Church’s investigation is still underway, but not as aggressively as before, so they should be able to return.

The best way to investigate the movement of the Odelanqi army is to go to Holy Heart City, because only the troops there are directly commanded by King Gudelv, and the king can’t deploy the troops of other earldoms without the intelligence network knowing.

Therefore, their target can only be Holy Heart City, to investigate the movement of the King of Odelanqi’s direct troops and track their final location. This should be relatively easy, since even the most covert military maneuvers are likely to be detected by others. What’s more difficult is investigating the movement of the Church’s Mage Legions. That’s currently their toughest challenge.
