Chapter 519: Chapter 512: The Nightingale’s Reaction
"What’s more, what I’m about to say might sound rather bizarre, but I still hope you all can believe me." As Luo’er finished speaking, his face instantly turned serious. His tone caught everyone’s attention, and they all stopped what they were doing to look at him unanimously.
"Sister Nightingale, I heard you come from the Ancient States, right?" Instead of explaining what they had experienced right away, Luo’er asked Nightingale.
"Yes, that’s right. What of it?" Nightingale was still scanning through some documents, her eyelids lowered. But when she heard Luo’er’s question, she looked up.
"Have you heard of the Cunning Speech Forest near Nailin Town?" Luo’er asked, furrowing his brow.
"Never heard of it. Probably just a place cooked up by wandering poets", Nightingale retorted, and went back to reading.
Luo’er could understand her lack of knowledge; the Cunning Speech Forest had only appeared a couple of decades ago. Nightingale, it seemed, had left the Ancient States for Yazhi City in the North even earlier than that.
"What about this Cunning Speech Forest?" Shangguan Jiu looked at him expectantly. It was a rare opportunity for her to speak with Luo’er, so she seized it eagerly.
Luo’er gulped before speaking solemnly, "During our internal intelligence gathering in Nailin Town, we heard of something. Approximately twenty kilometers out from Nailin Town, near the God Creation Base, there’s a place called the Cunning Speech Forest. Legend has it... there are ghosts there."
"Ghosts?" The attention of the group was piqued by his words. Being young ladies, they were fascinated by such a gossip-worthy tale.
"Since when did you start believing in all this?" Li Si teased.
"At first, I didn’t. But after spending a night in the Cunning Speech Forest, I became certain that these are not just empty words." Luo’er swallowed hard once more before again speaking with all seriousness.
"Are there really ghosts?" Shangguan Jiu blurted out.
"Yes, all four of us came across a ghost. A real one." Luo’er affirmed, and turned to look at Cheng Ziang and the others.
"Little Ke, what exactly happened?" Tangmo looked at Hu Daoke wide-eyed.
"Eh, for the specifics, you’d better ask the boss. I don’t know what to say." Hu Daoke scratched his head, visibly awkward.
"Luo’er, did you maybe misunderstand something in your sleep? You really believe in ghosts?" Li Si asked skeptically.
"I’m not confused, these ghosts were manufactured in the God Creation Base," Luo’er responded, his brows furrowed.
Upon hearing Luo’er, Nightingale trembled involuntarily. She put down the book she was holding and picked up another to scan through.
"Luo’er, you need to take responsibility for your words. Are you sure you didn’t hallucinate?" Li Si’s expression became stern.
"I’m responsible for what I said, and I didn’t hallucinate. I saw it plain and clear, even had a conversation with the ghost. They can all testify to this!" Luo’er said, rather agitated.
"Is that so?" Li Si asked, looking at each of them in turn.
"Yes, it was definitely a ghost. Even though we couldn’t see her, we could hear her voice. She conversed with us logically; it wasn’t an illusion." Cheng Ziang nodded, talking with conviction.
"I also heard her voice, but she didn’t hurt us. However, due to fear, I didn’t dare to speak to her much. Only the boss communicated with her." Hu Daoke scratched his head, appearing somewhat embarrassed.
"I fainted from fright..." Luoya mumbled, her head bowed.
Seeing their reactions, Li Si nodded. If they all saw it, then Luo’er mustn’t have been hallucinating. Despite the story sounding a little far-fetched, he did believe what Luo’er was saying.
"Explain what happened in detail, and Jiu’er, get ready to record it!" Li Si gave orders.
"Got it!" Shangguan Jiu grabbed the record sheet and pen, volunteering to be the secretary for their conversation.
"That ghost is not a traditional ghost, but rather a condensed form of magic. They can only operate in areas where magic is strong. Since it was dark, I couldn’t see very clearly, but I could distinctly sense that the surrounding magic was disturbed," Luo’er explained.
"Just to be clear, it seems only Luo’er can sense the disturbance of magic. Hu Daoke and I cannot feel it. According to the ghost, even mages may not be able to detect their presence through magic fluctuation," Cheng Ziang added from the side.
"Actually, I can also feel it..." Luo’er raised his hand shyly from the side, adding his two cents.
"Continue!" Li Si nodded and then fell into deep thought. According to them, it seems that only those of mixed elf blood can sense the spirits of these ghosts.
"As dawn approached, we saw the ghost. But it was a condensed magic cluster, just like how Moumou and Yue’er can bind with the magic cluster in Lipei. Although it is transparent, light passing through the magic cluster will distort, presenting a warped image. When they move, the magic cluster leaves a trace of distorted vision in the air," Luo’er continued.
"Isn’t that will-o’-the-wisp?" Tangmo couldn’t hold the question in anymore, as she was now starting to get a little scared.
"No, these magic clusters don’t glow at night, but they are able to make sound. The ghost that communicated with me, it was a girl’s voice," Luo’er said.
"A girl again!" Tangmo pouted and her face immediately became gloomy.
"Err..." Luo’er was, indeed, left speechless by Tangmo’s grumble.
"Stop interrupting and focus on what you’re supposed to do!" Li Si turned and admonished.
"According to them, they hadn’t died, but rather, they were sleeping. Every time they fell into a deep sleep, their consciousness would leave their bodies in the form of a magic cluster to roam outside. And because the area near the Cunning Speech Forest is abundant with magic, they like to wander around that region," Luo’er continued.
"Is it sleepwalking?" Shangguan Jiu couldn’t help but ask.
"No, it’s the consciousness leaving the body, wandering outside in the form of a magic cluster, and they can communicate with others, not just living in their own dreams," Luo’er said seriously.
"That’s amazing." Shangguan Jiu couldn’t help exclaiming.
"Anything else?" Li Si then asked.
"Well," Luo’er thought for a moment, then as if something came to him, he started to speak. "Oh yes, it seems that the ghost has its own name - Fulajie’er!"
As his words fell, there was a hushing noise from Sister Nightingale’s direction, just in time to see her standing abruptly from the chair, eyes wide open, scattering books all over the floor.
"What’s wrong with you?" Li Si sensed something was off with her, so he asked out of concern.
"What did you say her name was!" Ignoring Li Si’s concern, Nightingale dashed towards Luo’er and grabbed his arm anxiously to ask her question.
"Umm... Fulajie’er..." Faced with her heightened emotion, Luo’er took a step back in fear, then hesitantly said.
"Fulajie’er, it’s Fulajie’er..." Nightingale spoke as a look of shock spread across her face, her voice developing a sob.
"Do you know anything else about her?" Nightingale sniffled, continuing to grasp Luo’er’s arm while asking.
"Fulajie’er’s voice is that of a little girl, should be only around seven or eight years old, very immature, it seems like she hasn’t even hit puberty..." Luo’er said.
"I thought she was dead..." Nightingale slowly slouched on the ground, muttering to herself, her body wracked with sobs.
"Sister Nightingale, you... Do you know her?" Seeing Nightingale’s reaction, Luo’er couldn’t help but ask hesitantly.
"Where is she? Take me to her!" Nightingale, unconcerned with Luo’er’s worry, wiped away a tear, then got up from the ground, tightly gripped Luo’er’s shirt, and spoke with agitation.
