Chapter 510: Chapter 503: The Boss’s Memories
"Have you ever seen ghosts?" Luo’er asked them suspiciously.
"Let me tell you," another adventurer waved his hand, saying seriously, "I have a brother who went there, there really are ghosts, it’s truly terrifying. When he told us about it, he was trembling all over."
"So, where is this Cunning Speech Forest?" Luo’er couldn’t help but ask after hesitating.
Having grown up on Earth, Luo’er adheres to materialism and doesn’t really believe in these mysterious legends. Nonetheless, he still showed some respect to these people and did not ridicule their reports.
"The Cunning Speech Forest is located more than twenty kilometers north of Nailin Town. There is a mysterious base there that is guarded by Theron. You better not go there either, those Therons are far more terrifying than ghosts," another adventurer explained, waving his arms.
"More than twenty kilometers north... a god-making base?" Luo’er muttered, furrowing his brows.
"Why is that place guarded by Theron?" Luo’er asked, looking like a child filled with curiosity.
"Lower your voice," one of the adventurers made a silence gesture, then looked around before saying in a low voice, "It is said that they are carrying out some clandestine activities there, and Theron is guarding there. They will fire at any approaching targets, no matter whether you mean to go there or just pass by."
"Is the Cunning Speech Forest near that base?" Luo’er widened his eyes and also lowered his voice to ask.
"Exactly!" The three of them nodded in unison.
"Doesn’t Theron care?" Luo’er couldn’t help asking.
"Even Theron dares not intervene there. They only posted wooden signs outside the forest, hoping to stop rash adventurers from barging in. Even so, there are still some unlucky ones who get lost and go in there," one adventurer explained.
"I have a question, which came first, the Cunning Speech Forest or that mysterious base?" After pondering for a bit, Luo’er suddenly asked.
"We’re not sure," the three adventurers looked at each other, then shook their heads. One adventurer, however, seemed to know more. "The bar owner might know. He’s grown up here, but even he dares not talk about that place."
"Thanks!" Luo’er nodded, put the wine flask on the table, and got ready to walk to the bar.
"Brother, aren’t you drinking anymore?" the three of them asked in unison.
"No, you guys continue, thanks for the information," Luo’er waved his hand and said.
"Brother, heed my advice, don’t go there just for fun, it really is dangerous. My brother mentioned hearing a woman’s laughter in that forest."
"I heard there were also sounds of a child," another adventurer added.
"No, no, it should be a man snoring!" Their stories got more and more outrageous, they gradually forgot about Luo’er and started arguing amongst themselves.
Luo’er walked to the bar, and Luoya, who clearly heard their conversation, looked exceptionally pale. Seeing Luo’er approaching, she hesitantly asked, "You’re not planning to go there, are you?"
"Scared?" Luo’er asked her.
"Who-who’s scared!" Facing Luo’er, Luoya still showed her bravado.
"Don’t worry, I’ll protect you!" Luo’er said.
"Not going there is the best protection for me!" Luoya grumbled, furrowing her brows.
Luo’er ignored her and placed five gold coins on the bar before pushing them to the bartender.
"What can I get you?" The bartender asked joyously as he accepted the gold coins.
"No need," Luo’er waved his hand, then looked at him and said, "Boss, tell me about the Cunning Speech Forest!"
"You..." As soon as he heard the words Cunning Speech Forest, the tavern owner’s face changed on the spot, "How do you know about the Cunning Speech Forest?"
"Could you tell me why it’s called the Cunning Speech Forest?" Luo’er rubbed his nose and asked.
Looking at him, the owner took a long while before he sighed and then said, "The reason why it’s called the Cunning Speech Forest is because there are ghosts haunting within that forest. When you go in, you would hear ghosts whispering and laughing in your ears, hence the name Cunning Speech Forest."
"Are there really ghosts?" Looking at his serious expression, Luo’er couldn’t help but doubt the veracity of this matter.
"Of course," the boss said, unable to help swallowing, then said with lingering fear, "When I was young, I went there. I heard a little girl laughing behind me. I turned my head, but I couldn’t see anything. I thought it was a hallucination, so I kept walking. Just as I was about to reach a steep slope, the little girl’s voice appeared again, warning me not to slide."
Saying that, the boss took a deep breath, and when he exhaled, Luo’er could feel his breath trembling: "How could I not slip, I rolled down that steep slope, I didn’t even feel the pain, I just knew to run forward like crazy. And then, I ran out of the forest, not hearing that voice anymore, in the end, I was caught by Theron, then taken back to town. Since then, I’ve never dared to get close to that forest again."
"Are you sure it was someone talking to you, and even warned you not to fall?" Luo’er frowned and asked thoughtfully.
"It’s absolutely true!" the boss said confidently.
Seeing his firm expression, Luo’er knew he wasn’t lying. According to his description, this didn’t seem like a hallucination. It seemed as though there was a ghost following him, even reminding him not to trip.
"I’ve a question," after a moment of thought, Luo’er looked at the boss and asked, "Which came first, the Cunning Speech Forest or that mysterious base?"
Hearing his words, the boss’s face changed again, promptly looking around, then lowering his voice to say, "How do you know about that mysterious base, don’t mention it here, or you’ll bring trouble!"
Clearly, not only the adventurers, but even the tavern boss was deeply taboo about the God-making base under Theron’s watch. It seems that mentioning that place in public could lead to trouble with Theron.
"I would like to know which one came first." Luo’er couldn’t help but lower his voice, and then asked.
The boss was silent for a while, then leaned in to Luo’er, lowering his voice to say, "In the memory of the older generation, there was no such thing as the Cunning Speech Forest, it seemed to appear just a few decades ago."
"Can you be more specific?" Luo’er asked, frowning.
"Probably within the last twenty or thirty years!" the boss said after some thought.
"That mysterious base..." Luo’er asked.
"Also a matter of these twenty or thirty years." the boss said.
"So are you saying that the appearance of Cunning Speech Forest is related to that mysterious base?" Luo’er asked, frowning.
"Don’t speculate wildly, don’t guess!" The boss waved his hand, indicating him to stop.
"I understand!" Luo’er nodded, and the two subsequently retreated from each other.
It was not that Luo’er was nosy and wanted to explore the truth of these superstitions, but he felt that this intelligence might be useful. During the past intelligence gathering processes, Luo’er noticed that often some seemingly irrelevant messages turned out to be the key to the mission.
Last time in Holy Heart City, because he casually saved Truth, this girl directly stole the transit list of the Hound Gang for them, thereby breaking the stalemate between the Advance Team and the Hound Gang. Although Azita eventually laid bare all pretenses, there’s no denying that Truth played a huge role in that mission.
This story was quite tempting, but Luo’er felt even more that this intelligence could potentially play a huge role in the upcoming missions.
"Foreigner, take my advice, never think of going to the Cunning Speech Forest, and never approach that mysterious base, Theron kills without blinking an eye." In the end, the boss once again repeated his warning.
Compared to previous times, this intelligence gathering trip in the Ancient States was the most satisfying one for Luo’er. Almost no one would dislike him because of his half-elf traits. As long as he provided them with a pot of wine, they were willing to become buddies with him, saving Luo’er a lot of trouble.
