Otherworld Advance Team -
Chapter 666 - 659: Bombardment of the Giant Ship
Chapter 666: Chapter 659: Bombardment of the Giant Ship
The plan was set, and the Advance Team began to backtrack the way they came. Baiyue and others had already paved the shortest route for them which the Advance Team began to follow towards the main frontline in the mountains.
Luo’er ordered Fulajie’er to scout ahead non-stop, ensuring they would not be ambushed by the enemy while assigning Feng to lead the team, able to detect any movements within fifty meters instantly.
With their help, the Advance Team marched unimpeded and arrived near the ambushed main battlefront within two hours.
After the Advance Team attacked the main base, the enemy abandoned the frontline and moved most of the ammunition supplies. Numerous makeshift graves were piled up in the base, all containing soldiers lost in the Advance Team’s surprise attack.
The cleanup crew made the scene far more bearable for the Advance Team. When Feng had charged in alone before, she caused a bloody massacre, leaving bloody fragments and pools of blood all over. Regardless of the Advance Team’s resilience, such a sight would still cause a mental breakdown over time.
Soon, the Advance Team bypassed the main base and arrived at the north slope of the hill. Baiyue climbed a tall tree alone and began to observe the first base to be attacked through a telescope.
After confirming the presence of enemies on the base, she signaled Tangmo below. Receiving the signal, Tangmo calculated their current coordinates and sent the coordinate information to the airships in the sky, guiding them directly into bombing trajectory.
While Tangmo was contacting the airship fleet, Luo’er and his team had stealthily advanced about thirty meters from the base, ready to clean up the battlefield and look for any remaining enemy to capture once the base had been confirmed destroyed.
Tangmo’s message had barely been sent for ten minutes when everyone felt a vast pressure coming straight at them. The overcast sky began to reveal the steel outlines of airships.
It was a standard Ronisca air fleet, consisting of six airships. The two leading ones were High-peak class main battle airships, primarily for ground support. There were also two ground support ships on the flanks, equipped with transport planes and ground combat soldiers to seize ground-based fortifications.
Bringing up the rear were two supply vessels, still sporting formidable firepower, just comparatively less compared to the main battle and ground support airships.
Generally, the flagship of the Ronisca air fleet is a main battle airship, but some fleets use supply airships as flagships. Supply airships, often larger and heavily armored, are very suitable as flagships.
The six massive airships, all over a hundred meters long, slowly descended from the clouds in formation. These steel giants, incorporating the pinnacle of Ronisca’s technology, would astound anyone on Earth.
As the air fleet gradually descended from the sky, their size seemed to grow larger. Those on the ground, looking up at the sky, would find themselves suffocated by the oncoming pressure.
Enemy antiaircraft bases had begun to fire their 20mm antiaircraft guns. Tracer bullets, trailed by long tails, flew towards the airships, only to be deflected by the thick armor on the bottom and flung to the side.
The Advance Team’s speculations were correct; 20mm anti-aircraft guns were no match for the airships. Even the two 88mm high-explosive guns at the main frontline would struggle against the number of airships.
Ronisca’s airships are not the same as Earth’s bombers. Airships are essentially mobile steel fortresses in the sky with thick armor. Unless their core anti-gravity engines are damaged, it would be challenging to shoot them down. Most of Ronisca’s airship disasters happened due to anti-gravity engine failures.
Ignoring the attacks from the ground, the air fleet continued to descend and finally locked onto their bombing trajectory at 500 meters above the ground, adjusting their position. The doors on the ship’s bottom were opened, and barrels of massive guns protruded out, aiming at the ground.
"Fula, tell everyone that the bombing will commence soon!" Baiyue lowered the telescope, took out the signal flare given by Tangmo, and aimed it at the nearby antiaircraft fortification.
The signal gun that the Advance Team was equipped with was no ordinary signal gun; it was capable of firing signal flares up to three to four hundred meters without any trouble. At this time, the Baiyue’s ground-based anti-aircraft position was only a little over a hundred meters away from her.
She was accustomed to this and made a quick adjustment. Then, she took aim at the nearby anti-aircraft position and fired a shot. After the signal flare flew about fifty meters, it started to emit red light and smoke, and with a piercing shriek, it traced an arc in the sky before accurately landing in the center of the anti-aircraft position.
"Proceed with the bombing!" Tangmo said to himself as he sent the message into the sky, looking up at the airship fleet above.
After the bombing request was sent, there seemed to be a brief delay. Then, almost simultaneously, the main guns of the two main battle airships in the fleet roared at the ground below.
Boom! Boom, Boom!!!
After the main battle airships finished firing, the ground support airships on both flanks of the fleet started to fire, filling in the gaps between the main battleship’s volleys. Once the ground support airships finished, two supply airships behind the fleet also fired, covering the gaps left by the ground support airships.
Thus, the six massive warships in the sky fired in rotation, leaving almost no pauses. On the ground, the anti-aircraft position fell completely silent the moment the ships began to fire. Soon, explosions kicked up clouds of dust on the ground, causing the earth to shake. The deafening sounds of explosions and the dust spreading across the landscape made the forest resemble a fog-covered scene momentarily.
"Hey, aren’t we a bit too close?" Luo’er and the others hid, with Hu Daoke lying on the ground and covering his head as he asked loudly while hiding behind the downward slope of a river bank.
"What are you scared of? They’re already in bombing formation, you’re worried about friendly fire?" Cheng Ziang, feeling nonchalant due to the cover provided by the riverbank, sat on the ground, feeling the intense shaking beneath him while brushing dust off his head at regular intervals.
Luo’er tentatively stuck his head out and took a look. The forest was filled with smoke and dust; he could hardly see anything and could only hear wave after wave of violent explosions. The earth shook violently, and they could occasionally hear the sound of nearby trees being toppled by the vibrations and shockwaves.
The bombing disturbed the animals in the forest; flocks of birds flew out of the forest to escape the six enormous beasts in the sky. From time to time, wild animals rushed past them, fleeing in all directions.
Luo’er turned around, swallowing a mouthful of saliva, and pressed his hand to his ear. He saw Feng sitting beside him, her eyes wide and her hands wrapped around her knees.
Although her face didn’t show much emotion, Luo’er noticed that her body was subtly shaking. There was a hint of fear in her expression.
"Are you scared?" Luo’er asked, sitting down beside her.
"Scared?" Feng looked at him with her big eyes, tilting her head. Then, she nodded slightly.
"It’s okay, they are not our enemies." Luo’er tried to reassure her with a smile, and took her slender hand in his while comforting her.
It was only when Luo’er held her hand that he felt the depth of her fear. Her hand couldn’t stop trembling, and Luo’er could only soothe her by rubbing her palm with his thumb.
Feng stared at him, her large eyes filled with confusion. But Luo’er knew his comfort was working because, due to his efforts, Feng’s trembling gradually stopped.
Of course, that wasn’t solely due to his efforts; the cessation of the bombing might have been a factor too. As the number of explosions on the ground decreased, Feng finally stopped shaking.
