Chapter 839: Chapter 832: Remedial Measures
"Are you serious?" Cheng Ziang lifted his head and asked.
"What do you mean?" Yalunte was taken aback, not expecting Cheng Ziang’s attitude to change so quickly.
"What you just said," Cheng Ziang said.
"Of course, I’m serious," Yalunte nodded somewhat puzzledly.
Hearing his words, Cheng Ziang pushed him away forcefully, then sniffed, glaring at him angrily and cursed, "Dumb straight man, no wonder your son doesn’t recognize you!"
"What do you mean?" Yalunte was startled by his attitude and had no idea why Cheng Ziang suddenly got angry.
"Why would you even think that way, despite being someone who has practiced Tai Chi, don’t you know the old saying, ’A dog does not disdain a poor home, a son does not find his father ugly’?"
"What does that mean?" Yalunte asked blankly.
"Forget it," Cheng Ziang glanced at him and eventually bowed his head helplessly, cursing with regret, "You’re making me confused with anger!"
Watching Cheng Ziang angrily scolding himself, Yalunte felt a sense of warmth from the bottom of his heart for some reason and couldn’t help but curve his lips into a smile. But soon after, he became sighing again.
"What’s wrong?" Hearing his sighs, Cheng Ziang asked nervously.
"It’s nothing..." Yalunte said, turning his head to look in a certain direction, then muttered to himself, "It looks like they are going to find out about this soon."
Back on Luo’er’s side, just as Wang Xu had gathered everyone in the conference hall, a subordinate hurried over and whispered a few words into his ear. Hearing his subordinate’s words, Wang Xu’s warm expression immediately turned solemn.
"Are you sure?" Wang Xu asked.
"Sure!" The subordinate nodded.
"I see. You may leave," Wang Xu nodded solemnly and then faced everyone again, saying with a straight face, "You all wait here until everyone arrives, then we’ll start the meeting. Luo’er, come with me."
"Oh!" Luo’er complied, not sure what had happened, but he had a feeling that something was amiss. So, he extricated himself from Tangmo’s entanglement and followed Wang Xu’s steps out of the conference room.
The two of them walked through the corridors and finally arrived at Wang Xu’s office. On the desk, there was a game of Chinese chess, a remnant game from when Wang Xu and Li Si played to pass time during a dull moment.
Upon entering the office, Wang Xu made a gesture without turning his head. Seeing the gesture, Luo’er nodded understandingly, then turned and closed the door of the office.
"Luo’er, let me ask you," Wang Xu turned around, leaned against his desk, and looked at him earnestly with folded arms, "About Cheng Ziang and Yalunte, do you guys already know something? Answer me!"
"I..." Luo’er’s gaze became evasive before he shifted his eyes away, hesitatingly speaking with his head lowered.
"Tell the truth," Wang Xu took a deep breath, then continued, "I can tell if you’re lying or not the moment I hear it."
"Mr. Yalunte and Ziang... are they father and son?" After hesitating for a while, Luo’er finally mustered the courage to ask.
"It seems like you’ve figured it out, so Cheng Ziang must know it already, right?" Wang Xu asked, shaking his head in resignation.
"He..."
"The two of you always share everything, don’t tell me that only you knew about this!" Wang Xu interrupted him, saying coldly.
"Then why did you keep it from him?" Now that the truth had come out, Luo’er no longer held back but asked with a frown.
"There’s naturally a reason for keeping things from him," Wang Xu replied.
"Don’t give me that," Luo’er said irritably and then continued to stare at Wang Xu, "Tell me the truth if you still consider me one of your closest confidants."
Faced with Luo’er’s attitude, Wang Xu was caught off guard for a moment. He opened his mouth and, after a deep sigh, he asked, "You should know who Cheng Ziang’s mother is, right?"
"Yes, Princess Lin Fiollant of Odelanqi," Luo’er nodded and answered.
"Cheng Ziang’s uncle is the current king of the Odelanqi Kingdom. Why we’ve been keeping it from him, I think you’ve already guessed," Wang Xu said.
"I want you to tell me personally!" Luo’er said bluntly.
"You, sigh..." Wang Xu shook his head and then confessed, "Cheng Ziang’s political value is not less than yours, in fact, it’s much higher. You at least have a sister as a backup, but Cheng Ziang is Princess Lin’s only son. If anything were to happen to him, nobody could bear the responsibility."
After pausing, he continued, "Right now, we’ve finally taken control of the northeastern part of Aels Continent and extended our influence into Ilanadale to the south. But even to this day, we still can do nothing about Odelanqi, so..."
"So..." Luo’er quickly stepped forward, reached out to pick up the marshal from the chessboard on the table, and pressed it down on the opposing general. After making this move, he turned to Wang Xu and said, "You want to use Ziang to control Odelanqi?"
"It’s the worst strategy. If things in Odelanqi get out of control, we might have to intervene militarily using Cheng Ziang’s name to ensure our core interests aren’t threatened," Wang Xu said truthfully.
"Why do you always like to use such despicable methods?" Luo’er asked in disbelief as he looked at him.
"Military is an extension of politics, and most politics are despicable. Therefore, politicians usually have thicker skins than ordinary people," Wang Xu answered frankly.
Luo’er glanced at him and was at a loss for words for a moment, so he propped himself on the office desk, frustrated and sighing heavily.
"Luo’er," Wang Xu turned around, put his hand on Luo’er’s shoulder, and whispered in his ear, "Now that you’re aware of this matter, I need you to keep Cheng Ziang in check, don’t let him do anything rash. You should understand by now, his value is no less than yours. If anything happens to him, all our talk would be pointless, and you would still be recalled to Earth. This is a piece of advice, but it’s also a warning."
"What do you expect me to do, monitor him, put him under house arrest?" Luo’er asked without turning his head.
"Whatever works. You two are good brothers; you can communicate this among yourselves. I believe you can reach a reasonably good compromise. All I ask is that his actions do not affect your upcoming missions. Otherwise, don’t blame me for being heartless; you’ll just have to obediently wait for your recall to Earth," Wang Xu said.
"Are you threatening me?" Luo’er turned and looked at him.
"Why would I threaten you? As I said, this is advice and a warning. Don’t come blaming me if something happens because you weren’t alerted in advance," Wang Xu said.
"How am I supposed to talk to him now, how am I supposed to face him?" Luo’er sighed.
"How you handle it is your business. I can pretend I know nothing about it, but I absolutely cannot allow Cheng Ziang to act recklessly. Luo’er, whether it’s a threat or a heart-to-heart, stabilize Cheng Ziang, don’t let him go astray. You are both my subordinates and my students; I don’t want to see you go down the wrong path and end up in opposition to headquarters," Wang Xu spoke earnestly.
It seemed as if Luo’er heard a pleading tone in Wang Xu’s voice. He glanced at him and then lowered his head, sighed deeply, and nodded, "I understand..."
"I’m sorry, we really did wrong in this matter. If possible, please choose a channel to apologize to him on my behalf. We didn’t mean to keep him in the dark," Wang Xu said with an apologetic face.
Hearing his words, Luo’er didn’t immediately respond, but fell into deep thought. Then, he raised his head and, frowning, asked Wang Xu, "Tell me, within the Advance Team, have you ever trusted anyone besides me?"
"Yes!" Wang Xu nodded without hesitation.
"Ha..." Luo’er let out a derisive smile, "So should I consider it an honor?"
"At the very least, at one time, it was," Wang Xu said, pursing his lips.
