Otherworld Advance Team
Chapter 664 - 657: The Arrival of the Nightingale

Chapter 664: Chapter 657: The Arrival of the Nightingale

After receiving the letter, Luoer looked up at the sky, and soon, the silhouette of a transport plane appeared among the clouds. Perhaps for fear of ground anti-aircraft fire, the plane flew very cautiously, occasionally disappearing into the clouds.

Seeing this, Luoer pulled out a signal gun, loaded a blue flare, and fired towards the sky. The flare ascended slowly, but the plane seemed to have not yet noticed the signal from the ground and continued to fly cautiously.

Feeling helpless, Luoer fired a second flare. They were now about ten kilometers away from the anti-aircraft position, and since the enemy’s large-caliber anti-aircraft guns have been eliminated by the Advance Team, there was no need to worry much about the fire power from the ground.

The second flare finally caught the attention of the transport plane, which then began to adjust its course and fly toward the position of the Advance Team.

Perhaps still wary of anti-aircraft guns, the transport plane used a stall landing method, directly switched off the anti-gravity engine, and glided fast towards the Advance Team relying on the thrust of the plane and its own gravity, much like a meteor falling diagonally towards the ground.

When the plane was about a hundred meters from the ground, the pilot reactivated the anti-gravity engine, gradually reducing the falling speed of the transport plane, and finally regained control of the plane’s attitude. Then, they gradually reduced the power of the anti-gravity engine to ensure a slow descent.

Though these maneuvers might seem intimidating, they are actually standard for these pilots. Because almost the only air force in the Otherworld is Ronisca’s, these pilots are without a doubt among the most elite across the continent.

Under the pilot’s control, the transport plane slowly landed on an open area not too far from the Advance Team. As soon as the cabin door opened, a line of Dwarf soldiers with guns streamed out and immediately rushed towards the two injured Dwarf pilots.

Then, a woman in a cloak and a large brim pointed hat stepped out of the cabin. Because she had been indoors for a long time, her face was a bit pale and she wore large, gold-rimmed round glasses on her nose.

"Sister Nightingale!" Upon seeing the woman, Luoer couldn’t help but exclaim.

Hearing Luoer’s voice, Nightingale turned her head to look at him. A trace of a smile formed on her otherwise cold face, and then she walked towards them.

"Atten-hut!" Seeing Nightingale coming over, Luoer instinctively stood up straight and saluted her.

Although Nightingale wasn’t officially part of Headquarters, she had deep experience, having been with the command for its growth and development from the beginning. Even Wang Xu had to show her a great deal of respect. So even though she didn’t hold any rank or office, every member of the headquarters held her in high regard.

"Where’s Fula?" Nightingale glanced around and then looked at Luoer’s chest and asked.

"Uh, she’s out on a mission..." Luoer hesitated.

"You really know how to pick a time." Nightingale lowered her eyes and spoke without emotion.

"Sorry..." Luoer lowered his head.

"I’m not blaming you." Nightingale said, but she couldn’t help but sigh.

As Nightingale quieted down, the atmosphere on the scene suddenly got awkward. She had a sort of powerful aura that made everyone feel ill at ease when she stood there. Even Cheng Ziang, known for his composure, couldn’t help but pace around to ease his inner tension.

"On this mission, Major Zhuyan Yu and I will serve as liaisons and advisors from the headquarters. The Ronisca air fleet will assist you until the virus sample is found." Nightingale spoke seriously after a brief silence.

"Huh, Teacher Zhu is coming too?" Luoer was somewhat surprised to hear this.

"Yes, she’ll serve as an advisor, coordinating between you and the air fleet." Nightingale nodded.

Then, she signaled to Tangmo not too far away: "Girl, come over here."

"Wh-what do you need?" Tangmo approached hesitantly, asking in a nervous tone.

Amongst all the women Luoer knew, Nightingale was one of the few characters whom Tangmo did not dare offend. Compared to Nightingale, she felt completely inexperienced and naive. The latter’s overwhelming presence alone was enough to leave her breathless.

"Establish a messenger connection with me to communicate support messages." Nightingale disregarded her nervousness, reaching out her hand and spoke lightly.

"Eh, shouldn’t it be me instead?" Luoer asked, somewhat surprised.

Nightingale glanced at him, then explained, "You need to stay connected with Li Si and can’t modify the messenger connection at will. It will disrupt the affiliation. Once this mission is completed, the advance team has to return to the airboat headquarters and continue to follow his directions."

Tangmo placed her hand over Nightingale’s, and subsequently, Nightingale affixed a sticker onto the back of her hand. Upon peeling off the sticker, a complex rune was firmly adhered to her skin. Such a rune could not be removed except with a special solution.

Nightingale was one of the few in the Otherworld who mastered messenger magic. It was precisely because of this skill that the headquarters had decided to shelter her.

Due to the monopoly on magic in the Otherworld, most magical resources were in the hands of the Church Court. The south might be somewhat more tolerant, but the vast majority of those who commanded magic are also the nobility.

The current status of the Otherworld was somewhat similar to medieval Earth, where, in order to consolidate their rule, the privileged class monopolized the dissemination of knowledge and technology. Thus, when the two worlds first established contact over thirty years ago, the Otherworld was far behind Earth, be it in terms of politics, economy, or cultural life.

The very proposal to end the second Inter-world War came from Earth dwellers. Had Earthlings behaved as barbaric and unreasonable as the Otherworld dwellers back then, the war would have probably continued, and no near thirty-year-long period of peace would have been achieved afterward.

The deeper the contact between Earth and the Otherworld, the more Otherworld denizens started embracing Earth culture, and none more so than the Blaiqi people. These Otherworld merchants warmly welcomed every facet of Earth’s culture and philosophy, and are now the group with the highest cultural level in the whole Otherworld. They even take pride in referring to themselves as New Earthlings.

"The aerial fleet is currently on standby above the clouds. Once you are ready, send me a message, and the fleet will descend to bombing path to provide you with firepower support," Nightingale, checking Tangmo’s hand message, explained to Luoer in an unhurried tone.

"Oh, I see!" Luoer absentmindedly nodded and replied.

"Take care of yourself." Nightingale lifted her gaze to him.

"Eh...okay..."Upon seeing Nightingale proactively show concern, Luoer ended up being taken aback. Tangmo, standing aside, had loads of complaints but dared not voice them in front of Nightingale.

"You also need to take good care of Fula for me. Hence, take care. If anything happens to you, she will be distraught," Nightingale lightly stated, shifting away her gaze.

"Er, rest assured, I’ll take good care of her!" Misunderstanding her, Luoer’s tone became awkward.

"Alright then, if there is nothing else to report, I’ll be going. The headquarters have prepared some ammunition for you. Replenish what you need. We are awaiting your orders at any time." Without even waiting for Luoer’s response, Nightingale turned and headed straight for the transport plane.

By then, the dwarven soldiers had loaded their two injured companions onto the transport plane. Next, they brought out a wooden box and placed it in front of everyone. It contained ammunition and other supplies.

Watching the transport plane ascend into the sky, the tension lifted from Luoer’s heart, and he couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. Perhaps it was a common understanding; as the transport plane took off, everyone on the scene simultaneously breathed a sigh of relief.

No matter what, the casualties had been taken away by the aerial fleet; now the advance team’s actions wouldn’t be as difficult. Having to fight a war while accompanying two wounded was indeed very inconvenient.

Now, they just needed to wait for Baiyue’s reconnaissance team to return to devise the corresponding attack plan. With the aerial fleet now willing to descend to the bombing path to support the ground troops, the pressure facing the advance team was undoubtedly significantly eased.
