Chapter 551: Chapter 544: Arriving at Divine Wood Town
Half a month later, the airboat finally reemerged above the river of Divine Wood Down. Princess Nina of the Elf Race and royals were there to welcome them, and curious elves gathered, once again, crowding the riverbank.
Before reaching Divine Wood Down, Li Si and others discussed and decided that the Judgement Legion will camp by the river, and they would prevent them from entering the town. Ilanadale and the Church Court had no diplomatic connections and neither party was fond of the other. Hence, inviting this group into the town might bring unexpected trouble.
As for the researchers and the girls, they were scarce resources at the headquarters and therefore deserved to be treated as guests. The mercenaries would stay on the airboat as safeguards. They had been living in the cabins of the airboat, unlike the others who had to be settled temporarily in warehouses.
Now, they planned to stay here only for a few days. After healing the wounded and replenishing their supplies, they would set off back to Yazhi City. On the other hand, the four men from Murong Squad would stay in Ilanadale for a while to train Ilanadale’s troops.
When the airboat was stable, Li Si led the group to the entrance to wait for the doors to open. Luo’er suddenly thought of something, called Luoya over, and grabbed her wrist before she could react.
"What are you doing?" Luoya asked, her face red and brows furrowed, looking at him.
"You’ll know when we get down," Luo’er replied with a smile, not revealing anything right away.
As the cabin door opened and air service personnel laid the connecting gangway, everyone disembarked and arrived ashore via the long pre-laid gangway.
"Greetings, Princess," Li Si said, bowing slightly as a sign of respect to Nina.
"The pleasure is mine, Mr. Li Si," Nina replied with a polite smile.
Lifting his head, Li Si couldn’t help but examine Nina. She closely resembled Luo’er and Luoya. A portrait of Nina, drawn based on Luo’er’s descriptions in the Haiya Academy library, indeed, bore great resemblance to her in person.
Nina smiled and her gaze shifted from Li Si to Luo’er and Luoya. Seeing Luo’er holding Luoya’s hand, a knowing smile spread across her face.
"Mom..." Luo’er coughed softly before respectfully addressing her.
"Mother..." Luoya mumbled, barely looking up at her.
"It seems that your relationship has finally improved. I’m delighted," Nina said, with a smile.
Only after seeing Nina’s smile did Luoya understand Luo’er, realizing that he was showcasing their close relationship in front of their mother to win her favor.
"Mom!" Tangmo shouted cheerfully, rushing towards Nina and wrapping his arms around her. Baiyue followed suit and hugged onto Nina’s other arm.
"You two should behave, we’re in public," Li Si insisted, with a frown.
"It’s okay, I quite like them greeting me like this," Nina said with a laugh.
"Luo’er, how come she refers to your mother as her mother too?" Shangguan Jiu whispered from behind Luo’er, urgently asking.
"Don’t misunderstand, she was adopted," Luo’er turned back and explained.
Incredibly, after hearing this, Shangguan Jiu became even more upset. She couldn’t help but pout her cheeks. Compared to Tangmo and Baiyue, who were close with Nina, she felt left out. It wasn’t just that she came later; her Night Elf lineage alone made it impossible to get close to Nina.
Nina saw Shangguan Jiu’s worry and asked, "What’s your name, Night Elf?"
"Me, me...," Shangguan Jiu stuttered, pointing at herself, "I’m Shangguan Jiu..."
"Are you a friend of Luo’er too?" Nina asked with a kind smile on her face.
"Yes, yes I am." Saying this, Shangguan Jiu uneasily glanced towards Luo’er.
"This Shangguan Jiu is quite the star of our academy." Li Si, seemingly lost in thought, took the initiative to speak in defense of Shangguan Jiu.
"Is that so? No need to be scared of me, I won’t alienate you," Nina said with a smile, extending her hand, "come on, you all must be hungry. I’ve prepared a feast for you."
"Oh, huh!" Shangguan Jiu extended her hand, nearly moved to tears.
Nina likely thought that Shangguan Jiu was one of Luo’er’s suitors, so she made the effort to get to know her. As a mother, she cared a lot about Luo’er’s future. Luckily, she did not see the gaggle of chatty young girls behind her, or she might find herself in the throes of a difficult decision.
"Why does our academy have so many ’stars’?" grumbled Hu Daoke.
"There aren’t that many," Cheng Ziang contributed.
"Look, there’s our leader and then there’s Shangguan Jiu. Are elves mixed with other races always the stars of the academy?" Hu Daoke sensed.
"Things may have changed now but in the past it was definitely so. Don’t you know that?" Cheng Ziang said, unable to resist looking at Hu Daoke.
"Know what?" Hu Daoke asked, his eyes wide.
"Back then, the academy only admitted two elf mixed-bloods. One was Luo’er and the other Shangguan Jiu. Hence, Luo’er was hailed as the academy’s crown—its gem—while Shangguan Jiu, being mixed with Night Elve blood, was referred to as the academy’s moon," Cheng Ziang explained.
"How pretentious," Hu Daoke muttered, simultaneously questioning how Cheng Ziang, usually so reticent, knew such gossip.
"Speaking of, are you going to look at that arm of yours or not?" Cheng Ziang asked, knocking his casted arm.
"Ah," Hu Daoke uttered a pained cry then gritted his teeth at Cheng Ziang, "Can’t you handle me with care? Don’t you know I’m injured?"
"Well, seems like it still hurts. Let’s go to the priest," Cheng Ziang suggested.
Nightingale also disembarked with the group to keep an eye on the young girls and ensure they didn’t cause any trouble. Another reason was that she wanted some fresh air. The container containing Fulajie’er was with her and Fulajie’er was currently chatting with her from her perch on Nightingale’s shoulder. Since they were in public, Fulajie’er remained invisible, so as to not frighten anyone.
After examining the container, Nightingale discovered that the whole of Fulajie’er’s soul was contained within a single crystal in the container—in other words, the majority of the container was unnecessary, only the crystal holding Fulajie’er mattered.
Next, she intends to extract the crystal, then find a better way to preserve it. Currently, Fulajie’er’s body was being frozen to transfer back to Haiya Academy in hopes of finding a way to revive her. Until they found a more suitable method, she had to protect Fulajie’er.
Meanwhile, at a training ground outside of Divine Wood Down, gunshots rang continuously. Murong and his crew were tirelessly training the elf soldiers on how to use modern weapons and apply modern warfare methods, all the while ignoring the arrival of the airboat.
Cheng Ziang led Hu Daoke to the pyramid. Luo’er also abandoned the feast to come keep Hu Daoke company. The priest still appeared calm and composed. As they observed him, they noticed something familiar about him. Upon further thought, they realized he had a similar air to Nightingale, embodying the spirit of a literati.
After finding out about the patient’s condition, the priest began to prepare for surgery. Yes, you read right—surgery. By now, Luo’er and the rest no longer doubted the priest’s medical expertise—rather, they were curious if the priest had studied at an Earth medical school.
The surgery was an interesting affair—the priest made a strange snake bite Hu Daoke’s arm, and within moments, half of his body was numb. According to the priest, this sort of snake releases anaesthetic venom and hence makes for an effective and relatively safe anaesthetic approach.
