Chapter 802: Chapter 795: Pretending to Be a Ghost
"Fula, are you asleep?" After a moment of concentrated observation, Luo’er felt somewhat uneasy and decided to send Fulajie’er out for reconnaissance.
"I don’t need to sleep." As the voice sounded, the figure of Fulajie’er appeared beside Luo’er.
In the dim light, Luo’er could see her form made up of gentle light, like a little elf descending upon the Earth in the dead of night. She radiated a soft white light that wasn’t blinding but instead gave off a halo of light around her.
"Sorry, I almost forgot." Luo’er scratched his head, speaking apologetically.
"No, it’s okay..." Fulajie’er vigorously shook her head, a faint smile appearing on her face.
Luo’er’s concern about whether she was asleep clearly showed he still regarded her as a living person, not just a ghost that could be used, and this inexplicably warmed Fulajie’er’s heart.
"Fula, go see what’s happening, I keep feeling there’s something odd going on," Luo’er instructed her.
"Eh, but if I go over there, won’t you be in danger without my patrols here?" Fulajie’er said with some concern.
"Don’t worry, we’ve got Feng here, it’ll be fine, and besides, we’re not easy to deal with, are we?" Luo’er said, comforting her with a smile.
"Then I’m going, you guys be sure to stay safe," Fulajie’er said, then vanished instantly, only leaving behind a halo of light that hadn’t yet had time to dissipate.
"Feng, go back to the bed and lie down, get up again only if someone approaches." After thinking for a moment, Luo’er decided not to be overly cautious. Not to mention that they were armed, just having Feng and Fulajie’er around ensured that the enemy couldn’t surprise them.
"Oh!" Feng complied with Luo’er’s command. Upon hearing it, he went back to his bed to lie down, placing his long knife at his side.
Luo’er also leaned his rifle back against the bed and lay down, squinting his eyes as he carefully listened for any sounds from outside.
The room quickly became quiet; all that could be heard was Hu Daoke’s steady snoring. It was a marvel how the fellow could sleep at a time like this.
About ten minutes later, the clamor outside finally started to fade and the area outside quieted down once more.
With Feng there, Luo’er didn’t need to worry about his own safety. What he pondered now was what exactly happened outside—why would people choose to fight in the middle of the night, even going as far as to use firearms.
He struggled to figure it out, and now could only wait for Fulajie’er’s reconnaissance report. It had to be said that in times like this, Fulajie’er’s ghostly nature was incredibly convenient—she was practically a living ghost detector.
Shortly after the noise had settled back into silence, Fulajie’er finally arrived belatedly, laboriously absorbing atmospheric magic to reconstitute her body. Although she liked to directly utilize atmospheric magic to reform her body, she was also very mindful about it; in dangerous times, she never used atmospheric magic for reformation but instead relied on the magic crystal energy provided by Luo’er and others, thus avoiding the risk of exposing her whereabouts with magical fluctuations.
"How was it, what exactly happened?" Luo’er asked eagerly.
"Well, I don’t quite understand what they wanted to do," said Fulajie’er, her brow furrowing involuntarily.
"Strange, is it?" Luo’er asked.
"Yeah," Fulajie’er nodded vigorously, then said seriously, "I saw about a dozen people, just hidden around the corner less than ten meters to the left of the inn’s exit, shouting and jumping around, occasionally firing a few shots into the sky."
"Are you sure you didn’t see it wrong?" Luo’er was taken aback by her report.
"Definitely not. I thought there was a fight, but when I got there, nothing of the sort was happening. These people were just hiding in the corner, shouting and firing into the sky," responded Fulajie’er earnestly.
"What’s going on here..." Luo’er took a deep breath, at a loss for what to say.
What these people were up to, stirring up noise in the middle of the night and firing guns—at random, no less. If they weren’t insane, then they must have had some purpose in doing so.
"Did you hear anything else?" Luo’er asked patiently.
