Chapter 610: Chapter 603: Replanning

"Alright, I agree with you!" Luo’er said with a smile.

"I knew you would," Fulajie’er floated onto Luo’er’s shoulder and sat down, then hugged his head, pressing her face into his hair, and mumbled with a gleeful smile, "I didn’t expect you to actually apologize to me over this, what a surprise..."

"Hmm, what did you say?" Even though they conversed through their souls, Luo’er still didn’t quite catch what she said.

"It’s nothing..." Fulajie’er sat up straight and gently stroked Luo’er’s black hair with an affectionate look on her face, a flicker of loss flashed across her face.

"If only I could touch you directly...that would be wonderful..." Fulajie’er closed her eyes and murmured with slight regret.

"What did you say, why can’t I hear it?" Luo’er raised his head, trying to look at Fulajie’er above him.

"I didn’t say anything, it’s a girl’s secret, you’re not allowed to pry!" Fulajie’er sprung up from his shoulder and floated in front of him as she spoke.

"Okay, I won’t ask then." Luo’er nodded in agreement.

"You truly have the foundation of a flirt..." Fulajie’er stared at Luo’er with a smile and couldn’t help but sigh.

"What?" Luo’er looked at her and took a moment to respond.

"Now I finally understand why so many girls are attracted to you." Fulajie’er floated back to his shoulder and sat down, speaking cheerfully.

"Why do you say that too..." Referencing this matter made Luo’er scratch his head in embarrassment.

After a day of resting in the airship’s dormitory, the group received news from the Church Court the next day. It was a casualty report from the Purification Legion.

According to the intel, well over half of the Purification Legion’s 500 soldiers were lost. This was after several deserters were retrieved and included in the headcount. A conservative estimate would put at least 200 casualties from this ambush, with most missing in action and their bodies unable to be located. Among these, at least 50 to 80 of the fallen were due to friendly fire, a tragedy indeed.

The result was simultaneously surprising and unsurprising to Luo’er. He found it unsurprising because he had roughly estimated that the Purification Legion would lose over half of their numbers in this operation. What shocked him was the number of soldiers who had fallen to friendly fire.

The Church Court’s initial response was out too. They simply penalized Carter slightly and ordered the soldiers in the Purification Legion to return for more training, before redeploying them back into the contaminated zone.

Luo’er was surprised by the Church Court’s decision. In his mind, the people of the Church Court were not so lenient. After months of hard training, Carter had lost half of the newly trained legion. If Luo’er were a high-ranking official in the Church Court, he’d certainly take repercussions against Carter first.

However, considering the current predicament of the Church Court, Luo’er thought the result was reasonable. The primary role of the Purification Legion was to deal with highly infectious corpse demons. If the Church Court’s other legions could take out the corpse demons, there would be no need for a new legion. Even the Purification Legion, fully equipped with Earth’s anti-chemical equipment, couldn’t ensure a hundred percent infection-free rate, let alone the other legions only equipped with gas masks.

Obviously, the urgency of dealing with the corpse demons had prevented the Church Court from taking a firm hand with Carter and his new legion. Instead, they ordered them to intensify training and prepare for the next assault.

Furthermore, to be fair, this incident couldn’t be entirely blamed on Carter; he was merely following Bishop Marlori’s orders. Actually, Marlori bore considerable responsibility for the failure of the mission. However, Marlori had high status within the Church Court. No one dared to challenge him, and he was still enjoying the conveniences provided by Earth’s technology on the airship.

As he was considered a VIP from headquarters, no one dared to make a fuss. They only dared to curse him behind his back. After all, they were speaking in Chinese, which Marlori couldn’t understand.

Not long after receiving news about the Purification Legion, Li Si called a meeting in his office to discuss their upcoming tasks. Luo’er’s words had given Li Si a lot of inspiration. He still believed it was important to use everyone’s initiative; absolute control should not be the norm.

"I’ve given it some thought, if we want to utilize the mobility and flexibility advantage of the Advance Team, having two squads acting simultaneously would be too crowded. It’s better if we operate separately," Li Si stated, looking at Luo’er and Murong before continuing, "I’ll rearrange it. Murong’s squad is new and doesn’t have enough combat experience in Otherworld, so I’ll deploy them as carefully as possible. Luo’er’s squad, on the other hand, has extensive combat experience, so I plan to use them as their strike-force."

"Agreed!" Luo’er nodded, expressing his approval of Li Si’s plan.

"Same here!" Murong glanced at Luo’er before nodding in agreement. He acknowledged the gap between him and Luo’er was inevitable and something he could not avoid.

"I’ve reevaluated our mission objectives, which mainly involves assisting the related research departments in studying epidemic prevention and control. Therefore, relying on the Church Court all the time isn’t necessary. It would be better if we acted independently."

Pausing for a moment, Li Si continued, "So this is what I’ve decided: Murong, your squad will be deployed as the containment team, whereas Luo’er’s squad will act as the recon team, infiltrating the epidemic area using aerial mobility. Once they’ve obtained the target samples, we’ll send the containment team to recover them."

"I agree with that!" Luo’er nodded.

"Me too," Murong replied.

"As the recon team, Luo’er’s squad will face more dangers, so you have to be extra careful," Li Si looked at Luo’er as he spoke.

"Don’t worry about us, Brother Li," Hu Daoke waved his hand and said nonchalantly, "We are professionals in this kind of work. We’ve grown accustomed to it, so don’t concern yourself."

"Well then, if there are any adjustments needed in terms of equipment and weapons, let me know now so I can arrange it for you," Li Si said after nodding his head.

"We might need to change our protective suits as they are not suitable for summer operations," Luo’er suggested.

"Hmm, okay. I’ll get it sorted out at the headquarters or check with the research department to see if they have anything suitable," Li Si responded with a nod.

"As for weapons," Luo’er began, "we primarily face three foes in the epidemic zone: Corpse Demons, Exotic Beasts, and Exotic Insects. The first, although unseen, seems manageable, but the latter two creatures are fast and have high mobility. Our traditional weapons might be insufficient to suppress them, so we need something more powerful."

"Like what?" asked Li Si.

"Shotguns," Luo’er replied, "In countries where gun ownership is legal, people prefer using shotguns for moving targets. This shows that these weapons have a high margin for error, so I believe it’ll be beneficial to equip shotguns as secondary weapons to deal with possible encounters with Exotic Beasts and Exotic Insects."

"You want to use shotguns as secondary weapons?" Li Si asked, furrowing his brows.

"Yes," Luo’er nodded, "We don’t necessarily have to fight the Exotic Beasts and Exotic Insects, but it’s always better to have an extra edge to avoid being cornered by these creatures."

"As secondary weapons, we might only be able to use short-barreled ones. I’ll see if I can get such guns, if not, I’ll have them sent from Earth," Li Si responded with a nod.

"Thank you for your trouble," Luo’er said respectfully.

"No problem, we’re all working towards completing our mission," Li Si replied with a wave of his hand.

"Additionally, considering our mission in the epidemic zone, we might need to equip silencers to avoid alarming the Exotic Beasts or the Insects and causing unnecessary trouble. So, we might need to prepare a few spare silencers," Luo’er paused before continuing.

"That’s not an issue. These tactical pieces of equipment are designated for you guys. You can have as many as you want!" said Li Si.
