Chapter 626: Chapter 619: Delray’s Book of Prophecy
The room was filled with the scent of burning incense, a faint fragrance that immediately eased Luo’er’s nervous spirit. He took a deep breath and quietly looked at the old man in front of him. Even though the old man was blind, Luo’er knew that he was looking at him too.
Fulajie’er harnessed the surrounding magic power to appear, then sat on Luo’er’s neck, curiously sizing up the old man as she propped his head up. Upon sensing the fluctuation of magic power, the girl called Feng suddenly opened her eyes and raised her head. After glancing at Fulajie’er, she lowered her head again and fell silent.
Seeing Luo’er seated on the floor, the others were a bit flustered. They all turned their attention to Cheng Ziang. He shrugged casually and sat behind Luo’er. Seeing this, everyone else relaxed, sat down as well, but their weapons were always in their hands.
Cheng Ziang was well aware of the situation. In this state, they could only assume that the old man and the girl bore them no ill will; otherwise, no matter how much they struggled, they would not be able to withstand the girl, Feng.
This was probably the second time they felt such a sense of powerlessness since entering the Otherworld. The first time was when they faced the Judgement Legion in the fight for the Holy Sword.
"Before you start your questioning, may I ask you a few questions first to make you more willing to trust me?" Before Luo’er could say anything, the old man initiated the conversation.
"Please go ahead," Luo’er carefully watched him, but his tone was very respectful.
"You are not from this world, correct?" the old man calmly asked.
After a brief hesitation, Luo’er nodded and replied, "Yes."
"At the same time, you are not from that world either, right?" the old man continued.
"How do you know that?" Luo’er asked coldly.
The hybrid race was a mix of Earthlings and Otherworld inhabitants. In terms of lineage, hybrids neither belonged to Earthlings nor Otherworld inhabitants.
"Prophecy. The great prophet foresaw all of this," the old man answered.
"What exactly is this prophecy?" Luo’er couldn’t help but frown.
Both the girl and the old man emphasized prophecy, but until now, Luo’er hadn’t figured out whether prophecy was a specific thing or something else altogether.
"Have you heard of the ’Drexsita Prophecy Collection’?" the old man asked.
"Err..." Luo’er was momentarily rendered speechless.
"That is a forbidden book of the Church of Light, currently sealed in the grand library of the Holy City," Baiyue’s voice came from behind Luo’er. She was the one in the Advance Team who read the most books and could be considered as a walking library.
"Forbidden book?" Luo’er turned his head to glance at Baiyue, then went back to his thoughts.
The first time he heard the term ’forbidden book’ was related to summoning magic. The Church Court banned summoning magic to prevent mages from misusing it, thus associated books were labelled as forbidden.
"It’s not there anymore, or rather, it disappeared a dozen years ago." The old man said with a faint smile.
"Is the book of prophecies with you?" Luo’er asked, gazing at him.
"Of course," the old man nodded, then showed a smug expression, "Moreover, I’ve already completely deciphered it."
Luo’er didn’t know how to continue questioning because, in his subconscious, he didn’t find this so-called prophecy book reliable. According to the logic of Earthlings, a prophecy should be a prediction of future developments based on the current state. However, prophecies in the Otherworld were more literal – they simply told you what would happen at a specific time in the future.
For such unrealistic prophecies, Luo’er, a materialist by nature, was hardly willing to believe.
Seemingly sensing Luo’er’s disbelief, the old man gave a faint smile, before speaking, "Young man, don’t measure this world by the rules of your world. This world holds too many mysteries that can’t be explained by the science of your world."
"So, you believe that the prophecy is real?" Luo’er asked.
"Of course," the old man nodded slightly, "From the moment I opened the Book of Prophecy, I saw my future. For me, every day that follows is a countdown."
While speaking, he took out a polished wooden box from behind him and slid it in front of Luo’er, saying, "This is the Book of Prophecy. If you wish to look, I won’t stop you. But I must warn you that there is a price to pay for prying into the future."
"What is the price?" Luo’er couldn’t help but furrow his brows, looking at the wooden box in front of him.
"You’ll know once you see it," the old man said, a mysterious smile playing on his lips.
Gathering his courage, Luo’er slowly reached out, opened the wooden box, and found a thick book inside. The cover bore the words ’Book of Prophecy’, written in Gutasta language. He glanced at the old man, hesitated a few times, ultimately drawing back his hand without opening the book.
Seeing Luo’er’s action, the old man’s mysterious smile turned into one of confidence, as if he had already known that Luo’er wouldn’t open it.
"Did you anticipate that I wouldn’t open this book?" Luo’er asked, looking at him.
"Of course, all your actions, every single word you utter, are recorded in the Book of Prophecy. I am simply acting according to the laws set out in the Book of Prophecy," the old man said indifferently.
Luo’er watched the old man in silence. Suddenly, he quickly drew out his pistol from his waist, cocked it and pointed it at the old man’s forehead.
But evidently, the other party was faster. His arm hadn’t even fully extended before the muzzle hit something solid. Then, an invisible force assaulted him. Caught off guard, he was instantly knocked back and sent flying by this force.
"Luo’er!"
Luo’er’s actions were so fast and abrupt that the rest of the Advance Team couldn’t react in time. Seeing Luo’er flung back, they quickly got up from the ground, their guns pointed at the two individuals before them.
"Luo’er, are you alright?" Tangmo clumsily rushed to Luo’er’s side, holding him and asking anxiously.
"I’m fine, just got knocked back a bit, everyone lower your guns!" Luo’er waved his hand and returned his pistol to its holster.
He got up from the ground, then turned to look at the old man. The old man’s reaction was expected, yet surprising. He seemed calm, as if nothing had happened at all. Fortunately, he had tightly grabbed onto the sword hilt of a nearby girl, preventing her from drawing her long sword; otherwise, the entire Advance Team would have been in trouble.
"Did you also anticipate this?" Luo’er asked bitterly as he stood up from the ground.
"Of course, just..." the old man chuckled lightly, his face suddenly paling as he broke into a fit of violent coughing.
He gently pushed the girl’s long sword back into its sheath; the girl glanced at him, let go of her sword and lowered her head to meditate again.
After a bout of violent coughing, the old man slowly recovered, shaking his head with a bitter smile, saying, "I thought I could defy my fate, but it seems it’s impossible after all."
"What do you mean?" Luo’er walked up to the old man and knelt down again to ask.
"The Book of Prophecy foretells that I will fulfill my mission today and then leave this world. But don’t worry, you will learn everything you wish to know. And when you learn everything, my life will also come to an end," the old man explained.
"You... have you resigned yourself to your fate?" Luo’er asked hesitantly.
The old man let out a light laugh, shaking his head with a bitter expression, "These past few days, I felt my body was still very strong, thinking that I could hold on for a while longer. But you still did this. As expected, I ultimately can’t change my destiny."
Having said that, the old man began to cough violently once more, managing to murmur between his fits of coughing, "The sword of Feng, can’t be so easily sheathed..."
Watching him coughing, Luo’er stood there dazed for a while, then asked somewhat reproachfully, "Is this... my fault?"