"Mmm," Fulajie’er tilted her head in thought for a while, spun around in mid-air, then suddenly caught on and said seriously, "I think I heard them talking, but they were speaking in the Northern dialect, and they spoke so quickly that I didn’t catch it very clearly."
The so-called Northern dialect is actually just the Tasta language with a Northern accent. Fulajie’er said it this way because she is a Southerner and not accustomed to the Northern accent of the Tasta language.
Although Luo’er and his companions spoke Tasta as well, because the Otherworld Gate was located in Yazhi City at the junction of the central and Northern Three Kingdoms, the Tasta language they had learned on Earth had a more neutral accent, without the distinct Northern bias.
Moreover, Luo’er’s first language was taught by his mother, Nina, who was a Wood Elf from the South, so the Tasta language he learned from childhood had a Southern accent, firmly established. Even after he learned the Northern accent in Tasta, his accent was never as pronounced as that of others.
"What did they say?" Luo’er pressed.
"Mmm, it seemed like they were talking about, um, putting on a play for someone to see... something about support..." Fulajie’er replied with difficulty.
"Then I probably understand," Luo’er said, catching on after hearing Fulajie’er’s description and couldn’t help but let out a cold laugh.
"Eh, understand what?" Fulajie’er blinked her big eyes and asked curiously, cocking her little head to the side.
"It’s a bit complicated to explain right now," Luo’er paused and continued, "In any case, these people are likely from the Hound Gang, and they are probably just trying to scare us."
"Why would they want to scare us?" Fulajie’er asked, puzzled.
"I’m not exactly sure myself; these are just my assumptions. If Azita comes to see me tomorrow, then I’ll probably know how to respond," Luo’er mused.
"Luo’er, you’re amazing!" Although she didn’t understand what Luo’er was talking about, Fulajie’er couldn’t help but praise him.
"You’re amazing too," Luo’er smiled at her and said softly, "If it weren’t for you, we probably wouldn’t have been able to sleep at all tonight."
"Ehe, ehehe..." Receiving Luo’er’s compliment, Fulajie’er couldn’t help but scratch her head shyly and kept wandering back and forth in mid-air to relieve the awkwardness of the moment.
In truth, Luo’er was spot-on. When it came to reconnaissance, Fulajie’er indeed played a significant role. It might even be said that it was because of her that the Advance Team had the opportunity to use some of the tactics they learned on Earth, which were incommunicable in the instant-message-lacking Otherworld.
"Alright, time to sleep, Feng, you should go to sleep early too," Luo’er let out a sigh of relief and then turned his head to say to Feng.
"Mhmm!" Feng nodded his head, then pulled the rough blanket back over himself and obediently closed his eyes.
"Luo’er, Luo’er, can I sleep with you?" Fulajie’er floated in front of Luo’er, asking with an expectant look on her face.
"You’re already sleeping with me, aren’t you?" Luo’er was a bit startled before responding truthfully.
He meant that the container for Fulajie’er’s soul was hanging in front of his chest, so actually whatever Fulajie’er wanted to do, he couldn’t really decide.
However, Fulajie’er evidently misunderstood Luo’er’s meaning. After hearing his words, she froze for a long time and then suddenly started to giggle foolishly.
"What’s with you, you seem a bit strange," Luo’er said, looking at her, obviously not yet realizing that his words had caused a misunderstanding.
"No, it’s nothing," Fulajie’er shook her head, then spun in place in mid-air, holding her hands behind her back, and looking at Luo’er she said, "I mean, can I sleep with you in my current form?"
"Whatever you want..." Luo’er blinked, immediately feeling a wave of heat rushing to his heart, his ears turning red in an instant.
"Ehehe, won’t my glow keep you from sleeping?" Fulajie’er wasn’t surprised at Luo’er’s reaction at all; he was the type of pure-hearted young man who would blush at the slightest tease.
Of course, whether he was pure-hearted was yet to be verified, and calling him a young man might be a stretch, as Luo’er was already of age, it was just that his Half-elf lineage made him appear somewhat youthful.
"No, it won’t..." Luo’er averted his gaze, saying with an embarrassed face.
