Chapter 593 - 586: The Combat Power of a Knight
Chapter 593: Chapter 586: The Combat Power of a Knight
"Check your weapons and equipment again. We might be forced to face the enemy!" Luo’er said seriously.
Along with the roar, the scream of the horse and the knights echoed in the woods. The knights guarding the outskirts of the forest all set up thick shields, drew their swords, and prepared for the strike.
Next, a knight was thrown out of the woods, screaming and rolling to the front of the shield. The knight holding the shield quickly made way, and then dragged him in. Following that, a black shadow burst out of the woods and immediately attacked the shield formation. After this monster appeared, a host of dark figures rushed out of the woods, roaring and pouncing on the knights.
How to describe these monsters? They look a bit like sloths, but they are much faster. Also, they are hairless and their dark brown muscles are exposed, which can be easily mistaken for black at a glance.
Their claws are long and sharp, even over ten centimeters long. Waved around, they can easily tear a creature without any protection into two parts. They have wide, bloody mouths full of dark yellow fangs, dripping with saliva. Their throats are constantly emitting chilling roars and they hardly ever stop.
These are exotic beasts from another world. They lack wisdom and only follow their hunting instincts, killing all creatures they see. They carry a virus that can infect people, for which no cure has been found yet.
The exotic beasts roared, one after another pounced on the shield-holding knights. These knights showed no signs of retreating. Those holding the shields were at the forefront, while knights behind held spears, waiting for these monsters to impale themselves on them.
The first wave of attack by the exotic beasts began. They pounded on the shields one after another. Unlucky beasts directly hit the spears and were punctured. They let out painful roars, some spears even impaled two at once. Although these exotic beasts have a strong hunting instinct, they seem to lack intelligence and only know how to charge blindly without even attempting to flank the shield formation.
After the first wave of offense, the knights immediately mounted a counter attack. The advance team had always thought it was foolish for the Church Court’s army to reject Earth weapons. Especially after the Judgement Legion was defeated in the south, they were even more convinced. But only now, when they witnessed the strength of the Temple Knights in battle, did they understand why these people refused to accept earth-transformed reforms.
The knights, left hand holding their shields, were slamming them towards the exotic beasts. Such large, heavy shields were swung with such ease by these knights, that the impact of a single shield was enough to send an oncoming beast flying several meters.
A knight used his shield to fend off the frenzied attack of an exotic beast, then charged his sword into its belly twice in less than a second. The force of these blows was so strong that the handle of the sword sank in, with the blade protruding from the creature’s back.
In an instant, the exotic beast fell to the ground before it even had time to scream. It convulsed occasionally, and a large amount of blood oozed from its abdomen.
After repelling this wave of offense, the knights carrying spears behind also dropped their long spears, then drew their swords and pounced on the exotic beasts, without any fear. An exotic beast pounced in front of a knight, opened its huge mouth, and took a bite on the knight’s hand.
While the knight tried to withdraw his arm, he was crazily stabbing the chest of the beast with his long sword. A lot of thick blood spewed out from the chest of the beast. The knight’s arm in its mouth was wrapped in armor, which glowed when the beast bit down on it. It was the Rune Armor performing its role.
"My goodness!" Seeing the knights combat the exotic beasts, the members of the advance team felt their blood boiling. Hu Daoke couldn’t help praising their fight, his heart surging with admiration.
Soon, the knights had formed their line, turning the battle into one-sided slaughter. The ground was covered with the thick blood of the beasts. This blood was a dark brown and very thick. It was more appropriate to call it mucus rather than blood.
Just as everyone’s attention was focused on the battle between the knights and the exotic beasts, a beast’s roar was heard beside them. These creatures didn’t know how to conceal their tracks. Wherever their sound was heard, their presence was felt.
Two exotic beasts dodged the knight’s line and flanked, ready to attack the members of the advance team. Luo’er reacted first, quickly picked up his firearm, and aimed at the exotic beasts.
At close range, the exotic beasts were agile, but no matter how fast they were, they couldn’t outrun bullets, especially since they were charging straight ahead, leaving them no chance to avoid the bullets.
However, even so, Luo’er’s shooting accuracy was not up to par. He fired more than a dozen shots in quick succession and only about half of them hit the beasts. What’s more, because he fired too slowly, by the time he’d shot those bullets, the beasts had advanced more than ten meters and were quickly closing in on everyone.
At this point, everyone else reacted, quickly raising their guns and shooting at these two exotic beasts. Everyone else was using full-automatic mode, especially Hu Daoke’s light machine gun suppression. The bullets poured down on the beasts like rain, instantly enclosing them in a storm of steel.
Although not as effective as the shield, the stopping power of the 7.62 caliber bullets was still significant. Under everyone’s concentrated fire, the beasts managed to charge forward for less than ten meters before they fell to the ground halfway, leaving a trail of blood.
"My word..." Releasing the trigger, Hu Daoke finally breathed a sigh of relief, feeling his lingering fear.
"Everyone, stay alert and check your weapon’s ammo." Luo’er swallowed hard, his breathing grew rapid due to his quickened heartbeat. Taking the chance when no one was looking, he put the rifle’s safety on full-automatic mode.
His usual habit of self-restraint almost got him killed. Imagine if just now everyone had used semi-automatic fire, those two beasts would have likely rushed right up to them. Thinking of this, Luo’er was still quite glad that he hadn’t forcefully adjusted his team’s shooting mode.
"Fula, perform a patrol for any signs of danger!" Luo’er immediately ordered.
"Acknowledged, carrying out the order!" Fulajie’er responded and started to patrol around the advance team.
Upon seeing that the advance team had been attacked, an officer from the Temple Knights sent three knights over. Without any hesitation, they came before the fallen beasts, raised their swords, and stabbed them in their heads and hearts to make sure these monsters were dead.
"Are you all okay?" one of the knights asked as he ran over.
"We’re fine, thank you for your help," said Luo’er after letting out a sigh of relief.
The knight didn’t bother with pleasantries. After another glance at the group, he signaled his companions and moved on to the place where the beasts had attacked, attempting to look for any that might have escaped.
This was perhaps the first time Luo’er had felt such a sense of failure. They were equipped with the most advanced weapons from Earth, yet at this moment, they had to defer to them, and even rely on the protection of the knights, who they had once seen as primitive and backward.
The combat methods of the knights and beasts may seem outdated and inefficient, but they are extremely effective. The armor worn by the knights can protect them from the beasts’ attacks, while their weapons can effectively kill these monsters from another world. Coupled with the gas masks provided by Earth, these knights have almost no weaknesses when facing these beasts. There is no wonder why this camp needs the Temple Knights’ protection.
Pride goes before a fall. This saying couldn’t be more apt for Luo’er. They had always scorned the weapons of the Otherworld. As their equipment became more sophisticated, they even began to think they could dominate the Otherworld.
And so, everyone seemed to forget that they had once been unable to break through the armor of the Judgement Legion and had been chased around by them. They had almost been wiped out in the fight against Lipei and the mage.
While Earth’s weapons are certainly advanced, one must also consider the objective factors of the Otherworld. In this world, Earth’s weapons are weakened, while the weapons of the Otherworld can fully express their power due to their home field advantage.
This is an objective issue. If ignored, overly self-confidence could very easily lead to one’s downfall.
